18 February 2015 The Hon Peter Dutton MP Minister for Immigration and Border Protection PO Box 6022 Parliament House Canberra ACT 2600 Dear Minister, I am writing to you out of a sense of frustration and as a last resort in relation to the Joint Review of Border Fees, Charges and Taxes (the Review) which was notified to industry on 7 September 2014. In relation to the Review, the Customs Brokers and Forwarders Council of Australia Inc. (CBFCA) represents its members who in the first instance, are the entities responsible for the payment of any costs, charges and/or taxes levied by the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service (ACBP) in its cost recovery arrangements or by the Department of Agriculture in fee for service delivery. The CBFCA provided a commentary to the Review which is led by the ACBP and has, on a variety of occasions, communicated to the ACBP on issues referenced in discussion papers and industry forums. Correspondence and e-mails to the project lead on particular aspects and concerns as to the Review have failed to elicit any return communication. Not only does this wall of silence not give effect to any appropriate consultation, it fails the key test in stakeholder engagement. There are significant impacts, not only on service providers to international trade logistics and supply chain management, but also to importers of record, and eventually the impact on end consumers as to these charges. Some of the key determinations in the Review also relate to the current public debate on the low value imports driven out of online international sales via e-commerce transactions. Your intervention on this issue would be appreciated in not only ensuring appropriate consultation but also noting the impact on small business as to these costs recovery arrangements and the aspect of regulatory red tape in this process. Submission to the Senate Select Committee into the Political Influence of Donations Dr Charles Livingstone & Ms Maggie Johnson Gambling and Social Determinants Unit School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine Monash University 9 October 2017 1 Introduction Gambling in Australia is a prime cause of avoidable harm, with the harms of gambling estimated to be of the same order of magnitude as alcohol, and far higher than that associated with illicit drug consumption. (Browne et al, 2016; 2017). The gambling industry is a major donor to Australian political parties and politicians and appears to hold considerable cachet with many political actors, at both federal and state level. In this, it appears to be similar to other industries that produce harmful products, such as alcohol and tobacco. Its purpose in donating to political parties and politicians is similar; it seeks to deny the harmful effects of its products, delay or wind back reform, avoid effective regulation, and continue to extract profits for as long as possible. a) The level of influence that political donations exert over the public policy decisions of political parties, Members of Parliament and Government administration; The Australian gambling industry has utilised political donations as a mechanism to exert considerable influence over relevant public policy. THE HON JOSH FRYDENBERG MP Treasurer SENATOR THE HON MATHIAS CORMANN Minister for Finance MEDIA RELEASE 23 July 2020 ECONOMIC AND FISCAL UPDATE The Economic and Fiscal Update released today shows the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our nation’s finances as well as the scale of the support that has been provided to prepare our health system and cushion the blow for millions of households and businesses. The Government has acted swiftly and decisively to provide economic support for workers, households and businesses of around $289 billion or the equivalent of 14.6 per cent of GDP. This necessary and unprecedented level of economic support, coupled with declines in taxation receipts of $31.7 billion in 2019-20 and $63.9 billion in 2020-21, has significantly impacted the budget position. Payments variations, including in demand driven programs, also increased by $15.7 billion, predominantly as a result of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economy. The underlying cash balance is forecast to decrease from balance in 2018-19 to a $85.8 billion deficit in 2019-20 and a $184.5 billion deficit in 2020-21. Through the Government’s strong fiscal management, Australia entered the COVID-19 crisis in a position of economic and fiscal strength. We returned the budget to balance for the first time in 11 years which underpinned the capacity to respond to this unprecedented shock. Our fiscal support is targeted, timely and temporary to ensure that it does not undermine the structural integrity of the Budget with all three major credit ratings agencies having now reaffirmed Australia’s AAA credit rating during the pandemic.

About Mathias Cormann Mathias Cormann was until recently Australia’s longest-serving Finance Minister and Leader of the Government in the Australian Senate. The Many Faces of Scott Morrison — and the Things That Turn Them Off and On
The many faces of Scott Morrison — and the things that turn them off and on The prime minister doesn't get angry all that often. But it's worth paying attention to the times when he does. For public consumption, there are four Scott Morrisons. There’s the daggy dad (how good is the daggy dad?); the serious leader (see agitprop photos of Scott-at-desk); the smarmy dismisser (reserved for parliament and the media); and, most rarely, righteous anger Scott. We saw righteous anger Scott in full incandescence last week, calling a snap press conference in response to a tweet and expressing Australia’s national outrage at a faked image depicting something which Australian special forces soldiers are actually accused of doing in Afghanistan. Scott, described by the official transcription service we also call mainstream media, was “visibly angry”. Ooh. Scott, a man of strong moral conviction, gets occasionally exercised to high emotion by truly dreadful things. It’s instructive for all of us, since our leader sets the ethical tone, to reflect on the kinds of matters that do, or do not, invoke his moral rage. The high (or low) point of outrage for Scott was, of course, the 2018 outbreak of needles in strawberries. That was so horrific that Scott made new laws to punish the “grubs” and “cowards” responsible. In 2020, undeniably the worst year in living memory, Scott has actually remained mostly sanguine, getting righteously upset very few times. The Chinese tweet, obviously; the Maritime Union of Australia, whose go-slow industrial action in Sydney was — according to Scott — stranding 40 container ships at sea.
