GRAY CARTER

Greetings from the Pulp and Paper Foundation!

I am honored to serve as your Foundation President during this record-breaking year! We’ve been quite busy as support for our program broadens. Our student enrollment is at record levels and giving from member companies and individuals continues to grow. We have a lot to be thankful for and it would not happen without the involvement of our NC State Pulp and Paper Foundation Board members, dedicated alumni and friends, and the College, Department and program faculty and staff.

Our Board members are valuable assets to our program and contributed heavily to our many achievements this year, which include:

• A record breaking fundraising year with $248,000 in corporate gifts and $76,350 in individual gifts. As a Board, 76% are personal contributors. • Supporting student work experiences with high levels of full time placement for program graduates, hiring a record number of freshman summer interns, and increasing the number of co-ops. • Encouraging equipment donations with a $120,000 gift from ABB for lab testing equipment. • Supporting faculty and administration for our upcoming ABET accreditation in Fall 2016.

We are now celebrating 62 years of funding and developing leaders for the future. I find this venture both exciting and rewarding, especially when our hard work is so evident among our amazing students. I want to thank the board, alumni, friends, faculty, staff and volunteers for making this all possible and for a job well done. We are counting on your help to make the new year as successful and meaningful as this year has been for all of us.

F. Gray Carter President, NC State Pulp & Paper Foundation Owner, The Carter Firm Class of 1984

4 REPORT FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JENNIFER PIERCY

I would like to extend warm greetings from within the University, foundation and program. There is no greater joy than working with students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors and friends who diligently challenge the status quo and shape our world class operation!

I am often overwhelmed at the endeavors our partners and constituents pursue outside of NC State on our behalf. Not only are we surrounded by top notch faculty who are passionate and dedicated to their research, our industry and students, we are privileged to partner with people like you.

This fall, as we enter a capital campaign for the University, I am thankful for the support of the many, many people who will ensure our program exceeds our goals for the University, including our:

• Students, who excel in real world work experiences, adding value to our curriculum and industry. These students hold leadership roles on campus and champion stewardship to their program, University and community, like no others. • Faculty, who are recognized globally for their technical knowledge, research and expertise. Their open door policies encourage mentoring and develop budding engineers into fine young professionals who will lead our industry into the future. • Alumni, who are dedicated, involved and passionate about our program and industry, no matter where their careers take them. Our alumni achieved record giving levels this year for our program and inspired our current students and young alumni to do the same. They also hosted faculty and staff for visits around the nation, connected with each other through class ambassadors, and instigated our Inaugural Alumni Reunion planned for September 30 – October 1, 2016. We cannot wait for this event. • Friends, donors and industry partners, who are as vigorous as our alumni. This vital group of key individuals are always part of our family.

Our tremendous efforts as a program and foundation are a beacon of NC State’s land grant mission and “THINK & DO” attitude. Together, we solve the problems of tomorrow. We thank you for forging powerful partnerships with us to make our world a better place!

Jennifer Piercy Executive Director, NC State Pulp & Paper Foundation

5 MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN DR. MARY C. WATZIN

Our Paper Science and Engineering program is thriving, and I am privileged to say it is one of the best in the country. With a strong hands-on education, our students continue to advance our college’s mission of providing cutting edge solutions for the sustainable use of natural resources.

The Paper Science and Engineering program continues to boast 100 percent job placement and some of the highest starting salaries on campus; in no small part because our students, like Manon MacAllister featured on page 14, graduate with extensive experiential learning opportunities not found in the classroom. All of our students gain in-depth industry knowledge through internships, co-ops, and study abroad, and enjoy both personal and professional growth through their experiences.

We are pleased that with your help, so many of our students receive the financial support they need to pursue their passions in the paper industry. The Pulp and Paper Foundation supports one of the largest endowments per capita on campus. In addition to traditional scholarships funded through donor and Foundation support, the program’s BioResources Journal, which celebrated a decade of success this year, continues to reinvest in our students by using earnings from the journal to fund scholarships.

I am also excited to recognize Dr. Hasan Jameel, featured on page 13, as the 2016 Jordan Distinguished Professor for Natural Resource Innovation. His research with lignin and the commercialization of products to improve sustainability will enable us to continue supporting industry advancements. By working closely with graduate students, Dr. Jameel is also developing future leaders in bio-refinery technology.

It was with mixed emotions that I accepted Dr. Steve Kelley’s decision to step down as department head and return to the faculty after nearly 10 years of outstanding service. After an exhaustive search, it is my great pleasure to welcome Dr. Marko Hakovirta, highlighted on page 19, to the College as the new Forest Biomaterials Department Head. We are thrilled to have Dr. Hakovirta, an internationally recognized leader in biomaterials science and technology, joining our leadership team. He has an outstanding record of accomplishment in both academia and industry and will bring a diversity of experience and a wealth of new ideas and perspectives to the department. I would also like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Dave Tilotta for graciously assuming the role of Interim Department Head for Forest Biomaterials during this transition.

I am so proud of our Paper Science and Engineering students, alumni, faculty, staff, volunteers and supporters. Your continued support of this prestigious program keeps our college robust and relevant in a constantly changing world. We are strong today because of the life-long commitment so many of our dedicated alumni, donors and industry partners make to our program. Thank you for all you do.

Mary C. Watzin Dean, NC State College of Natural Resources

6 7 UPDATE ON THE PSE PROGRAM 2015-2016 Dr. Med Byrd

The Paper Science and Engineering program continues to be robust, with a total enrollment of nearly 200 students. In fall 2015, we welcomed 42 new freshmen into the program, our third consecutive year with 40 or more first-year students.

The 2015-2016 class of new recruits, by the numbers: • 67% of students received a Foundation scholarship. • 39% of students are female. • 22% of students are from out of state. • 19% of students are ethnic minorities.

The quality of the students joining our program continues to improve, with scores and rankings rising above the average for the College of Engineering students. After one semester, 64% of the class received a 3.5 GPA or higher and two-thirds of the students secured an industry summer internship or a semester co-op position for Fall 2016.

After one semester, nine students left due to academic difficulty or to pursue other programs, and another seven after the second semester. However, ten new freshmen and seven new upperclassmen joined us, 2015-2016 Year in Summary resulting in a net of 43 new students for the year.

All first-year students participated in the new Freshmen Leadership Number of graduates: 26 Initiative class. In addition to classic concepts of leadership, freshmen Incoming freshmen, fall 2015: 42 are also exposed to broad concepts about the industry and future careers. Feedback and ratings for the course were positive and we will continue the Job Placement at Graduation: 96% course for the incoming 2016 students. Transfer students added: 17 The year has also brought great change to the PSE program, including Average Salary: $69,500 on-boarding two new faculty members, a new Department Head (Dr. Marko Hakovirta), new departmental faculty hires in sustainability % out of state (new students): 22% and a new pilot plant manager, alumnus Cullen Alexander.

Our two new faculty members, Dr. Lokendra Pal and Dr. Ronalds Gonzalez, made their teaching debut at the undergradu- ate level. Dr. Pal teaches the senior papermaking course, as well as a new senior course in Process Engineering. Dr. Gonzalez teaches the senior-level course in strategic business processes for the paper industry (the first part of our two- course senior design sequence). Our seniors are seeing a real benefit from these two faculty members.

A time of change is also an opportunity for improvement. The faculty are continually seeking to elevate the national and international recognition of our program and have expressed a desire to include more material on converting/ packaging and tissue and coated products. Recommendations from industry and alumni will be solicited toward this goal. These proposed changes will be presented to the Program Advisory Committee this fall.

Job placements are quite strong, with most graduating seniors receiving multiple (and competitive) offers. The average starting salary is approaching $70,000 per year, and continues to be the highest average salary for all programs in the College of Engineering. More than 60% of all graduates for 2015-2016 accepted full-time jobs with pulp and paper manufacturers, 19% with industry suppliers, and 19 % with companies outside the industry.

The continued strength and success of the Paper Science and Engineering program is only possible through the sustained support, on multiple levels, of our board, alumni, donors, friends and industry partners. We simply cannot thank you enough.
