2017 EABC Business Delegation to Canberra Parliament House, Canberra 24-25 October 2017 Mission Report Overview On Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 October 2017, a delegation of EABC Members visited Parliament House in Canberra to meet with members of the Federal Government and Opposition. The delegation provided opportunities for members to engage in direct dialogue on the broad economic and business agenda, as well as the preparations underway for launching negotiations for an Australia-EU FTA. Programme The delegation programme on Tuesday 24 October included roundtable discussions with the Hon Michael McCormack MP, Minister for Small Business and the Hon Darren Chester MP, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport; followed by a Cocktail Reception with Guests of Honour the Hon Barnaby Joyce MP, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, Minister for Resources and Northern Australia; the Hon Keith Pitt MP, Assistant Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment; the Hon Chris Bowen MP, Shadow Treasurer; and Senator the Hon Mathias Cormann, Minister for Finance and Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate. The programme continued with a working dinner with ministerial guests including the Hon Kelly O’Dwyer MP, Minister for Revenue and Financial Services; the Hon Craig Laundy MP, Assistant Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science; and Justin Brown, Deputy Secretary, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. 18 February 2015 The Hon Peter Dutton MP Minister for Immigration and Border Protection PO Box 6022 Parliament House Canberra ACT 2600 Dear Minister, I am writing to you out of a sense of frustration and as a last resort in relation to the Joint Review of Border Fees, Charges and Taxes (the Review) which was notified to industry on 7 September 2014. In relation to the Review, the Customs Brokers and Forwarders Council of Australia Inc. (CBFCA) represents its members who in the first instance, are the entities responsible for the payment of any costs, charges and/or taxes levied by the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service (ACBP) in its cost recovery arrangements or by the Department of Agriculture in fee for service delivery. The CBFCA provided a commentary to the Review which is led by the ACBP and has, on a variety of occasions, communicated to the ACBP on issues referenced in discussion papers and industry forums. Correspondence and e-mails to the project lead on particular aspects and concerns as to the Review have failed to elicit any return communication. Not only does this wall of silence not give effect to any appropriate consultation, it fails the key test in stakeholder engagement. There are significant impacts, not only on service providers to international trade logistics and supply chain management, but also to importers of record, and eventually the impact on end consumers as to these charges. Some of the key determinations in the Review also relate to the current public debate on the low value imports driven out of online international sales via e-commerce transactions. -

Barton Deakin Brief: Second Morrison Government Ministry 29 June 2021 Overview Prime Minister Scott Morrison MP has announced his new Cabinet and Ministry following the change in The Nationals leadership. Cabinet Changes - Barnaby Joyce MP is the new Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development. Michael McCormack MP has been removed from the Cabinet and is now on the backbench. - David Littleproud MP retains his position as the Minster for Agriculture and is now also the Minister for Northern Australia. The role of Minister for Drought and Emergency Management will be given to Senator Bridget McKenzie. - Senator McKenzie will be returned to the Cabinet and is also the new Minister for Regionalisation, Regional Communications and Regional Education. - Keith Pitt MP, the Minister for Resources and Water will move to the outer Ministry, with his Northern Australia portfolio goes to David Littleproud MP. - Andrew Gee MP has been promoted to the Cabinet as the Minister for Defence Industry and Minister for Veterans’ Affairs. - Darren Chester MP, the former Minister for Veterans Affairs and Defence Personnel has been removed from the Cabinet and the Ministry. Gladys Berejiklian Dominic Perrottet Premier of NSW Treasurer John Barilaro Brad Hazzard Deputy Premier Minister for Health and Medical Research MEDIA RELEASE Wednesday, 28 July 2021 CERTAINTY FOR THE COMMUNITY AS RESTRICTIONS ADJUSTED AND VACCINES RAMPED UP Given low vaccination rates, the current stay at home orders will remain in place for another four weeks (until Saturday, 28 August at 12.01am) across Greater Sydney including the Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Wollongong and Shellharbour. This extra time will allow NSW residents to significantly increase the uptake of vaccines in areas most affected by the current outbreak and across the state. Premier Gladys Berejiklian said higher vaccination rates and following the health orders are the only way to guarantee the further easing of restrictions. “Though the Pfizer supply is insufficient there is plenty of AstraZeneca, and updated federal health advice recommends anyone aged 18 and over in Greater Sydney should access the jab,” Ms Berejiklian said. “If you are unvaccinated, please organise a jab as soon as you possibly can, especially if you live in an LGA of concern.” Other restriction changes are as follows: From midnight tonight (28 July): In line with exercise rules, Greater Sydney residents including the Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Wollongong and Shellharbour must limit their shopping to within their Local Government Area (LGA) or, if outside their LGA, within 10km from home, unless the item is not available locally. Given localised case numbers, the Parramatta, Campbelltown and Georges River LGAs will join the five existing LGAs of concern which are subject to an Authorised Workers Order. -

THE MOST VITRIOLIC PARLIAMENT EVIDENCE OF THE VITRIOLIC NATURE OF THE 43 RD PARLIAMENT AND POTENTIAL CAUSES Nicolas Adams, 321 382 For Master of Arts (Research), June 2016 The University of Melbourne, School of Social and Political Sciences Supervisors: Prof. John Murphy, Dr. Scott Brenton i Abstract It has been suggested that the period of the Gillard government was the most vitriolic in recent political history. This impression has been formed by many commentators and actors, however very little quantitative data exists which either confirms or disproves this theory. Utilising an analysis of standing orders within the House of Representatives it was found that a relatively fair case can be made that the 43rd parliament was more vitriolic than any in the preceding two decades. This period in the data, however, was trumped by the first year of the Abbott government. Along with this conclusion the data showed that the cause of the vitriol during this period could not be narrowed to one specific driver. It can be seen that issues such as the minority government, style of opposition, gender and even to a certain extent the speakership would have all contributed to any mutation of the tone of debate. ii Declaration I declare that this thesis contains only my original work towards my Masters of Arts (Research) except where due acknowledgement has been made in the text to other material used.
