Case Study Transbase CD Customer Viessmann Heating Systems CASE STUDY Viessmann Spare Parts Catalog on CD-ROM guarantees best maintenance and service The Viessmann Group is a leading international producer of high-quality, advanced-technology heating products such as wall-mounted heating appli- ances, oil and gas central heating boilers, thermal storage heaters, and solar heating systems. Product sales, consulting, installation, and customer service are carried out by specialized retailers. Viessmann sends approximately 18,000 CD-ROMs per year to retailers, with detailed information on spare parts. Viessmann decided to put its spare parts catalog on CD-ROM because this medium has multiple advantages over traditional paper catalogs. For example, it meets the requi- rements for multiple languages, variances, and data that have resulted from internationalization and shorter product cycles. Overview Viessmann chose Attensity Europe GmbH and its partner, Munich-based Transaction Software GmbH, a technology leader in retrieval database Industry: systems, to design, develop, and publish the CD. The CD catalog application provides country-specific pricing information. This is vital for Viessmann, a global company with offices in Germany and 33 other countries. The database is updated between CD-ROM publication dates to ensure that the information is always up to date. Attensity Europe GmbH prepares the data for the electronic spare parts cata- log (ETK), updating and coordinating the spare parts data and associated image files. The data provided by Viessmann is prepared, checked, and loaded into the database in a multi-step process. New image files are converted and item numbers are included in the images. The data for the Transbase® database are also used to update the spare parts catalog on the web (iETK). This web application is identical to the CD catalog application, and enables a user, e.g. a specialized heating equipment retailer, to search for and order spare parts directly on the internet. For years, both grid and cloud computing have distributed data across machines and even clusters at different geographic locations (sites). However not all sites need all of the data in a particular data set, or have the (perhaps specialized) processing capabilities required. These facts chal- lenge the conventional wisdom that we should always move the computation to the data rather than the data to the computation. Sometimes the data actually required is small. In other cases, the site with specialized processing capabilities (such as a GPU equipped cluster) cannot handle the demands placed on it unless a way is found to let that cluster select the data that is actually needed, even if it is not stored locally. In general, the multidimensional data model is used in these applications, realized as star or snow-flake schemata in the relational world. The so-called star queries are the prevalent type of queries on such schemata. All database vendors have extended their products to support star queries efficiently. However, mostly reporting queries benefit from the optimizations, like pre-aggregation, while ad-hoc queries usually lack efficient support. We present the DBMS Transbase® in this paper, which provides a new physical organization of the data based on hierarchical clustering and multidimensional clustering combined with multidimensional indexing. In combination with new query optimizations (e.g., hierarchical pre-grouping) significant performance improvements are achieved. The paper describes how the new technology is implemented in the Transbase® product and how it is made available to the user as transparently as possible.
