LMA/4524/B/03/003 Correspondence with Honorary Treasurer Nigel 1959 Robson relating to a proposal by the trustees of the Bedford Settled Estates to evict the Settlement and develop the site. The freehold of the Settlement buildings was vested in the Trustees of the Settled Estates in 1896, however, the Duke of Bedford, a supporter of the Settlement, purchased the freehold from the Trustees to ensure that low rents could be charged. In 1940 the Settlement's interest in these leases was purchased by the Settled Land Act Trustees prior to the Settlement moving to Canonbury. A low rent was agreed until the move would take place, however, it was cancelled after the Second World War. By 1960 the Settled Land Act Trustees decided that they could no longer charge such a low rent and wished to develop the site. This file comprises correspondence relating to their proposals and the reaction of the Settlement. 1 file

LMA/4524/B/03/004 Correspondence with estate agent Bernard 1959 Allen relating to a proposal by the trustees of the Bedford Settled Estates to evict the Settlement and develop the site. 1 file LONDON METROPOLITAN ARCHIVES Page 19 MARY WARD SETTLEMENT

LMA/4524/G/01/001 Manuscript notes discussing the relationship undated [1892 between the Warden and the Residents. -1897?] The notes appear to have been written to be read out at a meeting. A list of attendees is written on one side of the notes. They relate to some controversy or disagreement between the Warden and the Residents and discusses 'what the relations between any Warden and any Residents ought to be' and 'what the relations between you and me actually are'. The writer refers to the 'Hall' which may imply this document refers to Marchmont Hall rather than the Settlement; which would date it to 1892 -1897. The Wardens at this date were the Reverend P Wicksteed (1890-1893) followed by John Russell (1893-1897). 1 envelope Former reference: 80

LMA/4524/N/02/006 Letters to Dorothy Ward from her sister Janet 1953 Trevelyan relating to Coram's Fields and the Harmsworth Memorial Playground. The letters relate to the refusal of Lord Rothermere to allow the London County Council to take over the running of the playground. "Lord Rothermere" referred to here is probably Esmond Cecil Harmsworth, second Viscount Rothermere, (1898–1978), newspaper proprietor. The "Harmsworth Memorial Playground" was established by his father Harold Sidney Harmsworth, first Viscount Rothermere, (1868–1940), as a memorial to his two sons (Esmond's elder brothers) who were both killed in the First World War. 1 envelope LONDON METROPOLITAN ARCHIVES Page 88 MARY WARD SETTLEMENT
