Instructions Make dances easy for students to learn by implementing some of the following techniques: Rhythms should be taught like other sport skills. Avoid striving for perfection so students know it is acceptable to make mistakes. Teach a variety of dances rather than one or two in depth in case some students find it difficult to master a specific dance. 1. Teach the dances without using partners. 2. Allow youngsters to move in any direction without left-right orientation. 3. Use scattered formation instead of circles. 4. Emphasize strong movements such as clapping and stamping to increase involvement. 5. Play the music at a slower speed when first learning the dance.

Jugglehead Mixer (American) Music Source: Any music with a definite and steady beat Formation: Double circle facing counterclockwise in promenade position Directions: Actions described are for the inside partner; directions are opposite for the partner on the outside of the circle. Measures Action 1--4 Do a two-step left and two-step right and take four walking steps forward. 5--8 Repeat measures 1--4. 9--10 Inside partner takes the outside partner’s right hand and walks around to face the person behind. 11--12 Inside partner turns the person behind with the left hand. 13--14 Inside partner turns partner with the right hand going all the way around. 15--16 Inside partner steps up one place to the outside person ahead, who becomes the new partner.

New couple joins inside hands. (Step, close, step, hop; Step, close, step, hop; Repeat for a total of 16 polka steps)

Tinikling (Philippine Islands) Music Source: WWCD-8095; WWC-9015 Formation: Sets of fours scattered around the room. Each set has two strikers and two dancers. Directions: Two 8-foot bamboo poles and two crossbars on which the poles rest are needed for the dance. A striker kneels at each end of the poles; both strikers hold the end of a pole in each hand. The music is in waltz meter, 3/4 time, with an accent on the first beat. The strikers slide and strike the poles together on count 1. On the other two beats of the waltz measure, the poles are opened about 15 inches apart, lifted an inch or so, and tapped twice on the crossbars in time to counts 2 and 3. The rhythm “close, tap, tap” is continued throughout the dance. Basically, the dance requires that a step be done outside the poles on the close (count 1) and that two steps be done inside the poles (counts 2 and 3) when the poles are tapped on the crossbars. Many step combinations have been devised. The basic tinikling step should be practiced until it is mastered. The step is done singly, although two dancers are performing. Each dancer takes a position at an opposite end and on the opposite side so that the dancer’s right side is to the bamboo poles. Count 1: Step slightly forward with the left foot. Count 2: Step with the right foot between the poles.

Count 3: Step with the left foot between the poles. 3 of 6 GRADES 5-8 LESSON FOCUS Rhythmic Movement Skills — Jugglehead Mixer, Ten Pretty Girls, Klumpakojis, Tinikling, Old Dan Tucker, Shindig in the Barn

Count 4: Step with the right outside to dancer’s own right. Count 5: Step with the left between the poles. Count 6: Step with the right between the poles. Count 7: Step with the left outside to the original position. The initial step (count 1) is used only to get the dance under way. The last step (count 7) to original position is actually the beginning of a new series (7, 8, 9--10, 11, 12). Tinikling steps also can be adjusted to 4/4 rhythm (close, close, tap, tap), which requires the poles to be closed on two counts and open on the other two. The basic foot pattern is two steps outside the poles and two inside. For the sake of conformity, we present all routines in the original 3/4 time (close, tap, tap). If other rhythms are used, adjust accordingly. Dancers can go from side to side, or can return to the side from which they entered. The dance can be done singly, with the two dancers moving in opposite directions from side to side, or the dancers can enter from and leave toward the same side. Dancers can do the same step patterns or do different movements. They can dance as partners, moving side by side with inside hands joined, or facing each other with both hands joined. Teaching suggestions: Steps should be practiced first with stationary poles or with lines drawn on the floor. Jump ropes can be used as stationary objects over which to practice. Students handling the poles should concentrate on watching each other rather than the dancer to avoid becoming confused by the dancer’s feet. To gain a sense of the movement pattern for 3/4 time, slap both thighs with the hands on the “close,” and clap the hands twice for movements inside the poles. For 4/4 time, slap the right thigh with the right hand, then the left thigh with the left hand, followed by two claps. This routine should be done to music, with the poles closing and opening as indicated. Getting the feel of the rhythm is important.
