Ritz’s job as a ghostwriter molded his prime directive into becoming the voice of who he was writing about, rejecting the temptation to implant his/her own point of view into the story. Seeking an escape from death by boredom in advertising, Ritz began his 40-plus year journey as a writer and ghostwriter with a simple but seemingly impossibly goal: to be Ray Charles’ first biographer. What began with a 32-year-old husband and father of two’s plane ride from Dallas to Los Angeles to bang on Ray’s front door began an odyssey from which he never truly returned as the same man. The God Groove places Ritz in rooms with artists, musicians and academics who have shaped the last 50 years in American culture: the late Aretha Franklin, Blues legend Etta James, and the tortured genius of Marvin Gaye, for whom he writes the titles to the now- classic “Sexual Healing”, the first stone on the path to Ritz becoming a songwriter in his own right.     Dear Blues Friends, There's been considerable growth in the public's interest in “alternative” genres/styles of music (blues, folk, bluegrass, old-timey, ethnic/world, etc.). I’m not going to try to analyze the phenomena, but I rejoice in it. When the consumer demands variety, the wise shopkeeper responds. Besides playing and listening to the music, I enjoy reading biographies, autobiographies, various blues related historical material, and watching blues on video. I would like to see a bigger 'catalog,' variety, and selection of blues related books, literature, periodicals, and videos in the bookstores. I'm frequently asked, “What books can I read to learn more about the music and the people of the Blues?” That’s a tough question, as there are many hundreds of titles. I don't have time to read everything that's available. I enjoy reading, but I’m no book reviewer. The purpose of this blues related book and video list is to give folks a 'taste' of the broad variety of blues related books, literature, and video that are available. The list is not "complete," and it's always growing. Even though the list is quite long, please take your time looking it over. I'm pretty sure you'll see a number of titles and subjects that will pique your interest. In some cases, the list includes the author(s) name(s), publishing company name(s) and city. Though many of the books/videos are only listed by the title and author(s), with that basic information, all you have to do is walk into, or call, your local book store and ask if you can place an order.

His presence is so strong during the holidays for African Americans because he is one of the distinctive cultural markers of the season. The question at hand is why is he relegated to the Christmas season but what about the rest of the year. In 2010, National Public Radio (NPR) created the series 50 Great Voices as a way to expose NPR listeners to artists who were not at the forefront of public consciousness. On June 26, 2010 Donny Hathaway debuted as the “Neglected Heart of Soul” but does “neglected” hold up. I believe “neglected” becomes situational depending on who is doing the remembering. The objective of my dissertation is to locate Donny Hathaway as a central figure in 1970s Soul music, to understand his growing influence over contemporary artists, and his musical legacy. I used Stuart Hall’s “representation” as my overarching theoretical framework. I wanted a theory that would be fluid enough to be relevant in the different phases of Donny Hathaway’s musical career. By using representation I was able to identify and understand the musical influences on Donny Hathaway.

    (Cause) Freedom (Stands For) Freedom (Oh) Freedom (Yeah) Freedom! It’s one word, really, repeated four times with interjections, echoed by a choir of women. But oh, how Aretha Franklin sang the bejesus out of the bridge to her 1968 hit “Think.” She built the stairway to the song’s climactic crescendo step-by-step. The first “freedom” is a statement, a tonic note, posed. The Queen of Soul takes the delivery up a notch on the second “freedom,” raising the scale and the stakes. She pitches a half step up on the third line, holding the note perilously, like a proposition or a promise. And then she lets that great big voice of hers loose, returning to the tonic but lifted an octave higher. That fourth “freedom” is a shout, a declaration, a testimonial, an exaltation. It’s everything that needs to be said, the word made an exclamation point in a way that only a woman born into the church and nursed by gospel could deliver it. “FREEDOM!” And then she repeats the whole thing one more time, for good measure. Contextually, this proclamation is a bit of a non sequitur — an abstract step away from the command tense of the rest of the song, in which Franklin tells her man what he needs to do to keep their relationship together: namely, “think.” “Think” has rightly been interpreted as one of the artist’s definitive feminist anthems. Ironically, her husband and manager Ted White, whom she later accused of abuse, is credited as a co-writer, but the singer’s sister Carolyn has said the song was all hers.
