2020 EDITORIAL

Dear reader,

Welcome to the first edition of Kingspan MEATCA News, a brand new magazine that celebrates the growing success of Kingspan Insulated Panels in the Middle East, Africa, Turkey and Central Asia. As the global leader in high-performance insulation and building envelope solutions, Kingspan boasts over 12,000 employees across more than 70 countries worldwide, including dedicated teams in the Middle East, Africa, Turkey and Central Asia. These teams are truly multicultural in nature, with employees from a variety of backgrounds working together to deliver some of the most cutting-edge, awe-inspiring projects using Kingspan products.

We highlight some of these exceptional projects in the MEATCA region through intriguing articles, interviews with sector professionals, case studies and relevant product information from the Kingspan range.

In our first issue, we highlight some of these exceptional projects in the MEATCA region through intriguing articles, interviews with sector professionals, case studies and relevant product information from the Kingspan range. By sharing these success stories, we hope to increase communication across the different teams of Kingspan Group – as well as provide a source of inspiration for potential clients looking to partner with Kingspan on their next project.

The theme of our first issue is sustainability, a concept that is becoming ever more important in shaping architecture, design and the built environment. Powered by its vision to lead the way in creating energy-efficient buildings, in 2011, Kingspan Group embarked on its own initiative, committing to ensure that all of its facilities worldwide are Net-Zero Energy on an aggregate basis by the year 2020. You can read some of the concrete steps we’ve taken to meet our goal in the following pages.

As this is our first issue, we greatly value your feedback. We hope you enjoy Kingspan MEATCA News; we look forward to delivering engaging content for our readers as we continue to grow our influence in the region.

Sincerely,

Exploring Artificial Intelligence Integration with BIM

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is defined as ‘intelligence demonstrated by machines, in Using AI to improve the BIM process offers up many opportunities for the contrast to the natural intelligence (NI) displayed by humans and other animals’3. construction sector. From the earliest conceptual design to routine construction Although the term has specific connotations and definitions in the field of computer practices, facility management to the end of life of a building, these two emerging science, most of us understand AI to mean something akin to machines imitating technologies could be utilised together to leverage the effectiveness of the ‘cognitive’ functions we tend to associate with the human mind, such as learning construction sector. This collaboration could also provide solutions for major and problem solving. problems facing the sector, such as waste, pollution, high energy consumption, high cost due to weak planning, coordination problems that cause rework as well as deep leaming human mistakes. machine learning predictive analytics translation One example of integrating robotics into the BIM process is the series of studies classification & clustering natural language 5 processing (NLP) conducted by Gramazio Kohler Research on using quadcopters for construction . In information extraction one experiment, the rotorcraft was successfully able to assemble a six-metre-high speech to text speech Artificial Intelligence model by laying 1500 foam bricks in a twisting pattern. Once the quadcopter picks speech to text (AI) up the brick, it receives the exact coordinates for where it should be placed from a expert systems motion capture system mounted to the ceiling of the room. The quadcopter can lay planing, scheduling & optimization about 100 bricks per hour, and can be used to easily install space frame elements, robotics even at high altitudes. image recognition vision machine vision Another example comes from the Swedish construction company Skanska, who adopted BIM technology a long time ago and has recently incorporated robot Figure 8 What’s required for a machine to be intelligent6 technology in its construction processes. These days, Skanska is using drilling robots that derive their accuracy from a BIM model. In tests, a drilling robot mounted Today, AI is a part of our daily lives in one form or another, most notably in our on a mobile elevated work platform was 2.5 times faster than a comparable crew smartphones, which allow us to do just about anything from offering the shortest performing the same work via traditional means5. route to work based on our daily commute or simply obtaining information from our calendar for an upcoming appointment. Search engines and web browsers are getting more intelligent each day, collecting data from our search history and activities on Figure 9 Sun study with Ecotect social media to analyse our habits and likes, which enables companies to target us with marketing about things that draw our interest.

AI is also increasingly present in the field of architecture, and has been used by construction professionals for some time. One such example is the site analysis software depthmapX, which uses AI to analyse the spatial network on many levels4. The software significantly cuts down on the amount of time it would take an architect to solve the spatial relations – a process that would normally take days – as well as eliminating the need for him or her to make visits to the site. Architects can also perform any building and environmental analysis by simulating the environment via softwares that utilise AI, such as Ecotect, Ecodesigner and many open-source plugins Figure 10 Structural analysis in Revit for Revit and Sketchup.

In the field of demolition engineering, a software can predict and visualise the building collapse depending on the location of the explosive. It does this by extracting accurate Figure 12 Quadcopter Figure 13 Drilling robot data about the structure of the building to predict possible collapse scenarios.

AI is also prevalent in the photogrammetry field, where scanners capable of detecting hard surfaces and distances based on signal beams are used extensively in the Sources: 1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Building_information_modeling construction sector.
