LOVE of RELIGION, LOVE of NATION: Catholic Mission and the Idea of Indonesian Nationalism

In the context of colonialism, Christianity has surely been perceived as a foreign religion that poses a menace to native nationalism. This essay presents a different picture, taking the case of colonial Java (the Netherlands East Indies) to illustrate the complex historical relationship between Catholicism and Indonesian nationalism. Perhaps it is rather ironic that it was chiefly through their connection with the Dutch Church and their mission enterprise that the Javanese Catholic intelligentsia were made deeply aware of their own dignity as a particular people and the limitations of European colonialism. In this case, Catholic Christianity as a world religion with supranational connection and identity has been able to help the birth of an intense nationalism that was prevented from being too narrow, chauvinistic, or simply “racialist,” precisely because it is connected with its larger ecumenism or network. More specifically, this ecumenism is also founded on the idea of “catholicity,” that is, universalism, that lies at the heart of Catholic Christianity. In the post-colonial Indonesia, however, this Catholic view needs to be translated into common platforms with the views and concerns of Indonesian Muslims, who face the same new challenges as they play their role in the formation of an authentic Indonesian nationalism. -

It may be useful to give a short survey of such materials as have come to my notice, even though this survey is of necessity incomplete. First of all it should be mentioned that literary, cultural and scholarly journals and magazines have discovered modern Indonesian literature and regularly or incidentally publish translations of poetry, short stories, essays etc. The well-known journal INDONESIA, issued half-yearly by the Modern Indonesia Project of Cornell University, has published a number of Indonesian stories in English translation, for example Idrus' stories Fujinkai and Och... Och ... Och (vol. 2) and Surabaja (vol. 5), Ajip Rosidi's stories Among the Family (vol. 1) and A Japanese (vol. 6), while Heather Sutherland (vol. 6) and Harry Aveling (vol. 7) con- tributed essays on modern literature. Another magazine which deserves to be mentioned as an interesting effort to make available to a wider audience modern literary and other cultural products from Southeast Asia including Indonesia is TENGGARA (tenggara means Southeast). So far five issues have come out, .the latest one bearing the year 1969. Another volume, containing Southeast Asian plays, has been announced. Several short stories, poems and essays on Indonesian literature have been published so far. -

U n p a c k in g a N a t io n a l H e r o in e : T w o K a r t in is a n d T h e ir P e o p l e Danilyn Rutherford As Head of the Country, I deeply regret that among the people there are still those who doubt the heroism of Kartini___Haven't we already unanimously decided that Kartini is a National Heroine?1 On August 11,1986, as Dr. Frederick George Peter Jaquet cycled from Den Haag to his office in Leiden, no one would have guessed that he was transporting an Indonesian nation al treasure. The wooden box strapped to his bicycle looked perfectly ordinary. When he arrived at the Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde, the scholar opened the box to view the Institute's long-awaited prize: a cache of postcards, photographs, and scraps of letters sent by Raden Adjeng Kartini and her sisters to the family of Mr. J. H. Abendanon, the colonial official who was both her patron and publisher. From this box so grudgingly surrendered by Abendanon's family spilled new light on the life of this Javanese nobleman's daughter, new clues to the mystery of her struggle. Dr. Jaquet's discovery, glowingly reported in the Indonesian press, was but the latest episode in a long series of attempts to liberate Kartini from the boxes which have contained her. For decades, Indonesian and foreign scholars alike have sought to penetrate the veils obscuring the real Kartini in order to reach the core of a personality repressed by colonial officials, Dutch artists and intellectuals, the strictures of tradition, and the tragedy of her untimely death. -

A Desirable Leader: Reflection of the Populist Characteristics Jakarta: Mizan
AL ALBAB - Borneo Journal of Religious Studies (BJRS) Volume 2 Number 1 June 2013 A Desirable Leader: Reflection of the Populist Characteristics Jakarta: Mizan By S. B. Pramono & Dessy Harahap Reviewed By Amalia Irfani (Pontianak State College of Islamic Studies) There is no country that is successful in its management without intervention of a leader. The leader is the spearhead of the success of a country. The thought, effort, even the habit of the leader are capable of making people follow and treat them like an idol figure/a celebrity. A successful leader will always be honored while those who fail will usually be scorned and even removed. The book entitledPemimpin Yang Dirindukan: Refleksi Karakteristik Kerakyatan (A Desirable Leader: Reflection of the Populist Characteristics) written by S.B. Pramono and Dessy Harahap contains brief biographies of several Indonesian national leaders that have been under the spotlight both nationally and internationally. They were the forerunners of promoting diversity in Indonesia, and their existence won respect from other nations that saw Indonesia as a nation of dignity. There are thirteen (13) major figures who made Indonesia a great nation through their thoughts and services, namely: Sukarno, Mohammad Hatta, Sutan Syahrir, Muhammad Natsir, Haji Agus Salim, R.A. Kartini, Supomo, Muhammad Yamin, the Great Commander Sudirman, Ki Hajar Dewantara, Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX, Yap Thiam Hien, and Hoegeng. They were born to the nation, raised in a distinguished and educated family, and held prominent positions of their era. Being easy to read, straightforward and communicative makes this book so interesting and attractive that it should become a reference for the youth who have ‘intent’ to be a leader.
