I am married, with one son. Current position: Professor Emeritus of Social Medicine – Health Planning, Faculty of Medicine, University of Crete, Greece. Studies : I studied Medicine at King’s College Hospital Medical School, University of London (1968-1973). I obtained a Ph.D. from the Medical School, University of Athens in 1978 (Thesis title: “Medicine in Greece after its entry into the European Economic Community”) and the M.Sc. in Community Medicine from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London (1980-1981). I have the title of Specialist in Internal Medicine in Greece (1979) and I am a Member of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom (1980). Awards : I am an Associate of King’s College (1973). I have received the Barry Prize (1969), the Warneford Scholarship (1969-1973) and the Bodossakis Foundation Scholarship (1980-1981). I have received Honorary Awards from the Hellenic Association of General Practice (ELEGEIA, 2002), from the Faculty of Public Health of the Medical University of Sofia (2007), from the Hellenic Union of General Practitioners (2010) and from the Hellenic Association of Nurses (2017). I served as Vice -Rector of the University of Crete from March 2010 to August 2011 (Infrastructures & Student Affairs) and from October 2015 to February 2016 (Academic Affairs & Personnel). Clinical Positions: From 1973 to 1979, I trained in internal medicine in the UK and Greece. In 1980, I served as Locum Lecturer/ Honorary Senior Registrar in Medicine at King’s College Hospital Medical School, University of London. Health Care Policy and Planning: In 1979, I joined the Health Planning Group at the Ministry of Social Services and in 1982 I was adviser of the Governor of IKA, the Social Security Organisation of Greece. From 1982-1985 I served on the Executive Committee of the Central Health Council, at the Ministry of Health of Greece, where I participated in the planning, preparation and first implementation of the National Health System, focusing particularly on Primary Health Care (Health Centres and General Practice), Mental Health, medical staffing of hospitals and medical specialities. Positions at the University of Crete: From 1985-2016 I served as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor of Social Medicine - Health Planning. I was Head of the Health Planning Unit of the University Hospital of Heraklion in 1988-2016, Head of the Clinic of Preventive Medicine and Nutrition in 2009-2016 and Head of other Clinics and Units of the Department of Social Medicine at various times. I have repeatedly served as Chair of the Department of Social Medicine, both of the Faculty of Medicine and of the University Hospital of Heraklion. 1 During the first 10 years (1986-1996) of the Faculty, I was Chair of the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, having responsibility for organising the curriculum, for the study regulations and for drafting a new curriculum which was implemented from 1996-1997 onward. I have served as a Deputy Chair (2007- 2009) and Chair (2009-2011) of the Faculty’s Committee for Postgraduate Studies. I have served as member of several committees of the Faculty of Medicine and of the University Hospital, including the Committee for Internal Evaluation of the Faculty, the Scientific Council of the Hospital and the Quality Assurance Committee of the University. In 2007-2010, I served on the University Senate, representing the members of the Faculty of Medicine. I have been a member of several committees and faculty selection boards of other
