It may be useful to give a short survey of such materials as have come to my notice, even though this survey is of necessity incomplete. First of all it should be mentioned that literary, cultural and scholarly journals and magazines have discovered modern Indonesian literature and regularly or incidentally publish translations of poetry, short stories, essays etc. The well-known journal INDONESIA, issued half-yearly by the Modern Indonesia Project of Cornell University, has published a number of Indonesian stories in English translation, for example Idrus' stories Fujinkai and Och... Och ... Och (vol. 2) and Surabaja (vol. 5), Ajip Rosidi's stories Among the Family (vol. 1) and A Japanese (vol. 6), while Heather Sutherland (vol. 6) and Harry Aveling (vol. 7) con- tributed essays on modern literature. Another magazine which deserves to be mentioned as an interesting effort to make available to a wider audience modern literary and other cultural products from Southeast Asia including Indonesia is TENGGARA (tenggara means Southeast). So far five issues have come out, .the latest one bearing the year 1969. Another volume, containing Southeast Asian plays, has been announced. Several short stories, poems and essays on Indonesian literature have been published so far.

U n p a c k in g a N a t io n a l H e r o in e : T w o K a r t in is a n d T h e ir P e o p l e Danilyn Rutherford As Head of the Country, I deeply regret that among the people there are still those who doubt the heroism of Kartini___Haven't we already unanimously decided that Kartini is a National Heroine?1 On August 11,1986, as Dr. Frederick George Peter Jaquet cycled from Den Haag to his office in Leiden, no one would have guessed that he was transporting an Indonesian nation al treasure. The wooden box strapped to his bicycle looked perfectly ordinary. When he arrived at the Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde, the scholar opened the box to view the Institute's long-awaited prize: a cache of postcards, photographs, and scraps of letters sent by Raden Adjeng Kartini and her sisters to the family of Mr. J. H. Abendanon, the colonial official who was both her patron and publisher. From this box so grudgingly surrendered by Abendanon's family spilled new light on the life of this Javanese nobleman's daughter, new clues to the mystery of her struggle. Dr. Jaquet's discovery, glowingly reported in the Indonesian press, was but the latest episode in a long series of attempts to liberate Kartini from the boxes which have contained her. For decades, Indonesian and foreign scholars alike have sought to penetrate the veils obscuring the real Kartini in order to reach the core of a personality repressed by colonial officials, Dutch artists and intellectuals, the strictures of tradition, and the tragedy of her untimely death.

AL ALBAB - Borneo Journal of Religious Studies (BJRS) Volume 2 Number 1 June 2013 A Desirable Leader: Reflection of the Populist Characteristics Jakarta: Mizan By S. B. Pramono & Dessy Harahap Reviewed By Amalia Irfani (Pontianak State College of Islamic Studies) There is no country that is successful in its management without intervention of a leader. The leader is the spearhead of the success of a country. The thought, effort, even the habit of the leader are capable of making people follow and treat them like an idol figure/a celebrity. A successful leader will always be honored while those who fail will usually be scorned and even removed. The book entitledPemimpin Yang Dirindukan: Refleksi Karakteristik Kerakyatan (A Desirable Leader: Reflection of the Populist Characteristics) written by S.B. Pramono and Dessy Harahap contains brief biographies of several Indonesian national leaders that have been under the spotlight both nationally and internationally. They were the forerunners of promoting diversity in Indonesia, and their existence won respect from other nations that saw Indonesia as a nation of dignity. There are thirteen (13) major figures who made Indonesia a great nation through their thoughts and services, namely: Sukarno, Mohammad Hatta, Sutan Syahrir, Muhammad Natsir, Haji Agus Salim, R.A. Kartini, Supomo, Muhammad Yamin, the Great Commander Sudirman, Ki Hajar Dewantara, Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX, Yap Thiam Hien, and Hoegeng. They were born to the nation, raised in a distinguished and educated family, and held prominent positions of their era. Being easy to read, straightforward and communicative makes this book so interesting and attractive that it should become a reference for the youth who have ‘intent’ to be a leader.

Indonesian Historiography in the New Order (274 pp.) Director of Thesis: William H. Frederick This thesis discusses one central problem: What happened to Indonesian historiography in the New Order (1966-98)? To analyze the problem, the author studies the connections between the major themes in his intellectual autobiography and those in the metahistory of the regime. Proceeding in chronological and thematic manner, the thesis comes in three parts. Part One presents the author’s intellectual autobiography, which illustrates how, as a member of the generation of people who grew up in the New Order, he came into contact with history. Part Two examines the genealogy of and the major issues at stake in the post-New Order controversy over the rectification of history. Part Three ends with several concluding observations. First, the historiographical engineering that the New Order committed was not effective. Second, the regime created the tools for people to criticize itself, which shows that it misunderstood its own society. Third, Indonesian contemporary culture is such that people abhor the idea that there is no single truth.

  • ASPECTS of INDONESIAN INTELLECTUAL LIFE in the 1930S
PUDJANGGA BARU: ASPECTS OF INDONESIAN INTELLECTUAL LIFE IN THE 1930s Heather Sutherland Pudjangga Baru, the "New Writer," was a cultural periodical put out in the colonial capital of Batavia by a group of young Indonesian intellectuals from 1933 until the invasion of the Netherlands Indies by Japan in 1942.1 In Bahasa Indonesia, the term pudjangga means "literary man, man of letters; author, poet; linguist, philologist."2 34 The choice of this term for the title of the monthly was no doubt also influenced by an awareness of its historical connotations, for the word can be traced back through such Old Javanese forms as bhujanga to an original Sanskrit root associated with sacred and priestly learning. It implied nobility and integrity as well as literary ability; and it is therefore no accident that the writings appearing in it claimed high idealism and a sense of mission. The purpose proclaimed by Pudjangga Baru became more fervent as the years passed. In the beginning, it described itself simply as a literary, artistic, and cultural monthly. At the start of its third year it declared itself a "bearer of a new spirit in literature, art, culture, and general social affairs."^ At the beginning of its fifth year it claimed to be the "leader of the new dynamic spirit to create a new culture, the culture of Indonesian unity."1* In 1928, when the second All-Indonesia Youth Congress swore the famous oath to work for "one fatherland, one people, and one language" Pudjangga Baru pledged itself to work for the development of the national language and also to strive for a national culture, adding "one culture" to its 1.
