  • Vs AFC Wimbledon (Friendly) [24.7.2021]
DARTFORD 1 AFC WIMBLEDON 0 After registering a 3-1 victory over Carshalton Athletic FC in midweek, Dartford returned to hosting another League One side in their pre-season workouts. On this occasion, the visitors to Bericote Powerhouse Princes Park on a much cooler afternoon was Mark Robinson's AFC Wimbledon. Unlike the two previous encounters with League One opposition, the Darts secured a hard-fought victory courtesy of a superb George Porter strike in front of 868 supporters. With the visitors creating the bulk of goalscoring opportunities in a tight first forty-five, it was the hosts who went in at half-time with a 1-0 lead. The goal came in the 21st minute after good work from Steve King's side, which resulted in Noor Husin collecting the ball. He then sent a brilliant pass out wide to George Porter, who cut inside from the left-flank and sent a beautiful curling effort into the top corner. Besides the goal, the hosts found it difficult to break down a stubborn Wimbledon defence throughout the first-half. In fact, only Ade Azeez looked the most likely to do so before Porter's goal. The striker beat the defenders to get himself on the end of Connor Essam's pass in the fourth minute, only to be caught offside. Five minutes later saw him at it again, as he got through and looked odds-on to open the scoring. Unfortunately a superb, last-ditch tackle by Dan Csoka prevented Azeez from pulling the trigger. The only other meaningful opportunity for the hosts was created by Noor Husin as the game approached the 45th minute.

Media Reports In the early days of local football it took several years for the local newspapers to provide a separate ‘Football’ section. Reports of matches would often be found in the ‘General News’ section and later all sports were included under the heading ‘Past Times’, football being the poor relation, the striking feature being that cycling received many more column inches than football. Record Attendances The attendance of 41434 at Chelsea in the third round of the FA Cup on 6 January 2007 is the highest crowd the Silkmen have played in front of. The largest attendance for a match involving the Silkmen at the Moss Rose was 9003 on 14 February 1948 in the second round of the Cheshire Senior Cup against Winsford United who won 3-2.

MACCLESFIELD TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB Penalty Shoot-outs The first penalty shoot-out in an English professional match took place in 1970 at Boothferry Park, Hull between Hull City and Manchester United in the semi-final of the Watney Cup. The shoot-out was won by Manchester United with George Best the first to take a kick and Denis Law was the first player to miss. Since then the use of a penalty shoot-out has been extended widely to settle cup competition matches. Macclesfield Town successfully completed 10 consecutive penalty shoot-outs but their unbeaten record was broken on 4 December 2018 when they lost 3-5 to Newcastle United Under 21s in the Second Round of the Checkatrade Trophy. Since then they have won one and lost one. 25 Nov 1992 Chesterfield FA Cup – First Round replay 2-2 AET Won 3-2 on penalties Chesterfield Macclesfield Town Turnbull Mitchell Francis Bimson Shepherd (Penalty scorers) (Penalty scorers) Following a 0-0 draw at the Moss Rose on 14 November 1992 in front of a crowd of 3063, non-league Macclesfield Town travelled to EFL side Chesterfield on a wet Tuesday evening. • Macclesfield Town Football Club Return to the Non-League Scene Chapter
MACCLESFIELD TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB RETURN TO THE NON-LEAGUE SCENE CHAPTER TWO Season 2013-2014 JOHN’S IN CHARGE BY GEOFFREY KNIGHTS OVERVIEW The appointment of John Askey as manager with Efe Sodje as his assistant was warmly welcomed by the fans. John, who has made more appearances for the Silkmen than any other player, is held in very high esteem by the supporters and officials. Efe Sodje, another legend having scored the Silkmen’s first Football League goal, is well respected and has the ability to gain sponsorship deals. As a management team they worked wonders on a restricted budget reaching the third round of the FA Cup, with the team completing the season in a mid-table position in the Skrill Premier League. It was a contrasting scene off the field of play with a difficult financial position to be managed, possible takeover moves said to be in the pipeline throughout the season, outstanding debts and the Registrar turning aside the club’s application to convert to a Community Interest Club, all leading to a feeling of uncertainty for everyone connected to the club. On the positive side, owner Amar Alkadhi invested a further £50,000 during the season and the Cheshire East Council came to the rescue when they purchased the freehold of the Moss Rose providing a cash injection which helped to reduce the outstanding debt. As always, the main purpose of this chapter is to record the achievements of the football team, but a summary of the major off-field events is also included to provide as fuller a picture as possible.
