Warburton, John Henry. (2010). Picture Radio
! ∀# ∃ !∃%& ∋ ! (()(∗( Picture Radio: Will pictures, with the change to digital, transform radio? John Henry Warburton Master of Philosophy Southampton Solent University Faculty of Media, Arts and Society July 2010 Tutor Mike Richards 3 of 3 Picture Radio: Will pictures, with the change to digital, transform radio? By John Henry Warburton Abstract This work looking at radio over the last 80 years and digital radio today will consider picture radio, one way that the recently introduced DAB1 terrestrial digital radio could be used. Chapter one considers the radio history including early picture radio and television, plus shows how radio has come from the crystal set, with one pair of headphones, to the mains powered wireless with built in speakers. These radios became the main family entertainment in the home until television takes over that role in the mid 1950s. Then radio changed to a portable medium with the coming of transistor radios, to become the personal entertainment medium it is today. Chapter two and three considers the new terrestrial digital mediums of DAB and DRM2 plus how it works, what it is capable of plus a look at some of the other digital radio platforms. Chapter four examines how sound is perceived by the listener and that radio broadcasters will need to understand the relationship between sound and vision. We receive sound and then make pictures in the mind but to make sense of sound we need codes to know what it is and make sense of it. Chapter five will critically examine the issues of commercial success in radio and where pictures could help improve the radio experience as there are some things that radio is restricted to as a sound only medium. -

Exploring Structural Sections in EDM DJ-Created Radio Mixes with the Help of Automatic Music Descriptors
Exploring structural sections in EDM DJ-created radio mixes with the help of automatic music descriptors Vincent Zurita Turk Supervised by Perfecto Herrera and Giuseppe Bandiera Sound & Music Computing Music Technology Group - Universitat Pompeu Fabra Abstract Disc Jockeys are the most likely the ultimate experts at mixing music to “move the crowd”. In this work, structural sections based on “levels of emotional experience” in electronic dance music (EDM) are investigated by analyzing DJ-created radio mixes using automatic music descriptors in order to get audio content information. Mixes are first manually annotated to categorise structural sections and then, their characteristics and patterns between them are investigated. Finally, various evaluations are performed to explore the accuracy with which a system could automatically detect, with the given information, the different sections within randomly chosen independent ten seconds excerpts. Results prove the reliability of the chosen descriptors to achieve a successful classification with moderate number of errors. Moreover, a solution for improving the prediction’s accuracy by taking in account patterns between structural sections is proposed. Table of contents 1. BBC Trust Put These out to Public Consultation
BBC Strategy Review Supporting analysis December 2010 Getting the best out of the BBC for licence fee payers BBC Strategy Review / Supporting analysis Introduction In summer 2009, the BBC began a wide-ranging review of all aspects of its future strategy. In March 2010, the BBC Executive then published the strategy proposals that it put forward to the Trust, titled Putting Quality First. The BBC Trust put these out to public consultation. A summary can be found at Annex A. In July, the Trust published its initial conclusions in response. These focused in particular on two areas. First, the shape of the BBC’s broadcast and online services and the content within them. Second, the way in which the BBC controls its costs and how much it tells people about where the money is spent. In both areas, the Trust concluded that there was more to be done to set even higher standards. We set the Executive a number of challenges, and committed the Trust to further work on areas including in particular: • Value for money • Performance objectives and reporting • Distribution • Boundaries with the commercial market We have now completed that work and published the final strategy for the BBC, available online at http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/our_work/strategy_review/index.shtml. The strategy itself has been designed to be as concise as possible since it will, to some degree, be a working document for BBC management. This document therefore sets out the supporting analysis in longer form. A new licence fee settlement The Trust recognises that the BBC’s new licence fee settlement changes the picture somewhat. -

Berry, Richard (2013) Radio with Pictures: Radio Visualization in BBC National Radio
Berry, Richard (2013) Radio with pictures: Radio visualization in BBC national radio. The Radio Journal, 11 (2). pp. 169-184. ISSN 1476-4504 Downloaded from: http://sure.sunderland.ac.uk/id/eprint/5210/ Usage guidelines Please refer to the usage guidelines at http://sure.sunderland.ac.uk/policies.html or alternatively contact [email protected]. Radio with Pictures: Radio Visualisation in BBC National Radio Richard Berry University of Sunderland Abstract. Radio has always had pictures. The ones the listener created in their own minds and this is, most of us agree, one of the medium's greatest strengths. However, radio is increasingly consumed on a digital platform (such as DAB Radio, Digital TV, a mobile device or a computer) on devices with screens, rather than a dial. This creates a problem for radio because when we look at the device we are listening to we see a screen that often lacks rich content. The process of Radio Visualisation is about filling this space. This papers focus, though, is the other ways in which radio is visualising itself online in a process that deploys transmedia storytelling techniques that build relationships with the audience, builds brands and helps broadcasters to tell stories in ways never before possible. In the spring of 2011 2.84 million British TV viewers watched a radio programme on their Televisions. They were tuning in via interactive television (or the 'red button') services to watch the BBC Radio One breakfast presenter Chris Moyles attempt to break a world record for the longest radio programme. The BBC installed a series of fixed cameras in the programme’s regular studio at the BBC's Yalding House studios, with added 'roving' cameras to allow the presenters to broadcast from other parts of the building and a cafe across the street. -
La Fleur Biography One of the Industry's Most Exciting Breakout
La Fleur Biography One of the industry’s most exciting breakout talents, La Fleur is blazing a trail impossible to ignore. From her highly lauded collaboration with Sasha ‘Förbindelse’ that scored an Essential New Tune, to her stunning debut on Kompakt’s Speicher series ‘Tears’ and the relaunch of her Power Plant label with the exquisite ‘Aphelion’ EP, her elegant take on house and techno continues to captivate. Creative freedom and a deep connection to her environment have fuelled the artistic endeavours of Sanna La Fleur Engdahl stretching back to childhood. Born in the Swedish city of Örebro, weekends were spent playing and exploring the forests surrounding her home, alongside lessons in piano, flute, ballet and later singing. In the years following, she graduated with a Master in Pharmaceutical Science but eschewed a career in pharmacy to focus on music full-time. Later Power Plant was launched with the incandescent classic ‘Flowerhead’ with the project becoming a multi-disciplinary breeding ground for different creative pursuits, with music always at the core. She begun the Power Plant ‘Elements’ fashion line, collaborating with designer Stacey DeVoe to create an eight- piece capsule collection focusing on androgynous design and geometric cuts. While her passion for the visual arts has seen her source talented painters and illustrators for the label’s cover slicks, including Olaf Hajek, Dan Hillier, David Karcenti and the iconic Swedish artist Hans Arnold, a process she revels in. The late Arnold famously illustrated ABBA’s Greatest Hits album, and the Swedish fairytale series Bland tomtar och troll, so it was with considerable pride that La Fleur got the opportunity to curate and exhibit his work at a gallery in Stockholm, introducing his art to a new generation of Swedes.
