Some cannot be differentiated at any life stage. Over the past decade, DNA barcoding has gained increasing adoption as a tool to both identify known species and to reveal cryptic taxa. Although there has not been a focused effort to develop a barcode library for them, reference sequences are now available for 77% of the 409 species of arthropods documented on major pest databases. Aside from developing the reference library needed to guide specimen identifications, past barcode studies have revealed that a significant fraction of arthropod pests are a complex of allied taxa. -

Argentulia, new genus (Tortricinae: Euliini), is described to accommo date A. montana (Bartlett-Calve rt 1893), new combination, type species, and A. gentilii, new species, from Chile and Argentina, A neotype is designated for A. montana, In gen eral facies, members of the new genus are unlike any other species in the tribe Euliini. However, features of the male and female genitalia suggest a close relationship to Varifula Razowski from Chile. Additional key words: phylogeny, neotype, systematics, Euliini, Proeulia. "Antithesia" montana Bartlett-Calvert, 1893, had a history of taxo nomic uncertainty until its mystery was solved by Clarke (1978). The type apparently was lost sometime after the description, leaving a gen eralized illustration (Bartlett-Calvert 1893:831) as the only permanent record of the moth. In 1922 Meyrick transferred the species to Hyper callia (Oecophoridae), apparently based on a misinterpretation of the il lustration in which he mistook the antennae for long labial palpi. Based on a single female specimen collected in Argentina in 1974, Clarke (1978) was able to associate the moth convincingly with the illustration and original description. Clarke (1978) provisionally transferred A. mon tana to Proeulia Obraztsov, whose included species have similar female genitalia and wing venation. I recently discovered a small series of P montana, along with an unde scribed congener, in the recently acquired Gentili Collection at the Na tional Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. -

Gates Clarke Chairman, Department of Entomology Introduction It has been my privilege and pleasure to study the Microlepidoptera collected in the Juan Fernandez Islands in 1951, 1952, and 1955 by Dr. Guillermo Kuschel, Centro de Investigationes Zoologicas, Uni- versity of Chile, Santiago, and to him my thanks are due for this opportunity. Through the coui-tesy of Dr. Kuschel I have been permitted to deposit the types of all the new species in the collection of the U.S. National Museum, Smithsonian Institution. Paratypes of some of the species, where series permitted, are also in the Museum, while others are distributed in the Natural History Museum and the University of Chile in Santiago. My sincere thanks are due Dr. Lars Brundin, Naturhistoriska Riksmuseum, Stockholm, for his generous permission to study Auri- villius' types deposited in that institution. To Mr. John D. Obraztsov The Neotropical species usually referred to the genera Eulior Hiibner, Tortrix Linne, and Cnephasia Curtis actually have little in common with these Holarctic genera. Some of these species have been relegated recently to the genera Argyrotaenia Stephens, Sub- argyrotaenia Obraztsov, Proeulia Clarke, Anopina Obraztsov, and others, but the generic position of many species still remains uncertain. Five new species from Central Chile described in this paper and four already known are assigned to the genus Proeulia. Additional infor- mation is included here concerning the previously described species. The genus Proeulia was established recently for two species from the Juan Fernandez Islands (Clarke, 1963). The characters of this genus, originally based on a study of its type, P. robinsoni (Aurivillius), Grant. The Chilean fruit leaf roller Proeulia auraria is a pest of economically important fruit species. Two compounds attractive to males have been identified as (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (E11-14:OAc) and (E)-11- tetradecenol (E11-14:OH) and are currently being used in Chile to monitor this species. Preliminary experiments carried out by our group suggested that the 2-compound mixture might not be optimal for the attraction of males, which prompted us to reinvestigate the sex pheromone of P. auraria in the present study. The pheromone component candidates were extracted from pheromone glands with hexane and identified by gas chromatography (GC) with electroantennographic detection (EAD), GC-mass spectrometry, and a comparison of the analytical data of the natural compounds with those of authentic reference substances. The EAD active compounds were identified as tetradecyl acetate (14:OAc), E11-14:OAc, (Z)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (Z11-14:OAc), and E11-14:OH in a relative ratio of 11:100:4:37, respectively.
