Sauk County’s 50+ Club JUNE 2021 Newsletter NOTES FROM BASCO BOARD PRESIDENT

BASCO! What is it? Why did I join? That’s easy—I came to three events and thought how relaxing-and joined! I’ve made new friends and enjoy the various activities BASCO has to offer. For the activities we offer, there isa $1 participation fee that has taken in enough to meet the rent!

In 2014, I was asked to run for office and really have tried to do my best. The first year was on Ways and Means as Chair, and then Trips Chair which was too much. Second year I was Trips Chair, as I am today. It’s a lot of work, having to cancel 4 trips in 2020. We have 3 trips booked for 2021 and they are filling up fast.

We have monthly board meetings to update activities and to keep financial business intact. I monitor all the activities and when something is voted on, I check to see the changes are administered.

In six months, it will be election time again. Please consider running as a BASCO board member. If you would like more details, please call the BASCO office (608) 356-8464 or give me a call (608) 448-7972.

CELEBRATE FLAG DAY JUNE 14!

Flag Day, a day of honoring the national flag, is observed this year on Monday, June 14. On May 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing national Flag Day on June 14. The day commemorates the date in 1777 with the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States.

This activity is listed for 10:00 every Monday morning (in Room 24) in the BASCO Center Activities Calendar. Perhaps it is overlooked by many, or maybe they just don’t understand the term. It’s a form of dominoes in which the player has his own “train” but there is also a Mexican Train upon which everyone can play. A beginning player can easily learn the few basic rules and can be on their way to enjoying a fun-filled game. Much laughter can be heard in the Senior Center on Monday mornings from 10-12 as the group progresses with the game. It’s not necessary to stay the whole two hours. Anyone may come and go as they wish. We would love to have you join us! DOES PLAYING CARDS MAKE YOU HAPPY?

We start on Mondays 1-3 with Double Deck Euchre, but we’re still seeking additional players. On Wednesdays, 500 is played from 1-3. Then from 5:30-9:30, we play Sheepshead. On Thursdays, we play Sheepshead at 1 pm and Fridays we play Euchre at 1 pm. Bridge is played every Tuesday from 12:30-3.

We encourage people to wear a mask, although on Wednesday evenings, we don’t wear them. If you are an individual that prefers to wear a mask, you are welcome to join us if you wish. There are many other activities that are beginning to start up again so contact BASCO at (608) 356-8464 or watch your newsletter calendar! WELCOME, ALL WOOD CARVERS! Woodcarving is held every Wednesday from 1-3 in Room 21. We have had as many as 12 carvers attending. Now that we’ve resumed our sessions, we’re hoping to build up attendance.

The carvers range from novice/beginners to carvers with decades of experience. We welcome newcomers and are more than happy to share helpful hints on various carving techniques and what are considered to be the best carving tools, and methods of putting the final touches on a project.

We enjoy the camaraderie of the group, and spend a delightful couple of hours discussing everything from funny family stories, favorite books, movies, television programs, vacations, other hobbies and interests, favor- ite foods and places to eat, and what we are planning for our next projects, as we work away on our carvings. The time seems to fly by. We like to bring in our finished projects to show the group and are always excited to see each other’s pieces.

Join us, even if you have never wood carved before. I was a complete beginner a year ago when I attended my first session. I have been hooked on wood carving ever since.

BOOK REVIEW OF RUNNING WITH SHERMAN BY CHRISTOPHER MCDOUGAL

If you’ve ever owned a donkey, you’ll probably enjoy this book as you nod in agreement with the author’s attempt to understand and train Sherman. If you haven’t owned a donkey, this book will give you an insight into a fascinating and complex creature. Running With Sherman is a true story of a mistreated donkey kept by a hoarder. When the author manages to talk the owner in- to letting him take Sherman, he soon realizes that the poor, sad animal is in such bad shape that he might not even survive. He does his best to give Sherman care and slowly the donkey recov- ers physically but seems mentally depressed. The author is told by a friend, Tanya, who has raised donkeys, that Sherman needs a purpose. Thus begins the author’s journey to train him- self and Sherman to run in donkey races. Who knew such a thing existed? Along the way, you meet many other characters who help the author learn how to understand the psyche of a don- key and what it takes to convince one to run with a human. Most of the Book Club members thought that there were way too many characters and the author could have cut out half of them. Overall, however, the book was delightful and recommended to those who like animal stories of redemption. Reviewed by Pat Wester

Our first brat stand on April 3rd was very successful. We took in over $2,000, including our Raffle. We had over 120 cars come through the drive-thru at Pierce’s East.

Another brat stand is scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, May 29th from 9-2 and again on June 18th at Pierce’s Express. If anyone is interested in getting involved with any of our social events, please contact Nora Schmidt (608) 448-7972 or myself (608) 393-7314.

The virus has kept everyone in the house too long and now it’s time to get on with your lives, get back to what people enjoy doing with their families and friends (just my opinion). The Gun and Meat Raffle, which is a first for BASCO, will be very successful. People are eager to spend money on things like that. The American Legion, of which I am also in charge of events, sold the same type of raffle at a brat stand in Reedsburg. We sold $1,125 in tickets in one day! All you have to do is ASK – people are very generous.

Another first for BASCO was the Pancake Breakfast at Thunderbird Lanes on Sunday, May 16th. If successful, we might make it an annual event! At the time of this writing, BASCO may be participating in an event at Oschner Park on June 27th with Helping Hands Crafts Shows.

A year ago, the BASCO Board of Directors decided to purchase a concession trailer to make it easier and more convenient for the members who were helping with our events. Since that time, we have installed electricity, plumbing, cabinets, and counter tops. Stop by at any of our events and see our investment! It will also be used at the Sauk County Fair and Baraboo Steam and Gas Show where we will be selling our Raffle Tickets. The trailer will be stored at a local business in Baraboo.

Another major event will be Ski Hi Apple Orchard, serving food three different weekends, starting September 3.

The Mollie B Show (Tribute to 9/11) scheduled for September 11th at the CAL Center, Reedsburg, is selling at a good pace. As of mid-May, we sold 387 seats, which leaves approximately 200 seats still available. If interested in tickets, call Richard Knuth at (608) 393-7314. All seats are reserved seating.

 The Board reviewed and accepted the financial report developed for April 2021.

. There was conversation about BASCO having to have “event insurance” for our Mollie B Fundraiser but Knuth advised that the school and our insurance carrier advised that it was not necessary.

 Knuth explained that the price of brats for our fundraiser was increased to $4.00 because the price of the chips and the new buns have increased and he changed the one price rather than two.

 Further plans were completed for the Pancake Breakfast scheduled for Sunday, May 16 at Thunderbird Lanes in Baraboo. Tickets are $6.00 in advance, $8.00 the day of the event and children under 6 are free.

 The Accreditation Committee advised that they are about ready to present their work to the Board for review and then submitting it.

 President Schmidt appointed M. Vroman, B. Telvick and L. Gates to assist her with setting up a procedure for renewing the birthday and other celebrations that were held at the Center now that the pandemic restrictions are being relaxed.
