  • Night Swimming 2020 Was the Year I Chose to Believe in Magic
Night Swimming 2020 was the year I chose to believe in magic. This was no epiphany, and neither was it an awakening, doubt giving way as the mind edges toward a different view. I chose magic like it was medicine: deliberately, knowing full well what I was up to. Perhaps it would have happened whatever the year, because this was the year I gave birth to my first child. I discovered that having a child requires heavy-duty magic. There are too many risks, and almost too much wonder, in bringing a life into the world. A sense of magic is necessary. It must be magic that plods, that feels ordinary. It is the magic of ‘we are safe’, the magic of ‘nothing can go wrong’. It is a trick, of course, a sleight of mind. I’m calling it magic. It’s also known as plain old storytelling. I’ve been busy with it. Haven’t you? Before I lived most of my life without any magic. When I first knew my partner, Dan, I was fascinated by his description of his belief in God. ‘Not believing in Him would be like not believing in my left leg’. I thrilled at this faith, ordinary and irrefutable, humdrum and yet unassailable. It was embodied. It couldn’t be undone by mere questioning. Although my immediate family weren’t religious, the gaze of a Protestant God was present throughout my childhood. He was the audience for our school assemblies (the kids who couldn’t sing well were told not to sing; God didn’t want to hear that) and He was an ever-present authority for our baby-sitter Mrs Mackenzie, who also ran the Sunday School.

  • 2019–2020 Annual Report
ANNUAL REPORT 2019–20 Dear Friends, This annual report was finalized in a world that was unthinkable when the year began. Even though such a report typically looks back, this unprecedented moment calls for looking forward. The Museum is now an all-digital, all-the-time enterprise, for how long we do not know. But that alone is not enough. This is a time for learning and growing. Our digital education resources and virtual trainings and programs must serve our many diverse partners and audiences—teachers, faculty, students, leaders, and the general public. But, we have learned that in digital education, quantity is not quality, and that virtual education is much more complex than we imagined. Demand for our online resources and teaching support has soared, and we are experimenting and reimagining our work for this new world. Our role has always been to help build and lead the fields of Holocaust scholarship and education as well as genocide prevention. Now these fields face challenges and opportunities as never before. Thanks to your ongoing generosity, the Museum is well positioned to learn from this crisis and grow into an even stronger, more impactful institution, whose educational message is more urgent than ever. Thank you, Howard M. Lorber, Chairman Allan M. Holt, Vice Chairman Sara J. Bloomfield, Director FOUNDERS SOCIETY Gifts as of August 7, 2020 The Museum is deeply grateful to our leading donors, whose cumulative gifts of $1 million or more make our far-reaching impact possible. May you always walk the glorious road to success. All the best in life. May you achieve greatness and touch all your dreams. May you get all your wishes but one, so you always have something to strive for. The universe works in crazy ways. Your good luck will come in waves, and so does your bad, so you have to take the good with the bad and press forward. If I have to wish you something, I would have to say have a very nice day. May your pockets be heavy and your heart be light. The good luck you have made for yourself is an inspiration to many. May it continue throughout your life. I wish you a very happy life ahead in which you do not need to worry about anything. May you get all the thing you want in life. Best Wishes Always. If we had one wish for you on this special day it would be: May the best of your past be the worst of your future. May the sun always shine on your window pane; may a rainbow be certain to follow each rain. Good luck is a residue of preparation. To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe. Here are best wishes that your profession brings satisfaction, and pride to you always.
