In keeping with the spirit of Valen nes Day, we decided to ask the Woods what they like to do for Valen nes Day. Surprisingly, they both said the same thing. They like to go out to dinner. Mr. Woods also told us that Mrs. Woods was his one and only Valen ne! So we asked our staff what they liked most about Valen ne’s Day and here are the answers: Warheads —Gio Chocolate —Abigail Cards —Olivia Chocolate Carmel Truffles —Gabe Something with Sugar —Colleen Food — Mei Listening to Mr. Temple play classical guitar music while bi ng into every piece of chocolate in the heart shape box he gives me — Mrs. Temple Ea ng the half-eaten chocolates Mrs. Temple leaves in box— Mr. Temple Teacher Feature Mrs. Zduniak by Owen Longeneker
Mrs. Zduniak is one of the kindest teach- ers we know. Her classroom has a wall of fame for her students. She loves uni- corns! Mrs. Zduniak is very approachable and very caring. We asked Mrs. Zduniak the following 8 ques ons: Q. How long have you been teaching? A. I’ve been teaching for 25 years in Red Hook.
Q. What was your least favorite subject as a kid? A. Math
Q. What would you do if you had a million dollars? A. I would build a giant dome for kids to play.
Q. What is your greatest fear? A. A house fire.
Q. What pets do you have? A. Three cats—Rocky, Zeus and Mouse. I also have a gecko named Lucky.
Q. What sports did you play in high school? A. I played field hockey, track and basket- ball
Q. What is your favorite season? A. Fall
Q. Why do you like teaching? A. The reason I enjoy teaching goes way back for me. I grew up playing school with my siblings and I always wanted to teach. I love when a student "gets" it and that lightbulb goes off.
2 Lip Sync 2017—An Interview with Mr. Brown by Giovanni Santoro and Owen Longeneker
Q: Mr. Brown, what did you do for the lip sync? A: I produced it! I made it happen! I also put up the posters. There is also more than throwing up a sign and have people sign up for a show. There is so much more to it. It is also very sad to cut someone. We don’t want them to go up onto the stage and humiliate themselves and not want to do it again. We want the per- formers to come back next year and give it all they’ve got. Students also run the show. We have studens do the tech under their advisor, Mr. Temple. We had Clyde (7 th grade), Jonathan (6th grade), Dan (6 th grade) and Danny (7th grade). The tech was very good this year! I think it is much cooler that kids are running the show. We also had a vote to find the charity the money was going to. As a result of a vote conducted in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Social Studies class, all proceeds went to St. Jude’s Children’s Reseach Hospital and the Dutchess County S.P.C.A. We send a le er along with the money which was in the amount of 1,265 dollars this year! I do it because I like to do it. I don’t get payed for it, I volunteer. I want to stay independent. Mrs. Temple was a great co-producer for the last 2 years. I thought some of the best acts for this year were sixth graders. Payton Gardner, and Vinh Tran. I’m happy they will be here at LAMS for the next two years. I also like that teacher aids are back stage, it is a lot less pressure.
Q: Did you play in bands when you were younger? A: Yes I did! I played in bands in Manha an for 7 years.
Thank you to our audience, Mr. Brown, and everyone that was involved in this successful charity event. The Performers: Maddie Kerzner, Maddie Anderson, Rachel Bertomeu, Lauren Blum, Paris Tretola, Kelcie Horst, Erika Lju ch, Gavin Roca, Payton Gardner, Mr. Pogemiller, Kate Kelly, Hannah Mercier, Maggie Wain- wright, Fiona Beer, Mollly Odlum, Lily Ka a, Ana Murphy, Vinh Tran, Maia Weiss, Maxeell Barnes, and our amazing faculty and staff par cipants. 17 DID YOU KNOW?
“Did You Know ?” is an interesting section of our newspaper where you can learn something incredible about some of our school’s most beloved teachers. Did you know Mr. Fleischman is addicted to Madden Mobile and his overall is 98? He’s also been playing gui- tar since 12 years old. Did you know that Mrs. Zduniak is the middle child of 9 siblings? Did you know that Mrs. Wood had Miss Strever as a teacher in middle school? Did you know that Mr. Kaplan has read over 1000 Batman comics? Did you know that Ms. McCarthy has eaten emu and kangaroo when she was in Australia? Did you know that Mrs. Messmer saw Prince 3 times? Did you know that Mrs. Ellis saw the Rolling Stones? Did you know that Mrs. Gravino once went sky diving? Did you know that Mrs. Pena -Perez used to be a reporter for the Gannett Company—a newspaper in Rock- land, NY? She also lived in the Dominican Republic for 14 years. Did you know that Madam Kayden has been to France 5 times? If she wins the lottery she plans on moving to the Mediterranean. She was also a student in Red Hook.
DID YOU KNOW? Ten awesome facts you probably did not know:
1. New Zealand has more sheep than people! 2. If you run in the rain, you will get 50% wetter than if you stand still! 3. A stack of a billion dollar bills weighs more than 15 army tanks. 4. The human brain remembers more negative memories than positive ones. 5. A crocodile cannot stick its tongue out. 6. A shrimp's heart is in its head. 7. Rubber bands work better when refrigerated. 8. There are 293 ways to make change for a dollar. 9. Almonds are a member of the peach family 10.An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain.
18 WEIRDO’S WORDS by Ian Mar n Triskaidekaphobia You may have heard of the popular supers on that the day Friday the 13 th brings bad luck or disaster. Peo- ple believe in this urban legend and others surrounding the number 13 being unlucky due to some form of triskaidekaphobia. The defini on of this word is “supers on or phobia of the number 13”.
Mesonoxian The use of this word is similar to last issue’s “Nudiuster an”. However, this doesn't describe something that happened “the day before yesterday”. Rather, this word describes an occurrence at midnight. Perhaps you woke up late at night for a mesonoxian snack. Or maybe you heard noises during the mesonoxian hour. The defini on of this word is “pertaining to midnight”.
Yarborough Have you ever performed a magic trick with cards? Lots of card games and card tricks require a yarborough. The defini on of this word is “a set of cards not containing a number greater than nine”.
Lackadaisical It can be annoying when you want to do something fun but someone else doesn’t. If they’re just do lazy or unmo vated to do anything, it’s called being lackadaisical. If their too red or careless to go anywhere, it’s called being lackadaisical. The defini on of this word is “unenthusias c; lazy”.
Keep track of your copies of Newsflash , because near the end of the year there will be an essay contest. Whoever can write the best story using at least 5 words from the Weirdo’s Words sec on wins a prize from the principal and their work will be submi ed into the newspaper.

19 Just Another Day in the Dungeons and Dragons Club -Alina Pinto, Connor Gibson, Nicholas Jameison, Max Weiler, Orrin Dow, Gio Santoro, Andrew Jameison, Kevin Merchan, Ahren Schneider, Jonah Romm
Let’s get introduced: Robin — I’ve had four cats, one who dat- ed a dragon. I also had a giant nuclear- powered dog that was on the verge of a thermo-nuclear explosion. My mother is a Body-Switcher, and she is in search of immortality. Eris — I have a sword arm, and I’m a Rogue Archer (a tricky combina on, but it works for me). I own a tavern in Orctown, and my en re family was de- stroyed and I don’t know why — I learned this from a note that dropped from the sky. Cool facts about me: my eye glows and I successfully conquered a Drag Queen. NoName — Birthed up by a Void Dog, I am 20 years old. On my second day of life I reentered the Dog and ate a book with a pentagram on the cov- er. When I awoke from a dream I threw up a cat named Prdrdr, which ended up da ng one of Robin’s cats. Ocan — While trying to escape the Void Dog, I dug up 21 Pilots, who gave me an ac on figure. The Void-Dog caught me, swallowed me, and I tried to destroy him from inside, knocking out all his teeth with an ax. It did NOT go well.
The ac on begins in Eris’ tavern…. Everyone, including Prdrdr and a dragon are in Eris’ tavern. Robin a empts to dump a non-alcoholic beverage over the head of a random patron, who challenges Robin to a fight. The patron pulls out a 30-foot sword (“that’s a lot of feet” is someone’s reac on). Robin fights back with a shard of glass, and manages to cut out the patron’s Achille’s tendon, which is then made into the “Meat Special” at the tavern. This, howev- er, does not slow down the patron, so Robin tries to convince everyone in the tavern that this man’s invinci- bility proves he is a Demon. But the tavern patrons choose to place bets on the fight, pu ng all their money on the sword-wielding patron who’s Achille’s tendon is now on the tavern menu. Robin is no match, and the tavern patrons win big. Ocan decides to venture out from the tavern to find a shield that is currently inside the Void-Dog. As he approaches, the Void-Dog sucks in Ocan. He then wakes up in the middle of a desert, and drops from the sky into a small village. He tries to convince the people in the village that he is a Deity. Robin knows that Ocan is in trouble, and sends a shield, that also falls from the sky into the desert village. The villagers are so impressed by the appearance of the shield, they decide that the shield is the true Deity, and intend on mak- ing Ocan a human sacrifice to their new leader. Robin, Eris, and NoName start equipping themselves with gear, preparing themselves for adventur- ing. Eris decides to pay 256 gold coins to get diamond studs on her sword-arm. They head out from the tav- ern and enter a cave, and they are aware of a Water Demon in the cave. Prdrdr is with them, who proceeds to have a fusion dance with the Dragon…..

Some other adventurers in a nearby cave… DM 1 — I am a deity who descends to the earth on occasion to deliver pizza. I spend most my me playing Rocket League while watching Ne lix. Ashe — I was recently stricken with amnesia, so I know very li le about who I am. I know that I am from a Dragon -born race, so I can breathe fire. Estevan — Like everyone in this cave, I have am- nesia, and the only things I know are that I like dumplings, I’m shy, and I was stuck in a tree for a long me, for unknown reasons. Galik — I’m a Gnome and a Bard (a musician who works magic). My defining moment was when I was in prison, I escaped by magically moving the bolts of the door and got rid of the guard. What is maddening is that everyone else here tells me this story is a LIE!
The ac on con nues… In this par cular cave there are three doors, and green and black orbs that glow some mes. Galik chooses a door, opens it and finds a sleeping Ogre. Upset that he has been wakened, the Ogre tries to grab Galik, who runs through the Ogres legs, but trips and slides. Estevan grabs the nearest weapon in an a empt to save Ga- lik, and Estevan surprises the Ogre by kicking him in a very cri cal place. Unfortunately for Estevan, the Ogre is wearing a steel athle c supporter, injuring the kicker’s foot. Ashe reaches a chest that they spo ed in the cave, and he finds 10 fire-arrows and a bow. Galik, the musician, finds in the chest a flute and a dagger. He throws the dagger to Estevan, who manages to stab the Ogre … to be con nued!
Note: all characters, conflicts, and se ngs are the result of the imagina ons of the par cipants, with the help of the guidelines and tradi ons of the game of Dungeons & Dragons. The success or failure of the char- acters when in a ba le is determined by the roll of a 12-sided die, and the leader at the table, the Dungeon Master, then determines the outcome of each conflict.

23 24 25 26 ASK SALMA Dear Salma: What is your favorite part of school?
Dear Fellow Student: My favorite part of school is lunch me. I like it most because I get to talk to my friends and we always have a good me laughing about something. I also like it because I get to eat of course! Dear Salma: How would you like to help the world?
Dear Fellow Student: Well first I would like to end gun violence. There are so many shoo ngs that it’s insane.
I would also like woman to earn equal rights. Some people say, “don’t women have all rights?” As a ma er of fact they don’t. Even if a man and a woman have the same job, a man will get paid more. That’s not fair. I know several woman that work very hard and they get paid less than the men that work with them.
Another way I would like to help the world is with ending discrimina on. I happen to be Mid- dle-Eastern and I get discriminated against all the me. Racism is not okay and our world needs to know that. Aren’t we all equal? We are different in our own way, which makes us unique but nobody should hold themselves higher than anyone.
Another way I would like to change the world is with the LGBQ and Community. Members of the LGBQ and community should not have to suffer with discrimina on.
Dear Salma: What would you risk your life for?
Dear Fellow Student: I would risk my life for my beliefs. As a feminist, I believe everyone should be equal!
When you see the ASK SALMA box in the cafeteria, be sure to ask me your ques ons!
