She spent three months listening Michael Pattison, Alchemy Film & Arts introduces… towards the creation of an audio-visual work which would capture and preserve the threatened sights and sounds of human culture and ecology for an uncertain future. Sylvan Ghosts / Viridian Echoes Her film Sylvan Ghosts / Viridian Echoes is the culmination of a study into a small town and its satellite woodlands, its hopes, dreams, past and future. Q&A 8pm Interval For this premiere screening, Ela will perform live with local musicians with whom she worked while resident in Huntly – Aaron Clark (accordion), a cappella vocal 8:30pm Dudendance introduces… group Tripple, and Miguel M Padilla (flute) – adding their live responses to the film and its soundtrack. Detour (on route to a movie) Q&A The Lady Vanishes 9:30pm The audience are invited to meet the artists and enjoy Dudendance Theatre, 2019, duration 7 minutes. the bar 11pm Bar closes This short film was created for Dudendance’s outdoor work at the Haining in the Scottish Borders in 2016. Footage was originally shot in Huntly pool during a summerschool in 2006 and edited to Fiona Soe Paing’s live soundtrack which also features Huntly trio Tripple. Detour on Route to a Movie Dudendance Theatre, 2019, duration 30 minutes. Shot on location in Argentina, Detour stems from a project originally shot in 2002. Loosely based on Jean Genet’s The Maids, the very minimal action follows a day in the life of a manservant. The relationship of the servant and his mistress unfolds through the layering of the protagonists’ voices. The footage is framed in small, claustrophobic spaces giving the characters a theatrical presence. Live and recorded sound will be interwoven during the film’s premiere screening; sound score and live musical collaboration by Fabiana Galante. Artists Ela Orleans Miguel M Padilla Ela Orleans is an audio-visual composer, multi-instrumentalist and singer. Originally from Santa Fe, New Mexico of mixed Hispanic/Native American She uses electronic and acoustic instruments to create a diverse and heritage, Miguel settled in Aberdeenshire where his interest in music layered music which she describes as “movies for ears”. Aaron’s grandfather, Ted Clark was a fantastic melodeon player. His death in 2017 sparked the start of Aaron’s intuitive journey with instruments of the accordion family. Aaron entered his first competition in 2018 and has won many trophies since. Aaron has Autism, ADHD and Tourette’s - he calls them his ability not his disability. He cannot read music but has a talent for composing original tunes which his brother puts into notation for him. Aaron plays in the Sir-Reel Clarks band with his brother and father – together they present a diverse genre-crossing mix of traditional Scottish and Irish folk and jazz. Artists With thanks to... Fiona has recently completed a residency with Aberdeen Performing Arts, creating new music inspired by the landscape, ballads and stories of North East Scotland. Fabiana Galante Fabiana Galante, pianist and sound artist from Buenos Aires, has been working in the contemporary music scene in Argentina since the 1990s. Her main interest lies in musical interpretation and creation away from the ‘concert’ environment. This has led her to work with musicians, filmmakers, improvisers and performers on experimental collaborative projects throughout South America, Europe and the UK, and USA. She began her collaboration with Dudendance Theatre in 2000, combining wild track sampling and composing music for their films, site-specific performances and live work. Currently, Fabiana teaches at Universidad de Montevideo, Uruguay, and is working on several projects with multidisciplinary artists..

As I settle into my forties and watch my two little girls grow up, I wonder how to tell them what it meant to me to grow up in the Catskills. When I had the chance to read Phil Brown’s book, Catskill Culture, I admired his ability to come to terms with this period in his life. I thought that perhaps it was time to take a stab at it myself. And to try to understand how the Catskills vanished so quickly and so completely that an archive had to be established to ensure that some traces survive. In our family there was often talk about writing a book about the hotel. But how to capture the zaniness, the colorful characters, the exhausting routine and the special camaraderie that made up the Delmar Hotel? We would try organizing it around a day-in-the-life. My mom rose at six to begin to prepare for breakfast, first for the staff, then for the guests. My dad bantered with a guest who was up at dawn waiting to complain about something askew. The day ended at 11 PM as the nightly performance in the casino drew to a close and the last trays in the tea room, where guests would repair after the show, were put away.

But there is one rock star who aligns himself with MacDonald, finding inspiration for his music in the Victorian writer. So maybe MacDonald is a rock star after all! Mike Scott, the leader of the Scottish band The Waterboys, has been channeling MacDonald’s spirit into his music for years.     Science of Place A brief methodology: Consulting the community of Huntly Keeping to the objective of searching for a valid brand identity for Huntly, I would like to follow a methodology that remains true to my normal mode of work and try to steer away from the clichés often found in the marketing industry. I have drawn up some flexible guidelines: An open-minded approach. Going to a strange place gives one the advantage of experiencing it with fresh eyes. To strengthen this element, I am going to consciously ignore any preconceived expectations of Huntly. I suggest spending at least the first week merely observing town life and settling in without forcing any agendas. Close consultation with the project partners. Only after allowing the first week of “clean” observation, to sit down and get a clear vision of what it is that the ATP and Deveron Arts want to achieve with this project. Is the idea to position Huntly as a fashionable getaway destination, a rural family town, a business hub, a cosmopolitan community, a “green” town or a boomtown, or a combination of all the above (or none of the above?). What would be viable and realistic and what are possible concerns or expected pitfalls. Embracing ordinary, day-to-day life. To get an insight in the dynamics of the Huntly “family scene” and the various age groups thereof by engaging the community with my wife and children. Asking questions without questionnaires. What a stupid question. It's also a very common one. It implies two very dangerous presumptions: one, that people are generally unhappy with who they are (dangerous because it might be true), and two, that there are people out there who we might actually look up to (dangerous because it might not be true). Let's focus on the latter idea: it basically says that there are no role models for us. A depressing concept, but not nearly as depressing as the idea that people don't like themselves. Oddly enough, the two may be connected: if you have a role model to emulate, you see the positive characteristics of the model in yourself.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS Lúnasa Lúnasa is made up of Kevin Crawford (flutes, low whistles and tin whistles), Trevor Hutchinson (double bass), Ed Boyd (guitar), Seán Smyth (fiddle and low whistle) and Cillian Vallely (uilleann pipes and low whistles). The band has sold more than quarter of a million albums with tens of thousands of individual track downloads over an impressive back catalogue of seven highly acclaimed and award-winning albums. Lúnasa is internationally acknowledged as being the finest traditional Irish instrumental band of recent times, renowned for stunning shows honed by superb musicianship and a constant touring cycle.
