I chose this goal partially because of my location, but also because it was a collection that few people had ever bothered to collect. Aside from a few deleted webpages available through archive.org and the incomplete sources at Famicom World and BootlegGames Wiki, there just wasn't much to go on. Hundreds of hours of searching through auctions around the globe, chatting with other collectors, and just going out and tracking down this obscure corner of Famicom collecting, and I had ended up compiling my own personal list to help aid with my own collecting goals. Since those modest times, the scope of my personal collection has evolved into collecting everything Famicom, from Russian translations to educational cartridges, to official game packs and promos as well. As such, the documents which I use to keep track of my collection / game wants also evolved, and I felt it was time to compile it into a more user-friendly document. Likewise, I would like to offer this document as a gift to all of my collecting buddies out there, who have helped sell / trade / gift me so many carts over the past three years. My collection wouldn't be where it is today without you guys, and without all of the interesting discussions about Famicom, I probably would have also lost interest by now if I were to go at it truly solo. -

The history of Nintendo: the company, consoles and games Introduction A handful of the most popular video games from Mario to The Legend of Zelda, and video game consoles from the Nintendo Entertainment System to the Nintendo Switch, were all created and developed by the same company. That company is Nintendo. From its beginning, Nintendo was not a video gaming company. Since the company’s first launch of the Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES, to the present day of the latest release of the Nintendo Switch from 2017, they have sold over 5 billion video games and over 779 million hardware units globally, according to Nintendo UK (Nintendo UK). As Nintendo continues to release new video games and consoles, they have become one of the top gaming companies, competing alongside Sony and Microsoft. -

Nostalgia Games: Replaying The Past M. Gonlin Submitted in fulfilment of the degree of Bachelor of Arts (MECO), Honours Department of Media and Communications, University of Sydney October 2017 Abstract This thesis aims to analyse the function of a “nostalgia game” – games that intentionally reference to the past to broaden their appeal. The two games chosen for analysis are Yacht Club Games’ Shovel Knight (2014) and Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017). Shovel Knight exemplifies a game purposefully designed as a celebration of classic videogames on the NES form the late 1980s to early 1990s by using retro aesthetics and old game design conventions. Breath of the Wild demonstrates how a game series looks to its roots for innovation – the original Legend of Zelda released in 1986. The analysis will be divided in two sections for each game. The first section looks at the recurrence of game mechanics and references both games make through the concept of “remediation” (Bolter & Grusin, 1999) and how the games use nostalgia. The second section looks at the micro-temporalities of the games and how they reflect the games they are referencing. These micro-temporalities are referred to as “seriality” (Denson & Jahn- Sudmann, 2015). Nostalgia in Retro Game Design Maria B. Garda University of Lodz Institute of Modern Culture ul. Franciszkańska 1/5, 91-431 Łódź [email protected] ABSTRACT I distinguish between two kinds of nostalgia in retro game design – restorative and reflective. The former manifests itself in ‘total restoration of monuments of the past’, while the latter ‘lingers in the dreams of another place and another time’. Restorative nostalgia is visible in the retrogaming practices, such as creation of emulators, appreciation of classic titles and remaking them for new platforms. Reflective nostalgia is more detached from the past and sees history of the medium as a set of styles, it serves creativity and artistic erudition. In the article I elaborate on the nostalgic gestures of independent game designers in games such as Hotline Miami, Fez, FTL: Faster than light and McPixel. I argue that retro games are an exceedingly heterogeneous group with different authors having different objectives and motivations. Simon Reynolds The notion of nostalgia is omnipresent in popular culture that is obsessed with its own history. A certain kind of retromania (see Reynolds 2011) is present in practically every possible aspect of cultural practice from fashion to design to music to videogames. These retro tendencies manifest themselves in a general fascination with ‘the vintage’. The outdated aesthetics of the past half-century is now recreated, reconfigured, rediscovered, and recycled in the modern context. It is important to notice that ‘retro’ means focusing on the recent past and not on the classical antiquity or the Middle Ages as it used to be in the case of Renaissance or Romanticism (Guffey 2006, 10).
