The Titanic Origin of Humans: The Melian Nymphs and Zagreus Velvet Yates HE FIRST PART of this paper examines a minor mystery in Hesiod’s Theogony, centering around the Melian Nymphs, Tin order to assess the suggestions, both ancient and modern, that the Melian Nymphs were the mothers of the human race. The second part examines the afterlife of Hesiod’s Melian Nymphs over a thousand years later, in the allegorizing myths of late Neoplatonism, in order to suggest that the Hesiodic myth in which the Melian Nymphs primarily figure, namely the castration of Ouranos, has close similarities to a central Neoplatonic myth, that of Zagreus. Both myths depict a “Titanic” act of destruction and separation which leads to the birth of the human race. Both myths furthermore seek to account for a divine element which human nature retains from its origins. In the tale, Persephone holds the tension between Life and Death Forces and in doing so produces a new alterative, Rebirth. As maiden she is ever ready to birth, to give Life. Although Persephone's name means 'Bringer of Destruction', as Queen of the Underworld she regenerates the Souls that come to her realm. The mythic tale suggests that the resolution of the tension between Life and Death leads to the transcendent third. The prior two chapters focus on transformation that is needed for the feminine to carry out the “return” from its suppressed state. The chapter on Pele and Hi’iaka brought attention to feminine transformation that occurred when relationship based on fertility gave way to relationship based on personal encounter. The chapter on The Goose Girl addresses the transformation that leads to feminine personhood when daughter separates from the mother. In this chapter attention is given to the transformation that rebirth brings about, namely, enabling and revitalizing the Individuation Process. -

DOI 10.1007/s12138-008-0009-y Black Orpheus, Myth and Ritual: A Morphological Reading* HARDY FREDRICKSMEYER # Springer Science + Business Media B.V. 2008 Black Orpheus (Orfeu Negro; M. Camus, 1959) drew on classical myth and ritual to win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Yet no one has analyzed the film with reference to its classical background. This paper argues that the film closely follows two narrative patterns (Separation-Liminality- Incorporation and the Heroic Journey) employed by the myth of Orpheus and Eury- dice, and related stories. This morphological approach reveals the cinematic Euridice as a “female adolescent initiand” whose loss of virginity and death are foreshadowed from her first scene. The film’s setting of Carnaval promotes Euridice’s adolescent ini- tiation as it duplicates ancient Greek Dionysian festivals. Orfeu emerges as not only a shamanistic hero, but also an associate of Apollo and, antithetically, an avatar of Diony- sus and substitute sacrifice for the god. Finally, the film not only replicates but also reinvents the ancient, rural and European myth of Orpheus and Eurydice by resituat- ing it in a modern city of the Africanized “New World.” A Stephanie, la compagna della mia vita lack Orpheus (Orfeu Negro; M. I TOPONIMI DEL SEPRIO I TOPONIMI DEL SEPRIO INTRODUZIONE Le etimologie proposte per buona parte dei toponimi del Seprio e delle aree immediatamente adiacenti risultano spesso fantasiose, dubbie e contraddittorie: scopo di questo studio è di tentare di stabilirne l’origine e il significato reali. Ricordiamo, innanzitutto, che i nomi di luogo, quando furono attribuiti, avevano un significato preciso e comprensibile, quasi sempre legato ad una divinità, al nome di una persona o a qualche visibile caratteristica fisica del territorio. A seconda delle epoche e delle mode, cambiarono i criteri di denominazione, ma rimasero sempre “semplici” spesso ripetitivi, come oggi i vari Albergo Bellavista, Ristorante della Posta, Trattoria da Giovanni, Residence Lago Blu, Villa Francesca, Cascina Bianchi, Santa Maria di..., Podere del Roveto, Grand Hôtel Terme, Villaggio le Ginestre, eccetera. In un lungo periodo di colonizzazione agricola del territorio, risultarono sempre particolarmente popolari i toponimi “prediali”, indicanti cioè il nome del fondatore e primo proprietario dell’insediamento. Ben raramente le località furono “ribattezzate”, ma i loro nomi subirono radicali modifiche, legate alle variazioni progressive della lingua e della pronuncia; con il passare del tempo, l’origine dei toponimi fu dimenticata e il loro significato divenne incomprensibile. Facciamo degli esempi. Sabaudia, Carbonia e Latina [già Littoria] sono toponimi recenti; ne conosciamo sia il significato che l’origine: tra una generazione saranno dimenticati. Montechiaro, Villafranca, Castelnuovo, Roncaccio sono toponimi medievali ancora comprensibili: abbiamo però dimenticato perchè si chiamino così. Di Busto, Varese, Tradate e Abbiate non conosciamo il significato nè l’origine: possiamo solo ipotizzarli.
