    D. D. KOSAMBI ON HISTORY AND SOCIETY PROBLEMS OF INTERPRETATION DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY UNIVERSITY OF BOMBAY, BOMBAY PREFACE Man is not an island entire unto himself nor can any discipline of the sciences or social sciences be said to be so - definitely not the discipline of history. Historical studies and works of historians have contributed greatly to the enrichment of scientific knowledge and temper, and the world of history has also grown with and profited from the writings in other branches of the social sciences and developments in scientific research. Though not a professional historian in the traditional sense, D. D. Kosambi cre- ated ripples in the so-called tranquil world of scholarship and left an everlasting impact on the craft of historians, both at the level of ideologi- cal position and that of the methodology of historical reconstruction. This aspect of D. D. Kosambi s contribution to the problems of historical interpretation has been the basis for the selection of these articles and for giving them the present grouping. There have been significant developments in the methodology and approaches to history, resulting in new perspectives and giving new meaning to history in the last four decades in India. Political history continued to dominate historical writings, though few significant works appeared on social history in the forties, such as Social and Rural Economy of North- ern India by A. N. Bose (1942-45); Studies in Indian Social Polity by B. N. Dutt (1944), and India from Primitive Communism to Slavery by S. A. Dange (1949). It was however with Kosambi’s An Introduction to the study of Indian History (1956), that historians focussed their attention more keenly on modes of production at a given level of development to understand the relations of production - economic, social and political.

  • Zonal Disaster Management Plan 2019
201920162018 FOREWORD I am happy to note that the Safety Department of Central Railway is bringing out a revised edition of the Zonal Disaster Management Plan of Central Railway for the year 2019. Earlier, a ‘Disaster’ on the Railway meant only a serious train accident. The situation has now changed with the promulgation of Disaster Management Act in the year 2005. Under this act, the word ‘Disaster’ includes natural calamities like earthquake, floods, etc., and also man- made disasters like terrorist acts through bomb blasts, chemical, nuclear and biological disasters. Basically, a ‘Disaster’ is a situation which is beyond the coping capacity of Railways and would require large scale assistance from other agencies. Arising out of DM Act, Government of India has formed a National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC). Thus, Central Management Groups (CMG’s) have been formed in each Ministry, including Railway Ministry, under NCMC. An Integrated Operation Centre (IOC) has been opened in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to handle disaster situation 24 x 7. All concerned Ministries/Departments/Organisations/Agencies will report events to IOC. This Zonal Disaster Management Plan includes brief particulars of these Committees/Groups. A new training methodology and schedule decided by the Board is also included in this Disaster Management plan which will be helpful to strengthen and revamp the Training on Disaster Management being imparted to several tiers of railway officials through Railway Training Institutes. This Plan provides for a structured means of response to any accident or calamity that involves the Railways and ensures that resources of State Administration, National Disaster Response Force and others quickly become available for deployment.

International Journal of Applied and Natural Sciences (IJANS) ISSN(P): 2319-4014; ISSN(E): 2319-4022 Vol. 6, Issue 5, Aug – Sep 2017; 45-50 © IASET DIVERSITY OF MACRO FUNGI AND MYXOMYCETES AT PALASDARI, MAHARASHTRA ANUBHA PATHAK & SHARDA VAIDYA P.G. Research Laboratory, Department of Botany, Smt. C.H.M. College, Ulhasnagar, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India ABSTRACT The authors present here the report of macro fungi and members of Myxomyecetes occurring at Palasdari. This is a small village and a common picnic spot. It is also a point of study tours of many school and college students, due to the presence of a forest and a waterfall. The present paper is a report of findings of lower plants, such as fungi along with the still less studied group, Myxomycetes. There are several reports of fungal biodiversity from different places of India, but there is no report about the Palasdari Flora. The fungal specimen observed were Psathyrella umbonata, Polyporus versicolor, Hypoxylon fragiforme, Auricularia auricula-judae, Marasmius rotula and the members of Myxomycetes were Physarum bogoriense, Physarum polycephalum. These specimens are economically valuable and possess medicinal value. Physarum polycephalum is used in many medical treatments and in the preparation of biological robot. Auricularia is important in the remedies of throat ailments. The human interference in these forests is increasing day by day. The construction work of new buildings and roads and carelessness of picnic goers are resulting in spoilage of vegetation. The present paper throws a light on the important and unseen treasures of nature, from this location that needs to be saved.

Pedestrian flow takes place in confined environment on stairways under the influence of composition, direction of movement, and schedule of trains. During peak-period, alighting and boarding rate is quite high resulting in very high pedestrian movement from one platform to the other to catch the next train at interchange stations. The transfer of passengers from railway platforms through common undivided stairways becomes difficult, uncomfortable, and unsafe at times when pedestrian flow reaches the capacity level. Understanding of criteria defining quality of flow that affect the effectiveness of facilities like stairways in handling the pedestrian traffic is vital for planning and designing of such facilities to ensure the desired level of service as well as safety in case ofemergency. The present paper is based on the study of pedestrian movement on stairways at busy suburban rail transit interchange station at Dadar in Mumbai, India.
