On behalf of the Secretary-General, I would like to thank you for your letter of 19 July 2006, inviting him to take part in the celebration of the 75th birthday of Archbishop Desmond M. Tutu, which is being held by Artists for a New South Africa on 18 September 2006 in Los Angeles.

The Secretary-General is grateful for your invitation to this event, which he understands will also be a fundraiser for disadvantaged children, including children in South Africa who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS, as well as at-risk children in the United States of America. The efforts of your organization on behalf of these children serve a noble cause, in which the United Nations is also engaged. However, I regret to inform you that the Secretary-General will be unable to attend on this occasion due to the pressure of his schedule during the opening days of the sixty-first session of the General Assembly.

Once again, we thank all of the members of the Board of Directors of Artists for a New South Africa for this kind invitation. On behalf of the Secretary-General, let me take this opportunity to wish Archbishop Tutu a very happy birthday and to wish you a successful fundraiser.
