Jubilee Digest Briefing Note for Cartmel and Furness
Furness Peninsula Department of History, Lancaster University Victoria County History: Cumbria Project ‘Jubilee Digests’ Briefing Note for Furness Peninsula In celebration of the Diamond Jubilee in 2012, the Queen has decided to re-dedicate the VCH. To mark this occasion, we aim to have produced a set of historical data for every community in Cumbria by the end of 2012. These summaries, which we are calling ‘Jubilee Digests’, will be posted on the Cumbria County History Trust’s website where they will form an important resource as a quick reference guide for all interested in the county’s history. We hope that all VCH volunteers will wish to get involved and to contribute to this. What we need volunteers to do is gather a set of historical facts for each of the places for which separate VCH articles will eventually be written: that’s around 315 parishes/townships in Cumberland and Westmorland, a further 30 in Furness and Cartmel, together with three more for Sedbergh, Garsdale and Dent. The data included in the digests, which will be essential to writing future VCH parish/township articles, will be gathered from a limited set of specified sources. In this way, the Digests will build on the substantial progress volunteers have already made during 2011 in gathering specific information about institutions in parishes and townships throughout Cumberland and Westmorland. As with all VCH work, high standards of accuracy and systematic research are vital. Cautley, K.C.B., in the chair, it was resolved to record the great loss sustained by Science in the early death of the late Dr. Hugh Falconer, and to perpetuate his name as a Naturalist and a Scholar by a suitable Memorial. It was unani- mously resolved that this Memorial should include a Marble Bust, to be placed in the rooms of one of the Scientific Societies, or else- where, in London, as might be determined. One of the objects in which the late Dr. Falconer took deep interest, up to the latest hour of Iiis life, was the foundation of Fellowships or Scholarships in the University of Edinburgh, to enable deserving students to prolong their studies beyond the usual academical period. It was therefore further resolved to collect funds for the purpose of founding, in that University, a Fellowship or Scholarship in Natural Science, tenable for a limited term of years, and to be called ' The Falconer Fellow- ship ' or ' Scholarship.' The Presidents of the Royal, Linnean, Geological, Geographical, and Ethnological Societies, and many other friends and admirers of Dr. Falconer, have formed a Committee for promoting the objects of the ' Falconer Memorial.' THE LATE EARTHQUAKE IN THE NORTH OP ENGLAND.—On Wednesday, the 15th of January, an earthquake of very unusual severity occurred in Morecambe Bay, and the neighbouring district of Furness. -

We, the Local Government Boundary Commission for England, having carried out our initial review of the electoral arrangements for South Lakeland district in accordance with the requirements of Section 63 of, and Schedule 9'to, the Local Government Act 1972, present our proposals for the future electoral arrangements for that district. 2. In accordance with the procedure laid down in Section 60(1) and (2) of the T972 Act, notice was given on 19 August 1974 that we were to undertake this review. This was incorporated in a consultation letter addressed to the South Lakeland District Council, copies of which were circulated to Cumbria County Council, parish councils and parish meetings in the district, the Members of Parliament for the constituencies concerned and the headquarters of the main political parties. Copies were also sent to the editors of local newspapers circulating in the area and of the local government press. Notices inserted in the local press announced the start of the review and invited comments from members of the public and from interested bodies. -

Office for Nuclear Regulation EXECUTIVE SUMMARY ONR’s statutory determination of the off-site emergency planning and public information areas for Barrow in accordance with the requirements of the Radiation (Emergency Preparedness and Public Information) Regulations 2001 (REPPIR) regulations 9 and 16 This Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) Project Assessment Report (PAR) describes and explains the basis for ONR’s re-determination of the Radiation (Emergency Preparedness and Public Information) Regulations (REPPIR) off-site emergency planning area and the area within which prior information is to be distributed around the Barrow GB nuclear site and nuclear warship site. The determination of a REPPIR off-site emergency planning area defines the area around a site within which, in the opinion of ONR, any member of the public is likely to be affected by a reasonably foreseeable radiation emergency (as defined in REPPIR), and constitutes an important component of the UK’s overall emergency response framework. In relation to this area, the local authority is required to prepare an adequate off-site emergency plan with the purpose of minimising, so far as is reasonably practicable, radiation exposures to those likely to be affected by such an emergency. -

When John first asked for Catherine’s hand Thomas Philipps told John that, as the Philipps’ had a long and honourable lineage he would need to check the Carlisle’s. The Philipps origins were auspicious - on his father's side he was descended from the chieftains of one of the lost tribes of the ancient Welsh house of Cilsant. In the collection of Thomas Philipps’ letters [1] Philipps describes the moment when John Carlisle’s bona fides arrived from England. “Carlisle received the long wished for letters .... he wrote to me enclosing his letters, begging to know if he could see me.” The news was good, almost too good. Thomas Philipps discovered that the Carlisles were a very ancient family indeed, descending from Sir Hildred de Carliell, the first Sheriff of Cumberland in 1154, living in Kirkbampton just west of Carlisle. -

169 THE BAPTISTS AND THE CUMBRIAN RELIGIOUS CENSUSES The following paper deals with the Baptists in the modern county of cumbria, that is since 1974 the former counties of Cumber land and Westmorland, the district known as Lancashire North-of-the-Sands which is cut off from the rest of the parent county by Morecambe Bay, and a small part of the West Riding of Yorkshire (principally Sedbergh and Dent) which comprised a salient into Westmorland on a level with Kendal. Until 1856 the northern half of Cumbria was under the Diocese of Carlisle, last bastion against the Presbyterian Scots, the southern half under the vast rambling Diocese of Chester, with that most reluctantly Cumbrian area known as Alston Moor in the far east under Durham and later Newcastle. The 1856 formation of the new Diocese of Carlisle brought a religious unity (Alston apart) which was not reflected in administrative circles for one hun dred and eighteen years, Cumbria being the most north-westerly English county containing within it the Lake District in the centre (roughly half a.million acres) but the outer ring of coast; .dale and moorland amounting to well over twice this amount. In a county not famed for the numbers of religious adherents and where the Established Church ~ailed to make a significant impression, it was not surprising that the Baptists remained one of the smallest of the Dissenting denominations in Cumbria. The great success of the Quakers in parts of Cumbria during the later 17th century was a response on the part of the iso lated and stubbornly independent countrymen to a sect fostering their indifference to Church authority (itself a response to Anglican neglect) and determination to ignore secular govern ment. -

COUNTY COUNCIL LOCAL COMMITTEE FOR BARROW Meeting date: 7th November 2012 From: The Chief Executive RURAL PROJECTS UPDATE 1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 1.1 This report gives details of the work programme being undertaken by the Rural Projects Officer. 1.2 The Rural Projects Officer works in Dalton North and Dalton South Wards in Barrow-in-Furness delivering a work programme determined by the Rural Joint Committee. The Rural Joint Committee comprises members and officers from Barrow Borough Council, Cumbria County Council and members of the Parish Councils. 1.3 The Rural Projects Officer’s post is funded by Cumbria County Council, Barrow Borough Council, Dalton with Newton Town Council and Askam and Ireleth Parish Council. Cumbria County Council is the employing authority. 2.0 STRATEGIC PLANNING AND EQUALITY IMPLICATIONS 2.1 This project supports the delivery of the Community Plan by developing “community capacity through thriving parish councils, supporting parish charters and community plans” 2.2 In supporting the rural community and developing their voice this project will ensure that Councillors and colleagues will have “better intelligence on local views, concerns and wishes.” 2.3 This project supports the aims of the Council Plan; Better council services connected to people and places, Wealthier – a sustainable and prosperous community, Healthier - Improving the health and well being of adults, Safer – stronger and inclusive communities, Greener – world class environmental quality and effective connections between people. In particular the project aims to support: “Enhance opportunities for people and communities to influence decisions and services.” 2.4 All projects will be assessed to ensure that the equality and diversity impacts are addressed.
