March 2019 Tickton Advent Windows 2018 Volume 31 Number 1 February 2019 – March 2019 Tickton Advent Windows 2018... There were thirty-three families, organisations and outlets that took part in the Tickton Village Advent Windows this year. The standard of window was very impressive. This was a fun event where families could decorate the Advent Window together, with one or two windows being opened each day during the Advent season in a real community event. Many families also obtained an Advent Window Map, for a donation to the Beverley Foodbank, and walked around the village with the challenge to find all of the windows on display. The scheme raised a fantastic £176 for the Beverley Foodbank. Thanks should be given to everyone who took part either, in making the windows, or those who contributed by taking part in the “hunt”. The various outlets and organisations that distributed the maps should also be acknowledged; Tickton Store, Tickton Pre-School & Play Pals, Tickton School, Lilly’s Hair Studio, Springdale Farm Shop & the Hydrotherapy Unit (Unit A Key Park – Weel Road). Special thanks goes to Helen Turner, who co-ordinated everything. Unfortunately, only a few windows can be shown here, but well done to everyone. FIR TREES HAVE AN EVENTFUL YEAR... At Fir Trees Nursery School, we have had another year of fantastic fundraising and activities in the wider community. We raised over £1,000 towards an operation which will enable one of our children to walk unaided. We raised £600 for Children in Need and Red Nose Day. Some children created amazing works of art which were displayed in the Gallery at SALT Architects, Beverley. During the Christmas Term our Children created wonderful pictures to decorate the Children’s Ward in Hull Royal. Our setting continues to develop and we now have a fabulous room for our children aged 18 months upwards to explore before moving up into the pre- school rooms. We are looking forward to lots of new adventures in 2019. VILLAGE COFFEE MORNINGS S.I. FASHION SHOW RE-LAUNCH... This is a staged project and East Riding of Yorkshire Council has awarded a restricted grant of £4,000 towards Stage 1. The level of affordable housing is very low and there is no land allocated for housing within Tickton, this is typical of many village locations. Tickton & Routh Parish Council have set up a Working Group to complete Stage 1 of this project. A questionnaire is currently being prepared which will be delivered to every household within the Parish. Your responses will help to identify the need, type and size of housing built in future years. An Open Session will be arranged early 2019 for residents to discuss this project and ask any questions. The results of the Stage 1 consultation will be delivered at the Annual Parish Meeting on Monday 20th May 2019 in the Main Hall at the Village Hall. Stage 2 and 3 of the Community Led Housing Project is funded separately and must be undertaken by a constituted group. The thesis examines the evidence for later Iron Age and Romano-British settlement in a landscape block of £. 330 km , incorporating the valley proper and the higher glacial deposits at its margins. The discussion utilises a comprehensive and critical gazetteer of some two hundred and twenty sites and findspots, and seven detailed site-studies present the results of the author's fieldwork or analysis of previously unpublished material assemblages.

  • Papers of Colonel Rupert Alec-Smith and Family of Winestead Page 1 of 53
Hull History Centre: Papers of Colonel Rupert Alec-Smith and Family of Winestead U DAS Papers of Colonel Rupert Alec-Smith 14th cent.-1983 and Family of Winestead Accession number: 1977/07; 2005/16; 2012/27 Biographical Background: Rupert Alexander Alec-Smith was born at Elloughton, near Kingston upon Hull, in 1913. He was the grandson of Alexander Smith, a founding partner of Horsley Smith and Company, a timber importing firm whose small collection of papers dating from 1864 to 1968 is also held at the Hull University Archives (U DHS; see separate entry). Rupert Alec-Smith's parents were Alexander Alec-Smith and Adelaide Horsley. Rupert Alec-Smith was a man with an abiding interest in local and family history and he spent his life fighting to preserve both. In 1936, the demolition of the Georgian Red Hall in Winestead (originally built by the Hildyard family) left a profound impression on him and he founded the Georgian Society for East Yorkshire in 1937 (papers for Lord Derwent and the society are at U DAS/24/13; see also U DX99). He served with the Green Howards during the war and was in Cyprus and the Middle East making the rank of lieutenant colonel by 1944. On leave during the war he rescued fittings from the Georgian residences of Hull's old High Street as this was almost entirely destroyed by German bombs. After the war the Council showed no desire to restore what was left and Alec-Smith continued to salvage what he could from buildings as they were demolished (The Georgian Society for East Yorkshire).
