BORGES’S MEDIEVAL IBERIA by Maria Ruhlmann A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Doctor in Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland March 1, 2017 © Maria Ruhlmann All Rights Reserved Abstract This dissertation examines how and why famed Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges conjures up images of Medieval Iberia in the vast majority of his anthologies of essays, poems and stories. Following an introduction to Borges’s attitude to the multiple and often contradictory appropriations of Medieval Iberia in the Spanish-speaking world of his day, it considers the philological and postcolonial implications of Borges’s references to al-Andalus and Sepharad. Relying on New Philology as defined by Karla Mallette and on postcolonial approaches to medievalisms of the postcolonial world, Borges’s Medieval Iberia offers a contribution to the mostly unchartered territory of critical approaches to the uses of medievalisms in twentieth- century Argentina. ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY Jewish Studies 2020 annual report about the cover In 2019, while taking REL/ JST 315: Hebrew Bible, with lecturer Timothy Langille— who teaches courses on the Hebrew Bible and Jewish history—Alison Sigala crafted a highly elaborate scroll with medieval-like art, which portrays the stories from the first two chapters of Ezekiel in the Hebrew Bible. According to Dr. Langille, it also relates to one of the units discussed in this class, “book cultures versus scroll cultures.” The work depicts the biblical scene of Ezekiel receiving a vision from G-d, who calls him to become a prophet. In this story, Ezekiel receives a scroll from G-d and then eats it. The following talk was given by George Critchlow on April 25, 2006 at Temple Beth Shalom in Spokane, Washington in honor of Yom Hashoah, the annual remembrance of the Holocaust. Critchlow, an associate pro- fessor at Gonzaga University School of Law and a founder and former director of the Gonzaga Institute for Action Against Hate, was selected by the congregation to represent the “righteous gentile.” Professor Critchlow would like to acknowledge the helpful ideas and background information presented at the Amnesty International USA Lawyers’ Conference at the University of Washington School of Law on February 17-18, 2006. In particular, he was inspired by John Shattuck’s presentation titled “The Legacy of Nuremberg: Confronting Genocide and Terrorism Through the Rule of Law.” I have enormous respect for Temple Beth Shalom, what it stands for, its congregation, and those individuals whom I have come to know and count as friends. I am deeply honored and privileged to be invited to speak to you on this Day of Remembrance–especially in light of the occasion to recognize the 60 years that have now passed since the establishment of a new rule of law and accountability regarding war crimes and crimes against humanity at the Nuremberg Military Tribunal in 1946. I have a poster hanging in my office that frequently catches my eye and reminds me to connect my heart with my head. It is a picture of a small child of uncertain ethnicity, running happily, arms out, into the smiling face and open arms of his mother. -

Paola Sartoretto | Voices from the margins | Sartoretto | Voices Paola Voices from the margins This study looks into communicative processes and media practices among members of a subaltern social movement. The aim is to gain an understanding 2015:32 of how these processes and practices contribute to symbolic cohesion in the movement, how they develop and are socialized into practices, and how these processes and practices help challenge hegemonic groups in society. These Voices from the margins questions are explored through a qualitative study, based on fieldwork and interviews, of a subaltern social movement. The empirical object of the study is People, media, and the struggle for land in Brazil the Brazilian Landless Workers Movement (MST), which was founded in 1984 to promote agrarian reform and defend the rights of rural workers in Brazil. The results show that communicative processes are crucial to reinforcing values and symbologies associated with the rural worker identity. There is also a high level of Paola Sartoretto reflexivity about media practices and an understanding that they must serve the principles of the collective. As a consequence, the movement seeks to maintain control over media, routinely discussing and evaluating the adoption and use of media. The interviews show ambivalence towards the alleged dialogic and organisational potential of digital media and to the adaptability of these media to the MST’s organisational processes. The school dismissed the teacher and had students study anti-Semitism in response Canada Montreal: A Jewish student at McGill University faced pressure to resign from her student government position for accepting Hillel Montreal’s invitation to travel to Israel and the West Bank. The Student Society of McGill University Board of Directors rejected the society’s legislative council’s motion calling for the student’s resignation. France Paris: An Israeli student was beaten unconscious on the subway for allegedly speaking Hebrew on his phone. Westhoffen: Over 100 graves were found covered with swastikas and anti-Semitic graffiti at a Jewish cemetery. Germany Berlin: A teenage student was allegedly strangled by three peers while they yelled anti-Semitic abuse at him. Ukraine 1 / 14 Kyiv: A statue of Sholem Aleichem, a leading Yiddish author and playwright was vandalized with swastikas. ADL commended the Ukrainian government’s immediate condemnation of the incident. United Kingdom London: A rabbi was hospitalized after reportedly being attacked over Shabbat by two teenagers who yelled “Kill Jews” and other anti-Semitic remarks. November Argentina Buenos Aires: A Swastika was painted in a bathroom stall at the Law School in Buenos Aires with the message, “Out with the Jews.” Canada Toronto: The University of Toronto Graduate Students’ Union apologized for linking positions on Israel to a Jewish student’s request to bring kosher food options to campus. -

Though relatively small communities, the Lebanese and Lebanese-Americans have had a disproportionately large impact on the landscape of the Twin Cities. This paper examines how Christian Lebanese communities in Northeast Minneapolis and the West Side of Saint Paul have used placemaking as a means to retain their cultural heritage, form an original Lebanese-American identity, and alternatively resist and embrace assimilation. -

Jackson School of International Studies ©Copyright 2021 Owen Harris University of Washington Abstract Hellenes and Arabs at Home and Abroad: Greek Orthodox Christians from Aleppo in Athens Owen Harris Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Kathie Friedman Jackson School of International Studies Abstract: In this thesis, I show how communities living together in relative equality in Aleppo, Syria, and fleeing the same conflict, experienced very different outcomes depending on which religious community they belonged to. Members of the Greek Orthodox Christian community from Aleppo who have moved to Athens reported that their new home is exactly the same as the community they left behind. Members of the Muslim community from Aleppo in Athens did not agree with this statement. Why do Greek Orthodox Christians fare so much better than their Muslim compatriots in Greece? I argue that this inequality is a result of opportunities and challenges created by policies instituted during the great unmixing of peoples in the early 20th century and the refugee crisis in the early 21st century. Greek Orthodox Christians are equal citizens in a secular Arab republic that values ecumenism and members of the Greek diaspora in a Hellenic republic that privileges Greek ethno-religious belonging. They are Arab Hellenes, equally Greek and Syrian. Drawing on data collected in interviews with members of the Greek Orthodox Syrian community in Greece, as well as Syrians of different faiths in other countries, I examine what went right for Greek Orthodox Syrians in Athens and suggest policy tools that government and civil society can use to create similar conditions for Muslim Syrians in Greece. -

Crusades 1 Crusades The Crusades were military campaigns sanctioned by the Latin Roman Catholic Church during the High Middle Ages through to the end of the Late Middle Ages. In 1095 Pope Urban II proclaimed the first crusade, with the stated goal of restoring Christian access to the holy places in and near Jerusalem. Many historians and some of those involved at the time, like Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, give equal precedence to other papal-sanctioned military campaigns undertaken for a variety of religious, economic, and political reasons, such as the Albigensian Crusade, the The Byzantine Empire and the Sultanate of Rûm before the First Crusade Aragonese Crusade, the Reconquista, and the Northern Crusades. Following the first crusade there was an intermittent 200-year struggle for control of the Holy Land, with six more major crusades and numerous minor ones. In 1291, the conflict ended in failure with the fall of the last Christian stronghold in the Holy Land at Acre, after which Roman Catholic Europe mounted no further coherent response in the east. Some historians see the Crusades as part of a purely defensive war against the expansion of Islam in the near east, some see them as part of long-running conflict at the frontiers of Europe and others see them as confident aggressive papal led expansion attempts by Western Christendom. The Byzantines, unable to recover territory lost during the initial Muslim conquests under the expansionist Rashidun and Umayyad caliphs in the Arab–Byzantine Wars and the Byzantine–Seljuq Wars which culminated in the loss of fertile farmlands and vast grazing areas of Anatolia in 1071, after a sound victory by the occupying armies of Seljuk Turks at the Battle of Manzikert.
