Thus, it will be possible to claim the future and protect the rights of future generations by assuring the continuity of economic growth and social development. Since, sustainable development approach could not be integrated adequately into the economic policies in last 25 years; the desired level of welfare could not be reached at the global level. The gap between the rich and the poor has been widening and a considerable amount of the population has been living in absolute poverty. While the countries have been developing in economic terms, inequality in income distribution could not be resolved, and environment was harmed by unconscious consumption of natural resources. Nevertheless, demand for a higher level of welfare and sustainable world has been increasing every day. The projections showing that we will need 50 percent more food, 45 percent more energy and 30 percent more water in the year 2030, by being aware of that world resources has limits, , adoption of more sustainable approaches are necessary. Therefore, we should urgently act in collaboration for resilient nations and a livable planet by withdrawing behavior patterns threatening wild life and polluting and depleting natural resources. We should make use of any opportunity while the future of our world is in threat. We will achieve considerable progress towards sustainable development, when we transform environment-friendly behaviors and preferences into life styles for both individuals and societies. World leaders met at United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) on 20-22 June 2012 to define the way towards a sustainable future on poverty eradication, social security and equality, and protection of natural resources with such an approach. Turkey, as a country considering future generations, providing equal opportunities and equity, acting with human-centered and inclusive development approach and preparing development policies, was strongly prepared for Rio+20 Conference by coordination of Ministry of Development and participation of all the relevant parties. Turkey participated at the Summit with a with a large delegation led by our Prime Minister and once again put forward its commitment for contributing at most to the solution of deepening global problems in line with country realities. Putting forth the experience and the success of Turkey on sustainable development with model practices and presenting them at international platforms will contribute significantly to extending these practices both in our country and in the world. In the context of preparations to Rio+20 Conference, the projects and programs implemented on sustainable development in Turkey, were evaluated with this point of view. Best practice applications were collected upon a call for applications. A total of 181 applications were made by public sector, non-governmental organizations, private sector and universities, each one of which was a successful practice. These applications, in the first phase, were evaluated by a group of 15 • • • • • • • • • ii independent assessors in line with the criteria explained in the application manual, then reviewed by a technical board consisting of competent academicians and experts on sustainable development and finally 24 Best Country Practices Examples have been identified. Selected practices were shared with the global community with Turkey’s Sustainable Development Report at the Rio+20 Summit. 10 of the best practices were implemented by private sector, 6 by public, 5 by NGOs and 3 by the universities. Best practice examples of our country shared in this context, indicates that we have achieved a inclusive combination towards an environment sensitive development. These practices are the indicators of the experience and success in this field and constitute guiding examples for other countries to achieve sustainable development. In this context, I extend my sincere thanks to the application owners which shared their valuable works, all contributors to these practices, and all academicians and experts who devoted their time for their support throughout the evaluation process. I would also like to emphasize the contribution of United Nations Development Programme during the Rio+20 preparations and Business Council for Sustainable Development Turkey during identification of best practices and appreciate their collaboration.
