The Cinema of Oliver Stone
Interviews Stone on Stone Between 2010 and 2014 we interviewed Oliver Stone on a number of occasions, either personally or in correspondence by email. He was always ready to engage with us, quite literally. Stone thrives on the cut- and- thrust of debate about his films, about himself and per- ceptions of him that have adorned media outlets around the world throughout his career – and, of course, about the state of America. What follows are transcripts from some of those interviews, with- out redaction. Stone is always at his most fascinating when a ques- tion leads him down a line of theory or thinking that can expound on almost any topic to do with his films, or with the issues in the world at large. Here, that line of thinking appears on the page as he spoke, and gives credence to the notion of a filmmaker who, whether loved or loathed, admired or admonished, is always ready to fight his corner and battle for what he believes is a worthwhile, even noble, cause. Oliver Stone’s career has been defined by battle and the will to overcome criticism and or adversity. The following reflections demonstrate why he remains the most talked about, and combative, filmmaker of his generation. Mancuso © 2018 Steven Robert Bellavia All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Schocket, Advisor This dissertation examines the experiences of the final Cold War generation. I define this cohort as a subset of Generation X born between 1965 and 1971. The primary focus of this dissertation is to study the ways this cohort interacted with the three messages found embedded within the Cold War us vs. them binary. These messages included an emphasis on American exceptionalism, a manufactured and heightened fear of World War III, as well as the othering of the Soviet Union and its people. I begin the dissertation in the 1970s, - during the period of détente- where I examine the cohort’s experiences in elementary school. There they learned who was important within the American mythos and the rituals associated with being an American. This is followed by an examination of 1976’s bicentennial celebration, which focuses on not only the planning for the celebration but also specific events designed to fulfill the two prime directives of the celebration. As the 1980s came around not only did the Cold War change but also the cohort entered high school. Within this stage of this cohorts education, where I focus on the textbooks used by the cohort and the ways these textbooks reinforced notions of patriotism and being an American citizen. -

Writers Guild Foundation Archive Biography/Administrative History Born July 18, 1914, Roy Huggins enjoyed a prolific career as a TV writer/producer, creating Maverick, 77 Sunset Strip, The Fugitive and co-creating The Rockford Files with Stephen J. Cannell. Later in his career, he often took writing credit under pseudonyms such as Thomas Fitzroy or John Thomas James. In 1994, he received the Golden Laurel Award from the Producers Guild of America. Huggins, who was married to actress Adele Mara, passed away April 3, 2002 and he is survived by his five children. Scope and Content of Collection The bulk of the collection consists of scripts from the shows Huggins created and/or wrote on including 77 Sunset Strip, Maverick, Blue Thunder, Bus Stop, Kraft Suspense Theater, Kraft Mystery Theater, Cheyenne, Rockford Files and Run For Your Life. -

Scott Looney “Just as truly as each individual has different physical characteristics, so truly does he possess individual and peculiar talents, wants, powers, tastes, instincts, and tendencies. And because of this there can be no real and efficient education where a general course of instruction and a general method of training is applied to a group of [students].” – James A. Hawken, 1915 At opening meetings in August, I gave each faculty and staff member a copy of author Todd Rose’s recent book, The End of Average: How We Succeed in a World That Values Sameness, because it resonates remarkably well not only with the direction we are heading, but with our founder James A. Hawken’s original commitment to individualized education. The concept of “the end of average,” while by some standards is not new, is groundbreaking when viewed in the context of today’s approach to education and the workplace. I highly recommend the book. This issue of the Review highlights one of the many ways Hawken is taking the lead in making learning more individualized and relevant: the Upper School Intensives. Now in their eighth year, the Intensive program has evolved to the point where it has become part of the natural rhythm of the school year. Its uniqueness and success has drawn over fifty schools from across the country to visit Hawken to see just how it is implemented, and many schools are adopting versions of it if not mimicking our approach to a tee. -
