Select Terrestrial, Freshwater and Marine Conservation Targets/Biodiversity Elements/Features Across Multiple Biological and Spatial Scales
Standard 7: Select terrestrial, freshwater and marine conservation targets/biodiversity elements/features across multiple biological and spatial scales. [plan] Rationale It is necessary to define a subset of targets that best represent the biodiversity of an ecoregion to focus the assessment. Conservation targets should cover the suite of biological scales (species to communities, ecological systems and other targets), taxa, and ecological characteristics to adequately inform comprehensive biodiversity conservation. Targets should include coarse and fine filter targets. This includes using rare and endangered, wide ranging, migratory and keystone species, rare communities, and all ecological systems and/or ecosystem types, as well as additional targets that are useful in capturing the variety of biodiversity characteristics, scales and ecological processes. Recommended Products ,,,List, and attributes of fine-filter targets such as distribution (local, widespread), conservation status (threatened and endangered), endemic, wide-ranging, rare communities and coarse-filter targets (ecological systems and ecosystems) as well as other types of targets as appropriate. See the Ecoregional Assessment Data Standards 1.0 for required fields. Maps of occurrences of targets throughout the ecoregion. Description of data gaps for specific target groups and geographic areas. GUIDANCE A systematic approach to conservation planning demands that we be explicit about what features of biodiversity we are trying to conserve (Groves 2003). With the goal of conserving the biodiversity of an ecoregion, we need to define a subset of features to work with that will adequately capture that representation and variety. We refer to these features as conservation targets (Redford et al. 2003). Conservation targets are the species, communities, ecological systems 1 and surrogates that we focus our assessments on in order to capture the broad range of biodiversity as best we can. -

Benthic macrofaunal structure and secondary production in tropical estuaries on the Eastern Marine Ecoregion of Brazil Lorena B. Bissoli and Angelo F. Bernardino Grupo de Ecologia Bêntica, Department of Oceanography, Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, Vitoria, ES, Brazil ABSTRACT Tropical estuaries are highly productive and support diverse benthic assemblages within mangroves and tidal flats habitats. Determining differences and similarities of benthic assemblages within estuarine habitats and between regional ecosystems may provide scientific support for management of those ecosystems. Here we studied three tropical estuaries in the Eastern Marine Ecoregion of Brazil to assess the spatial variability of benthic assemblages from vegetated (mangroves) and unvegetated (tidal flats) habitats. A nested sampling design was used to determine spatial scales of variability in benthic macrofaunal density, biomass and secondary production. Habitat differences in benthic assemblage composition were evident, with mangrove forests being dominated by annelids (Oligochaeta and Capitellidae) whereas peracarid crustaceans were also abundant on tidal flats. Macrofaunal biomass, density and secondary production also differed between habitats and among estuaries. Those differences were related both to the composition of benthic assemblages and to random spatial variability, underscoring the importance of hierarchical sampling in estuarine ecological studies. E-mail: [email protected] SUMMARY: The feeding ecology of eight demersal elasmobranchs, three sharks (Etmopterus spinax, Scyliorhinus canicula and Galeus melastomus) and five batoids (Myliobatis aquila, Leucoraja naevus, Raja polystigma, R. miraletus and R. clavata), from the Balearic Sea (western Mediterranean) was analyzed. For each species, the diet and feeding habits were characterized by depth strata using quantitative indices such as diet overlap, diet breadth and prey diversity. Diet variation with size and depth were also tested for the most abundant species. For shelf-living species, natantian and reptantian crustaceans together with teleosts were the most important preys. On slope bottoms, euphausiids were the preferential prey for S. canicula and G. melastomus, while E. spinax fed mainly on cephalopods. The most specialist and generalist diet corresponded to G. melastomus living on the upper slope and S. canicula from the continental shelf, respectively. High overlap was found between all the skates on the continental shelf and the sympatric sharks S. canicula and G. melastomus on the slope. Significant overlap was also found between S. canicula and R. clavata on the continental shelf. Size was found to significantly affect the diet of S. canicula, G. melastomus and R. -

There are a variety of habitat types in a deep-sea hydrothermal field, e.g., active and inactive chimneys, iron-rich mats, venting fluid and hydrothermal plume. Numerous studies have shown the diversity and composition of prokaryotic communities in individual habitats. However, it is still unclear whether and how the characteristics of prokaryotic communities in their respective habitats are different. Previously, we reported 16S rRNA genes in a variety of habitats, i.e., hydrothermally active and inactive chimneys, iron-rich mats, a vent fluid, crustal fluids from boreholes, as well as ambient seawater in a back-arc basin hydrothermal field of the Southern Mariana Trough. Here we summarize the prokaryotic communities in the col- lected samples at higher taxonomic resolution (up to family level) using the detected 16S rRNA gene sequences and compare them using recently developed bioinformatics tools. The comparative analysis clearly highlights differences in prokaryotic communities among the habitat types on and below the seafloor in the Southern Mariana Trough. Furthermore, descriptions of cultured species and environmental clones close to the detected sequences provide valuable information for understanding of their distribution and potential of ecological roles in deep-sea hydrothermal fields. ISRS BRIEFING PAPER 1 MARINE PROTECTED AREAS (MPAS) IN MANAGEMENT 1 OF CORAL REEFS SYNOPSIS Marine protected areas (MPAs) may stop all extractive uses, protect particular species or locally prohibit specific kinds of fishing. These areas may be established for reasons of conservation, tourism or fisheries management. This briefing paper discusses the potential uses of MPAs, factors that have affected their success and the conditions under which they are likely to be effective. ¾ MPAs are often established as a conservation tool, allowing protection of species sensitive to fishing and thus preserving intact ecosystems, their processes and biodiversity and ultimately their resilience to perturbations. ¾ Increases in charismatic species such as large groupers in MPAs combined with the perception that the reefs there are relatively pristine mean that MPAs can play a significant role in tourism. ¾ By reducing fishing mortality, effective MPAs have positive effects locally on abundances, biomass, sizes and reproductive outputs of many exploitable site- attached reef species. ¾ Because high biomass of focal species is sought but this is quickly depleted and is slow to recover, poaching is a problem in most reef MPAs. ¾ Target-species ‘spillover’ into fishing areas is likely occurring close to the MPA boundaries and benefits will often be related to MPA size. Evidence for MPAs acting as a source of larval export remains weak. ¾ The science of MPAs is at an early stage of its development and MPAs will rarely suffice alone to address the main objectives of fisheries management; concomitant control of effort and other measures are needed to reduce fishery impacts, sustain yields or help stocks to recover. -

The study of the Portuguese marine ichthyofauna has a long historical tradition, rooted back in the 18th Century. Here we present an annotated checklist of the marine fishes from Portuguese waters, including the area encompassed by the proposed extension of the Portuguese continental shelf and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences.
