  • Hofstede's Masculinity
Keio Communication Review No. 27, 2005 Hofstede’s Masculinity/ Femininity Dimension and the Pregnancy of Princess Masako: An Analysis of Japanese and International Newspaper Coverage by Tomoko KANAYAMA Anne COOPER-CHEN* Introduction In the world’s most masculine society (Hofstede, 2001), a baby girl is shaking Japan’s very foundations. On December 5, 2001, Princess Masako gave birth to her first child–a daughter, Aiko. All Japanese celebrated the happy news that, after eight years of marriage, the future emperor and empress of Japan at last had a child. The media unanimously reported it as a nation’s brightest news event of the year. Masako’s pregnancy garnered attention not only from the Japanese media, but also from foreign media, partly because of issues surrounding the succession of the world’s oldest monarchy system, which is rooted in Shinto religion. Moreover, Japan needed some good news–a bright spot in the social malaise caused by a long economic recession. In addition to these reasons, Masako herself attracts media as perhaps the most popular female public figure or celebrity in Japan. Ever since Masako, who was a commoner but a brilliant, successful former diplomat, became a member of the world’s most traditional monarchy, Japanese people have expected her to open up the royal family and promote gender equality in Japanese society. News Coverage of the Imperial Family in Japan All matters related to the imperial family are taken charge of by the Imperial Household Agency. In Japan, each governmental administration has its own press club, called a “kisha club,” in which only members of each club can get official information and resources relevant to matters of the administration.

During the first three decades of the twentieth century, Japanese society underwent significant changes in a short amount of time. After the intense modernizations of the late nineteenth century, the start of the twentieth century witnessed an increase in overseas militarism, turbulent domestic politics, an evolving middle class, and the expansion of roles for women to play outside the home. As such, the early decades of the twentieth century in Japan were a crucial period for the formation of modern ideas about femininity and womanhood. Before, during, and after the rule of her husband Emperor Taishō (1879-1926; r. 1912-1926), Empress Teimei held a highly public role, and was frequently seen in a variety of visual media.

Professor Ben-Ami Shillony discussed the future succession to the Japanese throne in the light of the current debate about female succession, outlined in his recent book Enigma of the Emperors (Folkestone: Global Oriental, 2005). Dr Best analysed the changing Anglo-Japanese court relationship which had originally been underpinned by the Anglo-Japanese alliance but had become a secondary factor by the 1930s. November 2006 Abstracts Shillony: Paper examines how Japan’s imperial dynasty dependent on the male line of succession has lasted so long and analyses how it will overcome its present difficulties. An Advisory Panel was created to recommend future policy to the Koizumi cabinet but its report in 2005 was criticized. The impasse over the Panel’s report was broken by the birth of a son in September 2006 to Princess Kiko, wife of Prince Akishino. Best: Paper explains why the royal relationship with Japan became so important to Britain. During the Anglo-Japanese Alliance (1902-23), relations between the two Courts were cordial.

In doing so, I seek to challenge currently held, inaccurate views of the role played by this tradition in the history of Japanese esoteric Buddhism and Japanese religion more generally. The Tachikawa-ryū, which has yet to receive sustained attention in English-language scholarship, began in the twelfth century and later came to be denounced as heretical by mainstream Buddhist institutions. The project will be divided into four sections: three of these will each focus on a different chronological stage in the development of the Tachikawa-ryū, while the introduction will address the portrayal of this tradition in twentieth-century scholarship. • The Formation of the Nihonshoki and Multiple Sources
PROVISIONAL TRANSLATION (December 2018) Only significant errors of English in the translation have been corrected––the content will be checked against the original Japanese for accuracy at a later date. The Formation of the Nihonshoki and Multiple Sources ENDŌ Keita ecause it begins with the creation of heaven and earth, the Nihonshoki has both characteristics of a historical chronicle and a creation tale––one that tells about the origin of Japan B centering on the emperor. This is why there has been much debate about how reliable the content in it is. Comparing it with the other works of history compiled by imperial order, the Rikkokushi (The Six National Histories of Japan), the Nihonshoki is distinct in terms of the establishment of the age of kami, the counting using a sexagenary cycle based on taisai (an imaginary star directly opposite Jupiter), and the inclusion of many ballads and songs, which highlight how different it is from later history books beginning with the Shoku Nihongi (Chronicles of Japan Continued). The inclusion of many bunchū is also another distinct feature. Bunchū used to be regarded as “loose notes,” and there was a view that such notes did not exist at the time of completion of the Nihonshoki.1 However, Sakamoto Tarō concludes that based on the fact that the styles of the main text and of bunchū are identical, the bunchū were not added in a later period but existed from the time of completion. Today the mainstream understanding is that the bunchū versions are the main notes which existed from the time of the text’s completion in the 4th year of Yōrō (720).2 Yet it can be said that the contents of bunchū are “loose” and have a wide range of Japanese readings for phrases (kunchū), citations with the titles of references, and presentations of different versions, which cannot be classified as one.

Prior to Western influence, pre- modern Japanese society viewed imperial portraits as religious objects for private, commemorative use; only imperial family members and close supporters viewed these portraits. The Confucian notion of filial piety and the Buddhist tradition of tsuizen influenced the production of these commemorative or mortuary portraits. By the Meiji period, however, Western portrait practice had affected how Japan perceived its imperial portraiture. Because the Meiji government socially and politically constructed the ideal role of Emperor Meiji and used the portrait as a means of propaganda to elevate the emperor to the status of a divinity, it instituted controlled public viewing of the images of Japanese emperors.

Ruoff, Chair James Grehan Jennifer Tappan Hillary Jenks Portland State University ©2011 i The imperial visits to the United States by Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia in 1954 and Emperor Hirohito of Japan in 1975, while billed as unofficial by all parties involved, demonstrated the problematic nature of America’s unstable Cold War political agendas, connected African and Asian Americans with alternative sources of race, nationality, and ethnic pride, and created spaces for the emperors to reinforce domestic policies while advancing their nations on the world stage. Just as America’s civil and governmental forces came together during the imperial tours, in 1954 and 1975 respectively, to strongly promote Cold War ideological narratives to a global audience, African American and Japanese American racial and ethnic groups within the United States created their own interpretations of the tours.

CARMEN BLACKER Carmen Elizabeth Blacker 1924–2009 I CARMEN BLACKER was a distinctive figure in Japanese Studies in the second half of the twentieth century and a leading scholar of Japanese religion and folklore.1 She will be remembered chiefly for her magnum opus on Japanese shamanism, The Catalpa Bow.2 She also published a considerable body of work in the form of papers, lectures, contributions to edited vol- umes and reviews. This supporting work frequently reveals her methods and assumptions more clearly than the longer book. Nor was her research confined to religion; she also produced notable early work in intellectual history, and more broadly in a series of biographical accounts of men and women connected to Japan. She was a member of what she herself recognised proudly as ‘our notable generation’,3 that included a cohort of scholars of Japan who encountered the language during the war such as, in this country, William Beasley, Geoffrey Bownas, Eric Ceadel, Ronald Dore, Charles Dunn, Douglas Mills, Ian Nish and Patrick O’Neill. The group included also scholars who later turned to the study of China, such 1 A detailed account of her life is given by Peter Kornicki in his ‘Carmen Blacker (1924–2009) and the study of Japanese religion’, in Hugh Cortazzi (ed.) Britain and Japan: Biographical Portraits, vol. 7 (Folkstone, 2010), pp. 216–29. 2 The Catalpa Bow: a Study of Shamanistic Practices in Japan (London, 1975 and subsequent editions; Japanese translation, 1979).
