HILL JENNIFER SHOAFF, COMMITTEE CHAIR UTZ MCKNIGHT RACHEL RAIMIST A THESIS In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Gender and Race Studies in the Graduate School of the University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2015 Copyright Kiara Monique Hill 2015 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This research interrogates the ways in which Black women process and negotiate their sexual identities. By connecting the historical exploitation of Black female bodies to the way Black female deviant identities are manufactured and consumed currently, I was able to show not only the evolution of Black women’s attitudes towards sexuality, but also the ways in which these attitudes manifest when policing deviancy amongst each other. Chapter 1 gives historical insight to the way that deviancy has been inextricably linked to the construction of Blackness. Using the Post-Reconstruction Era as my point of entry, I demonstrate the ways in which Black bodies were stigmatized as sexually deviant, and how the use of Black caricatures buttressed the consumption of this narrative by whites. I explain how countering this narrative became fundamental to the evolution of Black female sexual politics, and how ultimately bodily agency was later restored through sexual deviancy. Chapter 2 interrogates the way “authenticity” is propagated within the genre of reality TV. Black women are expected to perform deviant identities that coincide with controlling images so that the “authenticity” of Black womanhood is consumed by mainstream audiences. -

This musical comedy, focusing on a high school glee club, incorporates numerous stereotypes and real-world teenage struggles. This thesis focuses on the queer characteristics of four female personalities: Santana, Brittany, Coach Beiste, and Coach Sue. I investigate how their musical performances are producing a constructive form of mass media by challenging hegemonic femininity through camp and by producing relatable queer female role models. In addition, I take an ethnographic approach by examining online fan blogs from the host site Tumblr. Jackson II, Ph.D. and Omotayo Banjo Adesagba Ph.D. Abstract This study explores viewers’ perceptions after heavy exposure to VH1’s reality show franchise Love and Hip-Hop. Specifically the investigation seeks to understand how heavy viewership influences 1Black female college students’ view of male/female romantic relationships in their everyday lives as well as their understanding of the Black female image portrayed on the show. The researcher conducted 6 one on one interviews and coded each for emergent themes using the constant comparison technique. Cultivation Theory and Black Feminist Theory guided this study and the researcher’s analysis of the six participants’ responses. This study serves as an analysis of how media messages influence a specific target audience’s image of themselves and their relationship goals. 1 For the purposes of this study the term "African American" is used to identify those Americans, who are descendants of Africa. Identity creation will be analyzed using Richard Gregg’s concept of ego-function. By applying the three stages of the theory – victimization of the ego, demonization of the enemy, and reaffirmation of the ego – to both albums, I hope to uncover the ways that both West and Hill contribute to identity creation. Washington, D.C. 20500 RE: Commutation Petition of Chauncey Hawkins Dear Mr. President: On behalf of Amir Muhadith (previously known as Chauncey Hawkins and Loon) and his family, we strongly urge you to grant him a presidential commutation of sentence without delay. The undersigned—musicians, actors, filmmakers, and community leaders strongly believe that justice necessitates the exercise of executive clemency in this case. In 2013, Mr. Hawkins was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment for a minor role in a non-violent drug case.1 His sentence was subsequently lowered to 136 months (11 years, 4 months) as a result of the All Drugs Minus 2 Amendment by the U.S. Sentencing Commission in 2014. He has served over 7 years of his sentence. We believe this should be enough. Chauncey Hawkins was born in Harlem, New York, and as a young adult he started his career in the music industry as a member of Mase’s rap group Harlem World and then became part of P. Diddy’s Bad Boy Records under the name Loon. He released his self- titled debut album Loon and made many guest appearances on songs of the R&B and hip hop genres.2 But he is most known for his appearance on P.
