Tickton Advent Windows 2018...

There were thirty-three families, organisations and outlets that took part in the Village Advent Windows this year. The standard of window was very impressive. This was a fun event where families could decorate the Advent Window together, with one or two windows being opened each day during the Advent season in a real community event.

Many families also obtained an Advent Window Map, for a donation to the Foodbank, and walked around the village with the challenge to find all of the windows on display. The scheme raised a fantastic £176 for the Beverley Foodbank. Thanks should be given to everyone who took part either, in making the windows, or those who contributed by taking part in the “hunt”. The various outlets and organisations that distributed the maps should also be acknowledged; Tickton Store, Tickton Pre-School & Play Pals, Tickton School, Lilly’s Hair Studio, Springdale Farm Shop & the Hydrotherapy Unit (Unit A Key Park – Road). Special thanks goes to Helen Turner, who co-ordinated everything. Unfortunately, only a few windows can be shown here, but well done to everyone.

FIR TREES HAVE AN EVENTFUL YEAR...

At Fir Trees Nursery School, we have had another year of fantastic fundraising and activities in the wider community.

We raised over £1,000 towards an operation which will enable one of our children to walk unaided.

We raised £600 for Children in Need and Red Nose Day.

Some children created amazing works of art which were displayed in the Gallery at SALT Architects, Beverley.

During the Christmas Term our Children created wonderful pictures to decorate the Children’s Ward in Hull Royal.

Our setting continues to develop and we now have a fabulous room for our children aged 18 months upwards to explore before moving up into the pre- school rooms.

We are looking forward to lots of new adventures in 2019.

TICKTON & ROUTH COMMUNITY LED HOUSING…

The Parish Council is working with East Riding of Council and & Wolds Rural Action to investigate the current and future housing needs of our community. This is a staged project and Council has awarded a restricted grant of £4,000 towards Stage 1.

The level of affordable housing is very low and there is no land allocated for housing within Tickton, this is typical of many village locations.

Tickton & Routh Parish Council have set up a Working Group to complete Stage 1 of this project. A questionnaire is currently being prepared which will be delivered to every household within the Parish. Your responses will help to identify the need, type and size of housing built in future years. An Open Session will be arranged early 2019 for residents to discuss this project and ask any questions.

The results of the Stage 1 consultation will be delivered at the Annual Parish Meeting on Monday 20th May 2019 in the Main Hall at the Village Hall.

Stage 2 and 3 of the Community Led Housing Project is funded separately and must be undertaken by a constituted group.

CHURCH NEWS AND CHRISTMAS EVENTS...

The... Christmas Show on December 1st was called “The Good, the Bad and the Donkey”. A cast of twenty or so youngsters kept us well entertained as the ‘angels’ out-smarted ‘the devils’ and brought about the successful arrival of the baby Jesus, attended by all the expected characters in the nativity story. Great fun was had by all and well done to the cast and the producers, led by Pauline and Sarah. As is customary, in the second half of the evening the capacity audience joined in with carol singing, with our Methodist Minister Peter Clark as MC.

Just over a fortnight later, the Village Hall was again full for the carol singing evening which it was hoped would replace that which previously took place at the New Inn. There was a 5-piece band providing the backing and this time the Vicar, Jonathan Baker, held the reins. It seems the evening was much enjoyed by all and it will certainly take its place in the village calendar, in fact this year’s is booked for December 16th! People also gave generously and we raised enough money to pay for the hire of the hall and send £275 to Action for Children, the charity we previously supported via the New Inn carols. Thanks Nicky and Tony for having the idea of moving to the Village Hall and for their organisation of the event. Also, over the Christmas period, the following sums were raised for various charities in Tickton;  Christingle: £101 (for the Children’s Society)  Crisis: £122.10 (retiring collections, including the Y3 school service)  Andhra Pradesh: £120 (pledged giving)  Beverley Food Bank: £176 (via Advent Windows) Thank you to everyone who gave to any of these charities.

Calendar: Lent and Easter Lent begins on Wednesday March 6th; pancake, Shrove Tuesday, is the day before. During the season of Lent, which lasts until Holy Week, which is April 14th to 21st this year, St Paul’s church will be open during the daytime for anyone to enjoy a ‘quiet place’. We did this last year at Lent, and then again during December for Advent, and we know that some people value this opportunity. Please feel free to make use of the building, open from th nd March 6 to April 22 . Page-7 Details of our Easter service will appear in the next edition of Tickton Diary.

THOUGHTS FROM THE MANSE…

“It is with the heart one sees rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” Antoine de St Exupery

My Dear Friends, ENOUGH!

I started writing this letter on the third Monday in January, which is known as the darkest day of the year, not in terms of daylight hours but in terms of mood. It is the day by which most people who have made New Year’s resolutions have given up on them. I think the abandoning of resolutions happens because we put on ourselves onerous burdens and set ourselves unattainable goals. This got me to thinking about the why’s and wherefore’s of the exercise and what would constitute a worthwhile resolution. I suppose it would be possible to become deeply philosophical about the whole matter, but quite simply put, surely wanting to do and be better is an essential part of being. Isn’t this sentiment the very essence of the spiritual journey and the basis of genuine prayer? I think it is! How sad though that we are tempted to turn such a worthy exercise into something negative. Making resolutions is surely one of drawing out rather than one of forcing down; a sort of an RSVP to the invitation to Life.

The Dalai Lama has a list which he calls his “Instructions for Life”. They provided a pretty useful guide for resolution-making:

• Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk. • When you lose, don't lose the lesson. • Follow the three R’s: Respect for self. Respect for others. Responsibility for all your actions. • Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck. • Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly. • Don't let a little dispute injure a great friendship. • When you realise you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it. • Spend some time alone every day. • Open your arms to change, but don't let go of your values. • Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer. • Live a good, honourable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll be able to enjoy it a second time. • A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life. • In disagreements with loved ones deal only with the current situation. Don't bring up the past. • Be gentle with the earth. • Once a year, go somewhere you have not been before. • Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other. • Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it. • Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon. • There is no other person on this planet exactly like you.

Challenging, but positively so.

I close with a blessing. Some years ago, I was introduced to the blessing “I wish you enough,” via a programme on blessings in Something Understood on BBC Four. What better wish could we have than that for 2019; a blessing of enough? In a world of extremes; of grinding, soul destroying shortage and of smothering, soul destroying excesses, enough is indeed a blessing.

May we be blessed with Enough!

An announcement: with a view to contributing to the community of Tickton, the Tickton Church is recommencing regular coffee mornings weekly on Thursdays in the Methodist Chapel on 28 February. (See the details elsewhere in the Diary).

S ANTA’S COFFEE M ORNING & GOODBYE TO JOHN & ANNE...

Liz Hallett would like to thank everyone who supported the Coffee morning and Santa's grotto in the village hall on Saturday 8th December, when we said good bye to John and Anne Greenwood, who will shortly be leaving Tickton post office and convenience store after over 21years. The event raised £901.76 for local Soroptimist charities.

In the last two years we have supported the urology Macmillan nurses at Castle hill hospital, Yorkshire cancer which funds research into a variety of cancers, the Da Vinci robot at Castle Hill which is used to operate on people from all over East Yorkshire with inaccessible tumours, Beverley guide dogs and the Social group for people with Learning disabilities which meets at Millers in Beverley every Thursday evening, Our main charity this year is East riding sight support(formerly HERIB).

Thank you to everyone who supported this event, especially Rotary International of Beverley, who were able to persuade Santa to join us, the Fitta fingers group who helped with the grotto, to everyone who donated raffle and tombola prizes, helped on the day, baked cakes or just came along. We gave John and Anne a wonderful send off and lots of people came along at 12.30 for the presentation.

The collection for John and Anne, totalled £690 01. We gave them this in cash so that they could buy themselves something to remember us all by. I know you will all join me in wishing them a long, happy and healthy retirement.

Thank you to Clare and everyone at Springdale Butchers and Mandy and staff at Lilly'sH airdressers for all their help with the collection and also to you all for your generosity. T ICKTON Y OUTH CLUB...

HULL BRIDGE MEMORIAL STONES...

Tickton & Routh Parish Council have liaised with East Riding of Yorkshire Council to replace two engraved stones on …Hull Bridge as they could no longer be repaired. The new stones have now been carved and placed back into the footbridge by a local Stone Mason, W.P. Everingham & Sons Ltd, to preserve this small but interesting piece of local history.

The original stone (show above) depicts the cost of the toll to cross the bridge ‘Each vessel before passing this bring to pay One Shilling’ has been cleaned and kindly given safe refuge in All Saints Church, Routh.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR…

In the Summer of 1985 our village had no shop. I applied to run a post office and was accepted, initially operating from the hallway in my home whilst we renovated a farm building. When the premises were ready, we moved in and started selling a few essential groceries from a table. We bought back the news business from the Beverley supplier that had taken it on when the village lost the previous shop. The business grew, so we added some shelving, built the extension and applied for an alcohol licence (there was plenty of opposition for that). When I became unwell in 1997 and had major surgery, I found the business a struggle and Mr Greenwood took over. My husband and I put in a lot of hard work getting the business established, so contrary to a few of the villager’s notions, we would not like to see our village shop close.

I don’t want to mention any names, as I’m afraid I might miss someone out, but I was assisted by some lovely staff, both in the shop and the Post Office. I also had very helpful and friendly paper boys and girls.

A New Year brings new promise. With the finishing touches Wonderful feasting to our Farmstead (the Old Chauffeur’s Garage, Fold Yard with slow roasts or and Stable Bar) drawing to a conclusion we feel that a sense grazing boards in of new life has, like magic, been sprinkled over Tickton the Old Chauffeur’s Grange. This year is our 40th anniversary. Forty years since Garage & BBQ’s in our parents bought Tickton Grange. Full of excitement and the Fold Yard anticipation about bringing this beautiful Georgian house cooked by our back to its former glory and starting a new chapter in our chefs on our family own family’s life for generations to come, we all have our own of big green eggs

personal memories of the first time we were brought here. Now, we are adding to our footprint. The main Business at house is looking beautiful (well we think it is...) and we are really excited with our new Farmstead. It has a Tickton Grange different feel; Country, relaxed, sharing, family, but we haven’t forgotten the style and quality which we hope are our trademark.

The Old Chauffeur’s Garage was originally built in the early 1900’s to house the Harrison Broadley’s two (yes, two!) Lagondas, AT1 and AT2. We think they may have been the first registered cars in East Yorkshire. Now, with a log burner, beautifully restored windows, doors, beams and brickwork, the old bell which used to call the estate workers for their meals and long rows of tables, this lovely building shouts feasting and fun. Picture the scene, tables burgeoning with slow roasts and salads, posh cakes and ice creams, family, friends, laughter...Or perhaps you fancy grazing boards lining the central length of the tables. Cold meats, charcuterie, seafood, salads, herbs, leaves and so on. Help yourselves. A delight to the eye and a treat to the tastebuds.

The Fold Yard and Stables, home to ponies when we arrived, are also ready for the ‘off’. With hay bale seating and spliced hardwood table tops this wonderfully atmospheric space is perfect for our chefs to cook slow roasts and barbecues on our family of big green eggs. You can, of course, have cakes, tarts and ice creams to round off your celebration and even posh hot chocolate with squirty cream and marshmallows under the stars if that We have always enjoyed is your dream. Tickton Women’s Institute... Hello Ladies It’s nearly Valentine’s Day and Christmas is just a memory now. The gifts have all been played with or eaten, worn, drunk, stashed away in a safe place, or are making our lives a little better in some way or another, but have any of them given you a new interest or new friends? If not, perhaps you could give yourself the special gift of a year with the WI. Our visitor fee is only £3, which would be deducted from your annual subscription if you decided to join. Bring along your own special skills and interests whatever they may be, and enjoy the company and familiarity of your friends and neighbours in the village; you’d be very welcome. Our January meeting with the Burns touch will have been and gone by the time you read this, but on February 18th Claire Norman from Springdale Farm Shop will be talking sausages and then in March (18th) we could be painting rocks to conceal around the village, as well as learning about how the East Riding Theatre came about, and perhaps about its backstage secrets. A group of our theatregoers enjoyed “Goodnight Mr Tom” over the Christmas period and others are looking forward to a Godber Company performance of “I Want That Hair” in March at ERT. We love going to the Tickton Players Community Pantomime too and never miss the opportunity join in the fun and laughter that brings to the village. If you’d like to know more about the WI, not just in Tickton but in the surrounding villages (we belong to a Group of WIs including Leven, Leconfield, Long Riston, and Beverley) the Federation Office at 2B Railway Street in Beverley is open every Tuesday and Wednesday 10am to 3pm for a friendly chat and loads of information about the various events and activities on offer. G L CULLINGTON FIELD – SPORT AND RECREATION DEVELOPMENT...

Grant Funding secured through the Routh Wind Farm Community Fund and East Riding of Yorkshire Council Sports Development Fund has enabled the Parish Council to respond to public consultation providing additional sport and recreational facilities on GL Cullington Field.

The double court Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) upgraded late in 2017 now provides netball, tennis and 5 A-side football.

The single court MUGA basketball and 5 A-side football provisions – using parish council funds, this court was enclosed with vandal proof fencing earlier this year to provide users additional safety from vehicles in the car park area. New fencing and steel gates have been erected to the boundary of the play area.

MUGA fencing has been erected north of the double court MUGA together with combination football and rugby posts.

This additional equipment provides a range of sporting activities for our community.

TICKTON SCHOOL – GETS INTO THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT...

YR welcomed Jesus with a birthday party that was full of happy smiling faces and lots of songs. While Y1 & Y2 looked at the nativity from the point of view of the stable boy and his friend Shrew in ‘Prickly Hay’. They were joined by a wide cast of characters and quite a few unexpected guests! The children had a brilliant time performing their plays to our wonderful audiences.

IT ’S A TOUGH LIFE - LEARNING ABOUT THE VICTORIANS...

On the first week back after Christmas we dressed up as Victorians to learn about life as a Victorian.

In school we found the teacher was very strict and very mean, handing out punishments such as holding a penny against the board using your nose, a dunce’s hat, writing lines and the worst one which was the cane!

We had to write in cursive script and always use our right hand or we were punished.

Our favourite bits were the activities, such as learning about Queen Victoria, playing marbles, making flip books and high tea.

We are looking forward to finding out about all of the nasty diseases that they had in Victorian times, the different servants in a household and different jobs down in the mine.

Victorian Week At the start of this term all of Key stage 2 dressed up as Victorians to start our new topic, some were dressed up as maids or chimney sweeps and others were dressed as rich people. On the first day we learnt about children’s jobs and what it was like at Victorian schools. There were gruesome and unpleasant jobs like sewage tosher, leech collecting and rat caching. On the second day we learnt about the inventions, some of the inventions were flushing toilets, the first telephone and light bulb. We learned about Queen Victoria and it turned out that Queen Victoria wore black for 40 years after Prince Albert died. We also acted out Queen Victoria’s marriage. We all had lots of fun and can’t wait until we learn more! By Tallulah and Lilly – Y4
