Get Ready for School! Summer Mathematics Activities 2018 Entering Grade 5

Dear Guardian and Student,

Just like reading, regular practice over the summer with math will help your child prepare for entering the next grade. Please use the math activity list to have fun talking and doing mathematics together! Remember to always ask your child, “How did you figure it out?”

To use the math activity list: o This summer try to complete the number of activities recommended for your grade level. o When you do one, cross it off. Write down on the log on the back of this sheet which activity you did. o Bring the log back to your new teacher in September for a school reward and a chance to be selected to attend a fall televised school committee meeting for a “Spotlight on Excellence!” o When you see this symbol, choose 1 or more activities from page 2. o Some helpful materials to have around: • A folder for these papers • Blank paper • A pencil • A deck of playing cards with the kings, queens, and jacks taken out • A pair of • Crayons • Coins

Have a great summer vacation!

Sincerely,

Robin Desmond Assistant Superintendent Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment Office

4. Do a counting activity or :

Multiplication Compare – Deal all the card out. Put the set of cards facedown. Both players turn over the top two cards and multiply them to find the product. The player with the larger product gets all four cards. If they are the same number both players turn over another set of cards and the larger product takes all. The game is over when there are no more cards to turn over. Whoever has the most cards, wins. (Like “War” but with multiplying two cards.)

Close to 100 – (Use the cards, but take the 10s out, too.) Deal 6 cards to each player. Place them face up in front of you. Make two 2-digit numbers. Add them together. Your score is your distance from 100. The person with the lowest score wins, so you want to be close to 100! Ex. You turn over the following cards 5, 4, 9, ACE, 7and 3. You make two numbers: 47 and 53. They add up to 100! Your score would be zero. Close to 1000 – Like Close to 100, but deal 8 cards to each player and make two 3-digit numbers that add up to be as close to 1000 as possible.

Play a board game such as: Checkers, Memory, jigsaw puzzles, , , Yahtzee, Racko, , Chess…..
