ABSTRACT

A new species of Planopilumnus Balss, 1933 (Planopilumnidae, Pseudozioidea) is described from Pakistan. The species can be distinguished from its only congener, P. spongiosus (Nobili, 1905) by its relatively broader and flatter carapace, different anterolateral armature and structure of the third maxilliped.

INTRODUCTION

The composition and systematic placement of the Indo-West Pacific Planopilumnus Balss, 1933 (type species Pilumnus spongiosus Nobili, 1905), has been problematic. The genus has been classified, transferred or associ- ated with many families and subfamilies, including the Xanthidae, Pilumnidae, Geryonidae, Goneplacidae and Pseudoziidae; with Serène (1984) establishing

(eds.), LIPKE BIJDELEY HOLTHUIS MEMORIAL VOLUME a new subfamily, Planopilumninae, in the Pilumnidae for the genus. Crosnier, in a footnote in Serène (1984), however, had commented that Planopilum- nus, with different male first gonopods, was aberrant in the Pilumnidae. Ng et al. (2008) reviewed the literature and decided to recognise the Planopilum- nidae Serène, 1984, as a distinct family in the superfamily Pseudozioidea Al- cock, 1898, with three genera: Planopilumnus Balss, 1933, and Platychelo- nion Crosnier & Guinot, 1969, and Haemocinus Ng, 2003. Ng et al. (2008), however, specifically excluded five species: Pilumnus vermiculatus A. Milne- Edwards, 1873, Pilumnus labyrinthicus Miers, 1884, Pilumnus penicillatus Gordon, 1930, Planopilumnus fuscus Balss, 1933, Planopilumnus minabensis Sakai, 1969, and Planopilumnus pygmaeus Takeda, 1977, from Planopilum- nus, arguing these species were pilumnids. Ng (2010) recently revised the of planopilumnids, and restricted Planopilumnus Balss, 1933, for only Planopilumnus spongiosus (Nobili, 1905), resurrected Rathbunaria Ward, 1933, as a valid genus with one species Planopilumnus orientalis (Balss, 1933) (= Rathbunaria sculptissima Ward, 1933), and established two new genera for the five pilumnid species. Specimens examined are deposited in the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Paris (MNHN); The Natural History Museum (NHM), London; Mu- seum für Naturkunde der Humboldt-Universität, Berlin (ZMB); and Zoolog- ical Reference Collection (ZRC) of the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Re- search, National University of Singapore. The abbreviations G1 and G2 are used for the male first and second gonopods, respectively. Measurements pro- vided, in millimeters, are of the carapace width and length, respectively.
