DECEMBER 15, 2020 LEADERSHIP ADVISE FROM ONE WOMAN TO ANOTHER WHAT DID 2020 TEACH YOU DO WOMEN HINDER THE PROGRESS OF OTHER WOMEN ISSN 2091208-0 9 772091 20800999 The things we do, the lives we lead, the hopes we nurture, and the paths we take… a new year is a good time to reflect on our personal journeys, our moments of happiness, achievements, grief, loss… and to learn from it all to become a better person. In the past year, I have learnt that most of us are tougher than we think. We took on the uncertainties of the pandemic and learnt to adapt and change. It was not easy for many of us. I personally struggled with my freedoms being curtailed: having to wear a mask, being unable to move and travel at leisure, having to find new structures to work within, building resilience, protecting our vulnerabilities, understanding the fragility of life, and in it all finding the heart to be accepting, courageous and grateful. I had to learn to slow down and appreciate the little things that I was often taking for granted: a hot meal, meaningful conversations with family, sitting under the sun, meditating under an open sky, connecting with my son miles and miles away, playing with the dog. The rhythm of life took on a much richer meaning. These were things I did before but somehow now they felt more enriching. Many of us have been spared the pain of losing someone we love, but there are so many who could not even say a proper good bye. My heart goes out to them in prayer and healing. Death is inevitable for all of us. It is the only truth. Yet we rarely think about it or talk about it. This year has brought us up close with this certainty in very real way. And I feel strongly that every one of us must work on our spiritual selves to understand and accept that this body is only a tool with which we experience this world and it is important that we honour it. It is also important that we understand our impermanence and make space within ourselves for the eventuality of life ending. This year was an important lesson also in the inter-connectedness of our existence which allows us in very tangible ways to understand and empathise with each other. We don’t need to do big things, we can do small, little every day things to make life better on the planet for all living beings. Random acts of kindness, conscious living, practicing minimalism, giving with an open heart and mind, speaking and acting with awareness, being proactive citizens, paying attention: it is possible for every person, and it does make a difference. As we enter 2021, I wish you all good health, healing and fulfillment. At WOW, we will continue to bring you stories of women and men who inspire us, along with thoughts and opinions that offer us different perspectives on how we view life. charu chadha editor 56 December 2020 32 DESIGNS ON YOU Of Silk & Salt 42 WOW PEOPLE Leadership Advise From One Woman To Another 58 COVER GIRL Made For The Light December 2020 14 SNAP SHOTS 78 WOW GUEST COLUMN Celebrating Motherhood Sharing Might Not Always Mean Caring 16 WHAT YOU THINK 80 MORE THAN SKIN DEEP 32 What did 2020 teach you? Compiled by: Anushka Shrestha wow photo file © Ram Tandukar, Gokul Shrees 16 WOW December 2020 www.wowmagnepal.com RUMEE SINGH Founder, Hamro Life Bank & Katha4Nepal 2020 was a myriad of emotions - from fear, helplessness, anger and grief to resilience, acceptance and hope. 2020 challenged our creativity to take different shapes as we pivoted our business models and birthed more meaningful ways to engage professionally and personally. This passing year has taught me so much more than the lessons learned in my lifetime. I now have a deeper sense of appreciation for the roof over my head, a hug, a full meal a day, a beautiful blue sky, clean fresh air, the patience of teachers, the innocence of kids, the selflessness of health workers, technology that still keeps us connected with our loved ones and above all the faith and hope of communities rising together for a better tomorrow. From donating blood to sharing meals with folks who need them, 2020 has reaffirmed my belief that no matter what the situation is the only thing that ever remains constant is the joy of giving. www.wowmagnepal.com WOW December 2020 17 what you think SANNA GURUNG Blogger 2020 taught me to slow down and to appreciate the little things in life. It taught me the happiness in cooking and spending time with family, playing board games and relaxing. 2020 lockdown also taught me to really appreciate nature since we were indoors mostly I realised how much I missed going out not just for entertainment purposes but also the beauty in everything. And also how important it is to be a part of nature. Further, I learned to not rush through what society perceives as success or accomplishments but to prioritise your inner self because at the end of the day that matters more. Luckily, for me 2020 is also the year of my first born so it will forever be very special to me. 18 WOW December 2020 www.wowmagnepal.com ZENITH DHAUBHADEL Managing Director, Sierra 2020 was a rough year indeed, especially for our hospitality industry. Who would have thought a two week lockdown would end up being six months. Covid has taught me a lot both on personal and professional grounds. Hospitality being my primary field, this has been the most challenging year in my career and fighting for survival with revenues almost next to zero. One of my key learnings from the pandemic is adaptability. We have made plans of action accordingly which I would like to call. The 3R Plan: rethink, re-strategise and reboot. To be able to adapt to the situation, we had to go back to the drawing boards and rethink on all our plans such as taking a different approach on asset management, on generating alternate revenue streams or risk management which weren’t taken into consideration before. We have re-strategised on how we shall implement our reshaped plans which will help us revive and ultimately thrive in the market. Finally, reboot or restart all our operations with new mindset which we have slowly started with our F&B outlets. For instance, we have re-launched Sierra Restaurant in Lazimpat with a new menu, started breakfast and brunch as well. We have had an amazing response from our guests and can see that the market is slowly gaining its confidence and getting back on track.
