September Intermissions Moments

We had a special remembrance program on September 11th. Even though it has been 17 years, many of us remembered that tragic day with much clarity. We talked about our feelings that day and all that has happened in the years since. In recent years, this day has become a day of service to others. We watched some videos about some of the ways that people are helping others and talked about ways in which we can help serve others. We ended the program, not with tears, but with pride for our country and hope that future generations will continue to serve others.

Have you ever been to the Maryland Renaissance Festival? It’s located in Crownsville, Maryland and takes place from late August to mid-October. I love going to the festival every year and I thought I would make a slideshow presentation to share with the group. Starting with the opening ceremony, I walked the group through the gates and showed them pictures of the costumes, crafts and cuisine that make this festival one to remember. We even watched a video of one of the aerial performers and marveled at her strength and agility. Our group enjoyed this program and loved seeing the pictures of all the festival has to offer. Maureen’s Moment

I come from a large extended family. My mother was the youngest of 10 and I am the youngest of 5. For the better part of my life, I lived within walking distance of grandparents, aunts and uncles and many cousins. I loved the planned family parties and the spur of the moment gatherings which always included the adults sharing stories about “the olden days”. I guess I was getting free training for my ultimate career! Every day at Intermissions, we engage in activities that “take me back”. I am sure that you remember playing board with your family and friends. I grew up with Monopoly, and . Our group plays a game similar to scrabble, called . It has become a new favorite. I like it because the letter tiles are bigger so it is easier to see. Also, the “board” is slightly raised plastic which rotates so one can move the board closer without disrupting the letter tiles. This is great for people with vision issues. It is also easy to modify the rules wherein it becomes more of a fun, working-together activity versus “who gets the most points”. In this high tech world, I find “back to basics” games a great way to spend quality time with friends and family. I encourage you to give Upwords a try. Invite a young person to play and introduce them to some “techless” fun! October Calendar
