Press Release No. 4 JACKY ICKX, MAURO FORGHIERI and the FERRARI 312 B to STAR at the MOTORLEGENDFESTIVAL Jacky PRESS RELEASE – Press release no. 4 JACKY ICKX, MAURO FORGHIERI and the FERRARI 312 B TO STAR AT THE MOTORLEGENDFESTIVAL Jacky Ickx and Mauro Forghieri will be two of the brightest stars at the first edition of the MotorLegendFestival, taking place from 20 to 22 April 2018 at the Enzo e Dino Ferrari Circuit in Imola. 8 March 2018. The great Belgian champion and the brilliant Italian designer will meet again, 45 years after their collaboration, which began in 1968 and ended in 1973 after a very successful run in Formula 1 and the world sportscar championship. For the six-time winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours, taking part in the 2018 MotorLegendFestival is also a chance to reacquaint himself with the Formula 1 Ferrari 312 B with which he came so close to the 1970 world title, winning the Austrian and Canadian Grand Prix and finishing second place overall that year. The single-seater, recently restored and in perfect working order, will be brought to Imola by Paolo Barilla, another winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours. His presence, along with many other important drivers, will add to the excitement of the weekend. On Sunday 22 April at the MotorLegendFestival, Jacky Ickx, who had his first taste of F1 success fifty years ago, winning the 1968 French Grand Prix at the wheel of the Ferrari 312 F1-68, will take part in a discussion with Mauro Forghieri. The pair will relive the feats of the 312 B, forefather to a generation that would propel the Ferrari 12-cylinder boxer engine to the top of world championships between 1970 and 1980. JACKY ICKX Belgian and the wonder boy of his generation, Ickx was the first European Formula 2 champion, winning the 1967 title at the wheel of the Matra. His journey with Ferrari began in 1968, when a very young Jacky won the French Grand Prix with the 312 F1-68, finishing fourth in the championship. The following year, he moved to Brabham and was declared vice-champion after victories in Germany and Canada. Returning to Maranello in 1970, he once again proved himself by powering the new-born 312 B to victory in Austria and Canada and securing the runner-up spot once again. In 1971, he won the Dutch Grand Prix before clocking up another victory in 1972, at the German GP at the Nurburgring, a track at which he was a master. His Ferrari adventure came to an end mid-way through the 1973 season but not before he helped consolidate the Prancing Horse’s presence in the world sportscar championship with the 312 P in 1972. Ickx has won the Le Mans 24 Hours on six occasions: the first in 1969 at the wheel of the Ford GT40; in 1975 ,1976 and 1977 with Mirage and Porsche and in 1981 and 1982 with the Porsche 956. He is considered the cross-discipline driver par excellence: he won the Paris- Dakar in 1983 with a Mercedes and was a frontrunner in the following editions of the African raid with the revolutionary Porsche 959. In total, he achieved 29 stage wins, which placed him third in the race’s special standings. Ickx took part in 116 Formula 1 Grand Prix, winning 8 and obtaining 13 pole positions and 14 fastest laps for a total of 181 points and 25 podiums. In 1982 and 1983 he won the world endurance drivers’ title with Porsche. MAURO FORGHIERI His career has shaped the history of motoring from the 60s to the modern day. The heart and soul of Ferrari, he is responsible for creating many of the Prancing Horse brand’s most significant race cars. From the 1963 156 F1 to the splendid 330 P4 prototype of 1967, from the 312 B to the 312 T series, from the hill-climbing 212 E to the PB, to the first supercharged single-seaters, Forghieri’s cars have seen Ferrari achieve 4 drivers’ world titles, 7 F1 manufacturers’ titles, 54 Grand Prix wins and 2 sport-prototype world manufacturers’ championships. A team player and not only a technical director, after leaving Ferrari, Mauro Forghieri became the godfather of the 12-cylinder Lamborghini engine and was responsible for the Lambo F.1. He went on to found Oral Engineering. PAOLO BARILLA In the second half of the 70s, he was one of the world’s leading kart drivers. He made his debut in the very first Formula Fiat Abarth season, in 1980, before moving to Formula 3 the following year, coming close to the Italian title and finishing third in the championship. After having competed in Formula 2, he became a frontrunner in the world endurance series, first with the Lancia LC2 and then with the Porsche 956 of team Joest, with which he scored the Le Mans 24 Hours win in 1985. He then raced in the European and Japanese Formula 3000 series. Becoming an official Toyota driver, he competed in the 1989 Group C championship together with Johnny Dumfries. He made his F1 debut that same year with Minardi, taking part in the Japanese Grand Prix. He stayed with the Italian team until the 1990 season. Pressing work commitments then took him in new directions but he never truly left the racing world, continuing to appear in various guises. TICKETS. Then, MG TC’s began arriving in the U.S. and a few people started to take notice. Among them was Fred Wacker, who purchased one of the first little British cars in early 1948. In May of that year, Fred and Bud Seaverns drove the MG to Indiana-polis for the 500. After the race they were caught in the usual traffic jam, and came across Bill Spear and Sam Bailey, a couple of New Yorkers, in a Bentley. A mutual interest in their respective cars led to introductions, and in due course Fred and Bud heard of the “Sports Car Club of America” for the first time. Ownership of a “sports car” was an SCCA membership requirement at that time. Since Fred qualified in that respect, Bill and Sam suggested he become a member of the Club. After joining, Fred discovered there was no Chicago Region.

Enjoy. – Ed. When Olivier Gendebien and I were assigned to drive the new Ferrari GTO at Sebring in 1962, we were somewhat offended. Stirling Moss, Innes Ireland, the Rodriguez brothers, and other drivers were in sports prototypes, aiming for an overall win, and we wondered if there was a conspiracy against us. "Why are we driving this damn coupe?" There was an excellent reason Olivier and I were in the GTO. The Manufacturers' World Championship for 1962 was based on points scored by Grand Touring cars. Sports cars were now called prototypes, and while Stirling, Innes, and the others were running for the glory of the overall win, we were chasing points for the championship ... and earned the maximum by winning the GT class and finishing 2nd overall. As it turned out, the GTO was a delight to drive. That's probably because the emphasis put on the GTs to win the championship meant there was extra effort put into this car, so the GTO was a giant step beyond the Grand Touring cars built up to that point.

    Vern Schuppan Born in Australia, Vern Schuppan won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1983 and was part of the Porsche works team until 1988. Full of hope and optimism, Vern Schuppan went to England in 1969 at the age of 26 to become a racing driver. In 1970, he visited the 1,000 kilometre race at Brands Hatch, where he admired the driving skills of Jo Siffert and Pedro Rodriguez in their Porsche 917. ‘Their performance in the rain was very impressive,’ noted Schuppan. ‘I wonder if I will ever drive a 917?’ In 1972, Schuppan joined John Wyer’s Gulf team, but he was already using the Mirage Ford at this point. It was not until 2012 that his great wish came true: as a 69-year-old racing veteran, Schuppan finally had the opportunity to drive a Porsche 917 at the Le Mans Classic. In the early years of his career, Schuppan competed in some Formula One races for smaller teams like BRM, Ensign, Embassy Hill and Surtees. In the United States, he came third in the Indianapolis 500 in 1981. In the same year, Porsche required him to race in Le Mans, where he took 12th place after some engine problems in the Porsche 936. Racing manager Peter Falk was looking for drivers ‘with brains’ for the new Group C and its fuel consumption regulations – men with a consistent and gentle style. Schuppan was one of those up for selection, and in 1982 he finished second at the side of Jochen Mass when the Porsche 956 made its debut at Le Mans.

Given the problems with the Goodyears, the new chassis was conceived around the dened characteristics of the Michelin radials. Other notable dierences between the T2 and the T3 were the completely new front suspension design and notably dierent upper body aero, which – in stark contrast to the T2 – sported a square-cut, predominantly at body top and engine cover, maximizing the air ow both over and under the centre pillar rear wing. Although not ready to be debuted until the third round of the championship at Kyalami in South Africa on 4th March, the T3 showed promising form during pre testing for the race.
