However, we went well beyond confirming our hypotheses, and this penultimate season has come close to completing our investigation of the three principle structures discovered so far: the winery, the slave barracks, and the church of S. Pietro in Villamagna. The Winery (fig.1) The 2009 Archaeological Campaign in the area of the winery has provided important information and new data in regards to both the Roman building and the post-Roman phases of the site, substantially confirming our interpretation in the previous reports. Under the ge- neral supervision of Andrea di Miceli and supervision of the trenches by Seth Bernard, Dirk Booms, Janine Young, Raffaele Laino, Ismini Milariesis, Candace Rice, and Darian Totten, no less than 6 trenches of varying size and depth were opened. Where appropriate, a bobcat helped remove the modern overburden. Fig. 1. This revealed few buildings, apart from a grid-shaped structure towards at the southwest corner, although the edges of a pond, later confirmed by local sources, are clear in the southeast corner of the field. Last year’s sites at the casale and the monastery were continued, while a new site (D) was opened to investigate the grid-shaped building. Interventions by Roberto Gabriele of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche include the creation of a Digital Elevation Model of the hill on which the villa was built (fig. 2), a resistivity survey of the casale, and splendid balloon photographs the final day of excavation (figs 14 and 15, below). Site A: The Casale The area excavated inside the courtyard of the Casale almost trebled in size, although we were unable to complete the excavation of the whole of the courtyard. Our interpretation of the northeastern room as a cella vinaria for the production and storage of wine during fermentation3 was confirmed in full by the investigation of all of the available area of the room.

    Michael Feige Decorative Features and Social Practices in Spaces for Agricultural Production in Roman Villas Abstract: This paper examines the use of decorative features in the context of wine and oil process- ing facilities in the villas of Roman Italy. To this purpose, the investigation analyses the interaction of decoration with the central productive installations, the spaces surrounding them and the villa building as a whole. This relationship between utilitarian facilities, decoration and architecture makes it possible to draw conclusions about the social practices associated with these facilities and the potential motivations of the actors involved in their construction and management. The forms of decoration employed range from wall paintings to the use of representative architectural forms and innovative designs. These various techniques could be utilised to arrange production rooms to facilitate ritual acts, to provide a space for aristocratic leisure, or to emphasise the care taken in the production processes. Other owners took the opposite approach, hiding production areas with representative façades to create the impression of a luxury estate. Introduction In the postmodern economic system of the western world, it is increasingly important for individu- als, but also for companies, corporations and other businesses, to be visible, to stand out and ‘make the difference’ with their own products and services1. To this end, the results and goods of work are increasingly designed with the recipient in mind, who needs to be addressed by their novelty and specificity and thus encouraged to consume them2. Within this consumer culture and its economic strategies, the aesthetic design of products or services and their affective-sensual experience by the customer gain immense importance3.

The most evident is the simple account of the discoveries of the most recent season. However, they are also useful for trying out ideas, summarizing the knowledge acquired to date, and playing with hypotheses. In the previous report this function was evident in our first attempt at the reconstruction of the cella-coenatio complex, which we envisioned as a covered banqueting hall. Al- though this reconstruction fit the evidence then available, this year’s excavations effectively debun- ked it, showing that the foundation was not con- tinuous all the way around the structure, and that we could therefore not expect the walls to bear such a significant load. Other objections had come from colleagues, complaining that the span was, in any case, too great for all but the most expensive timber the empire had to offer. The completion of the exca- vation of the courtyard of the casale and the test trench within the granary did offer new solutions to Fig. 1. Over June and July, the post-excavation research in the laboratory aimed to complete all the catalogues, with a view to comprehensive publication within a reasonable amount of time1. Site B (Mon)2 Last year’s excavations had completed the investigation of those portions of the monastery found within the confines of site B, as well as the majority of the tombs related to the monastic (10th-13th century) and later phases. We thus aimed at revealing the earlier levels through- out the site. Roman levels here were an extensive paving of white limestone partially revealed last year. This surface appears to be- long to a great court lying to the south of a large porticus duplex structure visible in the geophysical survey, a building which we assume to have been the imperial resi- dence, whose south facade is found just inside the north section of the trench, and can be traced through the width of the half of the trench (fig.

Monica Hellström This study traces the development of building inscriptions in Roman North Africa, in order to understand the rich epigraphic record testifying to public construction during the reign of Diocletian. Treating construction as a form of communication between builder and society, I have examined the claims made by the state as it took on the role of builder, and to what social groups these claims were directed. A wide approach has been called for to understand the role played by public construction – and by broadcasting it through inscriptions – for the negotiation of influence in the province. I have examined the activities of both imperial and local builders, which has revealed well defined conventions as to what and where to build, and how to communicate it. Against this backdrop, I have traced the relations of the Diocletianic government to a number of social strata, as expressed through building inscriptions, from rural entrepreneurs and small town councilors to Carthaginian senators.

    Excavations at Villa Magna 2006 Elizabeth Fentress, Caroline Goodson, Sophie Hay, Ann Kuttner, Marco Maiuro Villa Magna 2006 2 Excavations at Villa Magna 2006 Elizabeth Fentress, Caroline Goodson, Sophie Hay,Ann Kuttner, Marco Maiuro The first season’s excavation at Villa Magna achieved all of its aims: most importantly, it created a sound footing for what we hope will be a long-term project, setting the basis for a training excavation that will prepare students for the wide range of skills needed in modern archaeology, initiating the investigation of both the Roman villa and the monastery built over it, and covering over half of the area of the villa with a geophysical survey whose results give us an extraordinary preview of the structures we are studying. This report gives a brief overview of the significant results of the project, followed by a proposal for next year’s work. In appendix are found the detailed excavation reports from the two field supervisors, Caroline Goodson and Marco Maiuro. First, however, we should mention the high level of collaboration between international research institutions and local authorities which the project already represents. The University of Pennsylvania and the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, represented by our associate director Ann Kuttner, supported the project financially with a generous contribution from the 1984 Foundation and provided us with three graduate students from its archaeology program. The British School at Rome, represented by co-director Andrew Wallace-Hadrill, provided us with a team that carried out the geophysical investigation. They also provided us with a van and most of the tools necessary for the excavation.

The Geophysics Introduction The magnetometer survey conducted in 2006 at Villa Magna covered approximately 8.5 hectares. The survey covered three areas: around the church, inside the courtyard in the main casale, and the large field to the east of the casale. Overall, the results proved to be highly successful and provided a clear plan and layout of the villa and its surrounding buildings. In some areas the extent and limit of the villa complex was identified (fig. 1). Fig. 1.
