However his reign had to come to an end and an early omen came in 2003 when the cue he had been using since the age of 14 and bought for £40 and used for all of his World Championship wins, snapped as he returned on the flight from the Thailand Open to Scotland. As the years progressed so Hendry knew in his heart of hearts that his game was starting to suffer and it wasn’t long before lower ranking players started to beat him. To draw a line in the sand and not to be accused of playing too long, Stephen announced his retirement from snooker in 2012.

Timothy David Harding Summary THIS thesis is a history of the development of chess as a pastime and cultural activity in the United Kingdom, principally between 1824 and 1914, concentrating on the ‘grass roots’ rather than professional chess. It examines the game’s growth from various perspectives and relates the findings to areas of academic debate in the history of sports and leisure. Historians up to now have paid little attention to indoor and mental games, although the need for such a study has been noted. Chess’s high cultural status led it to its downward diffusion in Victorian society. Sober and utterly divorced from gambling, unlike cards, chess was respectable and gradually developed into a sport, and later a ‘hobby’, during this period. The thesis uses qualitative evidence since there is little data on which to make a statistical analysis. The evidence is derived mostly from archival research into printed primary sources, but wherever possible it also draws on manuscript sources. These include correspondence relating to the Edinburgh match, records of some chess early clubs, the correspondence of Scottish champion G. B. Fraser, and the extensive papers of chess historian Harold Murray in the Bodleian Library.

He began his professional boxing career in 1981 and went on to become the World Boxing Boxing Association Featherweight Champion in 1985. J.’ Carey is an Irish retired hurler from Gowran, County Kilkenny. He played as a left wing-forward for the Kilkenny senior hurling team and is widely regarded as one of the greatest hurlers in the history of the game. Carey started his senior career in 1989 and went on to win five All-Ireland medals, ten Leinster medals and four National Hurling League medals with his team in the following decade and a half. A Historical Analysis of The BBC’s Post-War Broadcasting of Motorsport Richard Haynes (University of Stirling) and Timothy Robeers (University of Antwerp) Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television (Accepted for publication 8 April 2019) Print ISSN: 0143-9685 Online ISSN: 1465-3451 Abstract Although many media and cultural histories have looked at the emergence of particular popular sports, few have done so from a detailed perspective with respect to motorsport. Indeed, ever since its conceptualisation, motorsport has shared an intricate relationship with the media. However, despite advancements in camera and broadcasting equipment, significant technical and logistical difficulties to represent early motorsport as televisual, with a strong sense of ‘realism’, persevered. This article explores the emergence of motorsport on BBC television during the post-war period to determine if, and to what extent, early motorsport on television was (not) televised. To this end, a qualitative archival approach is used to examine a sample of archival and biographical media texts from the post-war period. Findings suggest the BBC experimented with the format of the hill climb, a motorsport series, by shaping it to fit the possibilities and requirements of television more appropriately. This resulted in the creation of the Television Trophy Trial, the adoption of scrambling and the rise of Rallycross. This means that the BBC was, in effect, not only using motorsport to its own benefit from the early 1950s onwards, but actively developing and representing motorsport as competitive and dramatic.
