It has to be a spoof in order to create feedback for the next issue ?! (or not?) 2 Diary Dates Just back from another well organised HRCR tour (Bluebell 3 Root 2 Lunch Run), which although only a 122 mile day event, does involve 4-6 Pierre Reports two travelling days and 2 nights away. The TR3A currently sits in the garage choked with dust and awaiting a clean ready for 7-8 SHINE & SHOW another tour in the Shropshire borders and mid Wales this 9-11 Drive-it-Day reports following weekend. These are all “tulip” touring events where 12 TR3 XAL 79 remembered each entrant leaves the start at one minute intervals and it is 13-14 Muncer Mutters great to be amongst a variety of classic cars making up the field 15-16 Cars/Ramps @ Robsport of 60+ . Eventually we always catch up with a few cars (and the 17 Front Brake Enigma ! policy is to allow cars behind to pass if they wish to drive at a faster pace…...stressing these tours are NOT competitive) and 18 Cambridge Classic CR my favourite moment was following the Austin Healey 100/6 19-20 Ecurie Ecosse Collection around the lanes for about 30 miles. 21 TR East ….social meeting Lots inside this issue...and thank you to everyone who has sent a 22 Shine a Light contribution. Details to be advised IF you have any questions regarding the above ...contact Paul Richardson …. 2 3 Route to Lunch - Lea Valley Group Meeting – 20 May 2018 If anyone is interested – and why would you not be interested - we will be restarting our Route to Lunch activity for the May meeting. The RTL concept is that each month, we can meet up at or close to where one of the group lives and drive the route they would normally use to get to The Cock at Broom for the Sunday gathering. It could - doesn’t have to be - extended to involve diversions to places of interest nearby. Other than nominating a meeting point and time, the route planning can be as simple or complex as the ‘guide’ decides, ranging from a complex multi-page Tulip document through to ‘follow me and try to keep up!’. To get the ball rolling, I suggest we meetup in the car park opposite the Stevenage Football Club at around 11am. The car park can be found by travelling to Stevenage on the A1(M) to J7 and following the road towards Ware and Hertford. Turn left into the car park immediately after the second roundabout, where the football club is on the opposite side of the road. If approaching from the Hertford direction, enter Stevenage heading for the A1(M) . You will pass the football club on your left just before a roundabout. Use the roundabout to reverse your track and then immediately turn left into the car park. This time, the route directions will be simple: head for the A1(M), turn north for Hitchin; leave at the next exit for Hitchin. Drive through Hitchin heading for Bedford. In the middle of Henlow Camp, turn right towards Henlow village and continue over the A507 towards Langford. Just before leaving Henlow, turn left at a mini-roundabout towards Clifton and then Stanford. When you meet the B658, turn right – the right turn to Broom is about 1 mile along this road. (21 miles, 35 mins) Happy motoring and hope to see you at The Cock Inn Pierre 3 4 What a busy few weeks we have had! I know it is only a couple of months since the last TRunnion but so much to say. Before starting on our TR world, I must mention the trip Pat and I made to Scotland at the beginning of March, inadvertently timed to be immediately as the March snow falls were tailing off. Now, this isn’t a common time to go to NW Scotland, but we went up to meet with some very good German friends of ours who were going to Skye and the Cairngorms after visiting their son at Glasgow University. We had made arrangements to meet them on the Isle of Skye for a few days and decided to use the Alfa for this trip, as doing 1500 miles or so in the TR in just over 7 days seemed a bit too far in dodgy weather. As it was, we changed our planned route to go up the west side of the country to avoid the worst of the snow. As it turned out, we saw no snow until near Glasgow but did have the experience of driving through driving snow as we crossed the high ground on the way to Plockton in Skye. Now, this part of the west coast benefits from the Gulf Stream, which explains why palm trees were growing outside of our hotel at the harbour side.

About Kas Kastner and the Kastner Cup R.W. “Kas” Kastner was a well known producon car drive in the late 1950’s winning mulple class championships in his 1958 Tri- umph TR3A in both California Sports Car Club and SCCA compeon. Kas started the USA Triumph Compeon Department for the Triumph factory in the early 1960s. He authored the Triumph Preparaon manuals for the Triumph factory in the 1960-1972 era of producon car racing. Kas was the Motorsport was the Motorsports Naonal Manager for Nissan of North America from 1986 thru 1990. He then moved on to be Vice President, Operaons, of the new Nissan research and development facility Nissan Performance Technology Inc (NPTI) in Vista, California. At this facility Kas and his team of over 225 experts were responsible for the design, development, con- strucon and racing of the Nissan prototype cars predominate in the Internaonal Motorsports Associaon (IMSA) series of road racing events. During this period he lead the team of Nissan Pro- totype cars to four consecuve Drivers Championships for Geoff Brabham and three consecuve Manufacturers championships for Nissan.

The site was located within an area of archaeological potential and was nearby to the site of Greyfriars Friary and to the south, a possible medieval moated site. Archaeological features were found in three of the four trial trenches comprising several post holes, pits, linear features and structural remains. All features were dated by artefact or circumstantial evidence to the post-medieval or modern periods. The evidence from the trial trenching suggested that the site of the proposed housing development area contained little or no significant archaeological remains.     May/June 2020 the Oily Rag The Newsletter of the Vintage Sports Car Club of Calgary THIS TOO SHALL PASS! 1 Editor’s Comments Like the rest of you, I have been stuck in my house for the last several weeks broken only by the occasional visit out to the garage when the weather is warm enough that my tools don’t freeze to the touch. Fortunately the monotony of the days was broken by the birthday of my Jaguar which turned 49 years old on April 29! According to The Jaguar Heritage Trust, the car was dispatched to New York City on June 2, 1971. It still wears Signal Red paint, chrome wire wheels, and the seats are clad in Connolly black leather. The paint has been refreshed and the headrests re-stuffed but over all it wears its years better than its owner! Despite its six month sleep, it started on all 12 cylinders after 15 seconds of cranking which allowed the fuel to reach the carbs. Once warmed, it idled smoothly and insisted on a drive down the highway to stretch its legs. The view over the hood did not disappoint and I was pleased to find that the adjustment I had made to the kick-down switch worked perfectly and a prod on the gas peddle shot the RPM from 2200 to 3500 with a satisfying push and a muted snarl as it downshifted. As I drove down the residential street towards my home, I was rewarded by a teenage boy hollering “Cool car!” as I passed.
