Contents French creation is definitely one of the highlights this year, with more than thirty features and shorts being showcased in the festival’s numerous sections. The French respond by sending their elite counterterrorism group, which operate under Captain Philippe Legorjus. He is determined to negotiate a peaceful and bloodless resolution to the crisis, but it soon becomes evident that numerous forces threaten to undermine him. An election in France that pits left against right, Mitterrand against Chirac, means that the hostage crisis half a world away gets turned into a political football. Omar Raddad, a Moroccan gardener, is sentenced to 18 years for the murder of a wealthy widow for whom he was working. In 1994, a writer convinced by Raddad’s innocence, started to defend his case. Camille 15 and Sullivan 19, love each other passionately, but Sullivan wants to go to South America for a year and this project drives Camille to despair. In fall he leaves and slowly stops writing to her. After a suicide attempt, Camille ends up in hospital. 2003, four years have passed. Camille works, studies architecture and has met a famous architect, Lorenz, who restores her self-confidence. After 7 years she sees Sullivan again… WAVELENGTHS BOUQUETS 11-20 ROSE LOWDER, FRANCE, 2010, 11MN Rose Lowder’s ongoing Bouquets series is among the major works of the past two decades. Filmed at various European ecological sites, Bouquets 11-20 vibrate with a splendour inherent to the pleasure-pull of nature’s imperiled state. WAVELENGTHS SANS TITRE NEÏL BELOUFA, FRANCE, 2010, 15MN A chasm between what we hear and see in Neïl Beloufa’s kaleidoscopic Untitled echoes the fabrication of its ink-jet mise en scène. As a grand site of bricolage, a California-style villa plays host to contradicting testimonies, which demonstrate the permeability of knowledge, and the enchanting/foreboding of its sculptural set pieces. FOR MORE DETAILS: WWW.TIFF.NET/THEFESTIVAL 5 Visual Arts JAKOB+MACFARLANE SEPTEMBER 21-22 JAKOB+MACFARLANE In the framework of the series “Vis-à-vis architecture : when France and Canada connect architects”, coordinated by the Embassy of France in Canada and the Institut français, the architects Dominique Jakob et Brendan MacFarlane will be in Ontario on September 21 and 22 to present their work and vision. Jakob+MacFarlane is a multicultural and pluridisciplinary architecture agency based in Paris, France. The agency’s work includes exploring digital technologies both as a conceptual contribution and a production method, using new materials as a way to create a closer, more flexible and responsible environment. Their main projects include hightening of the Maison T at the Garenne-Colombes (1998), Restaurant Georges in the Centre Georges Pompidou (2000), the reconstruction of the Theatre Pont-Audemer in Eure (2000), library Florence Loewy Books by Artists in Paris (2001), the New Communication Centre for Renault in Boulogne-Billancourt (2004), the Theatre Maxime Gorki (2004), the Foundation Entreprise Ricard (2007), as well as the Docks of Paris, Cité de la mode et du design, and the 100 social appartments Hérold in Paris (2008). The ongoing projects are the Pavillon Orange Quai Rambaud in Lyon, the Fond régional d’Art Contemporain de la Région Centre in Orléans (“Regional Fund for Contemporary Art”) the Conservatory of Dance and Music in Noisy le Sec, as well as the Swiss Cultural Centre in Paris. Recently, they were awarded the first honourable mention at the International Competition of the Taipei Performing Arts Centre. Their projects have been exhibited in different museums around the world, including at Victoria & Albert Museum (London, 2003), SFMOMA (San Francisco, 2004), the Museum of Architecture (Moscow, 2000), the Artist Space (New York, 2003), Carnegie Melon (USA, 2011), Mori Art Museum (Tokyo, 2004), Pompidou Centre, Pavillon de l’Arsenal (Paris), the Bartlett School Gallery (London, 1997), as well as at the Rencontres internationales d’architecture d’Orléans / Archilab (1999, 2001, 2003). They were also part of the French selection for the Venice Architecture Biennial in 2002 and of the international selection in 2004 and 2008. "Daniel & Ophelia" will be at the "Dakota Tavern" Friday September 9 at 8:00pm. The musician Daniel Denecheau plays real french accordeon style, diatonic, chromatic... and mixte, which is quite rare. He is one of the best accordeon player in France in this repertoire. With Ophelia, who sings in the tradition of the genre, they will present a repertoire of songs from the 20's till the 50's.
