JAMES CATHEDRAL X SEATTLE X 9 APRIL 2021 X 6:30 PM X MUSICAL PRAYER mark hilliard wilson St. James Cathedral Guitarist Notes by Mark Hilliard Wilson Renewal and Redemption, Part 2 We are now at the one-year anniversary of the weekly Musical Prayer at Saint James Cathedral and I am so incredibly grateful for the opportunity to share my thoughts and music here at St. James. It’s been a very tough year in so many ways. Last year’s theme for the first musical prayer was “Renewal,” and tonight, I play an updated program with the added theme of redemption. More and more people are getting vaccinated which means we are getting closer and closer to a chance to actually meet in person. Longer days, occasionally even warm ones, and a sense of a more predictable course of action with our government feels like a collective lowering of the blood pressure. My program is a celebration of our ability to navigate hard times. It’s been a tough year and I’ve chosen music that reflects vehicles of renewal, whether found in prayer Oracion( de la Mañana), or nature (Wild Mountain Thyme), in reflection Charme( de la nuit), or even dance!     Veranstaltungsübersicht Sommersemester 2019 Foto: Jan Becke VERANSTALTUNGSÜBERSICHT Die Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften Gegründet 1909, ist sie die wissenschaftliche Akademie des Landes Baden-Württemberg und eine der acht deutschen Akademien der Wissenschaften. Sie versteht sich als traditionelle Gelehrtengesellschaft und als Trägerinstitution moderner außer­ universitärer Forschung. Die Mitglieder der Heidelberger Akademie treffen sich als herausragende Vertreter ihrer jeweiligen Disziplin regelmäßig zur Diskussion von wissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen. Durch die Vielfalt der vertretenen Forschungsgebiete ermög­ licht die Akademie wie kaum eine andere Institution fächer­ übergreifenden Gedankenaustausch und Zusammenarbeit über Disziplinen, Fakultäten und Universitäten hinweg. Die Akademie verantwortet derzeit 19 Forschungsvorhaben. Ihr Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem Gebiet langfristiger Grundlagenfor­ schung. Mit einer Reihe von Veranstaltungen, wie Tagungen oder Vortragsreihen, richtet sie sich einerseits an Fachgelehrte, andererseits aber auch verstärkt an die Öffentlichkeit. Ein weiteres Anliegen ist der Akademie die Förderung junger Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler in Baden­Württem­ berg. Mit der Einrichtung eines Nachwuchsprogramms (WIN-Kolleg), das dieses Jahr mit einem neuen Teilprogramm auch fünf weitere Forschungsvorhaben interdiszi plinärer Ausrich­ tung umsetzt, sowie durch die Vergabe von Forschungspreisen leistet die Akademie einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Förderung junger Karrieren in der Wissenschaft. Whether music was the cata- lyst for dance or whether dance existed before music is a question that may never be answered definitively, but since such a large portion of the music in existence is dance music it deserves our attention and a thoughtful examination. The written record of dance is not as old as the written record of music. The earli- est descriptive texts on dance date from the fifteenth century. Understandable manu- scripts of music date from nearly a thousand years earlier. References to dance are as old as Old Testament Bible stories and the ancient Greeks wrote of dance, but what the movements that constituted those dances looked like is lost to us. Understanding what the dances looked like or how they were performed is not our purpose in studying them in a music class, rather, we will be examining dance music for its musical con- tent, such as its form and rhythmic characteristics, and its purpose in a social context. RHYTHM AND METER IN DANCE MUSIC Any discussion of dance must begin with rhythm since that musical element is the foundation of dance. As was mentioned in Chapter 1, rhythm is the aspect of music that animates it, makes it feel like it is alive and vibrant.
