9 NEWS OF THE MOUNT BAKER COMMUNITY CLUB for Fall, 2018 NEWS OF THE MOUNT BAKER COMMUNITY CLUB for Fall, 2018 COURTLAND PLACE GARDEN UPDATE By Mary Scanlon

Lasagna gardening — I hadn’t encountered that term before. Te frst time I heard it was from my new neighbor, Merrill Berger. It refers to a method of destroying weeds and unwanted plants by layering the ground with newspaper or cardboard. Tis eventually smothers everything underneath, and afer a season the ground is ready for new planting. Tis was the frst plan of attack for the trafc circle on Courtland Place. I had frst noticed the trafc circle last year, when my husband and I moved in just across the way. At the time it was pretty unsightly, choked with weeds and scattered with construction debris and trash. I’m not a gardener, but I knew that a bit of urban rehabilitation was in order. I was thrilled to learn that Merrill — who had moved in at around the same time — was a master gardener. She led the way as we cleared the ground and replanted this spring. I’m originally from Arizona, so there was a learning curve for me. In Arizona the native plants are pretty hardy, and mostly do well without much intervention. Now I had to learn the discipline of regular watering and weeding (a work in pro- gress, I admit). My contribution was a ring of marigolds, and our neighbor Bri- an stepped in to repaint the surrounding curb. Now the trafc circle is a happier space of color and green. As I see it beginning to thrive, I’m starting to feel that I’m taking root here, too.
