It follows the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education curriculum, and has classes from standard KG (Kindergarten) to standard 12. On the death of Paul Goethals, Archbishop of Calcutta, in July 1901 the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Calcutta commemorated his memory by the establishment of an educational institution for boys in Kurseong. In February 1907 classes started in the building erected by the first Principal, Br. M.S.O. Brien (1907– 1914). The number of boys in residence was 110. The official opening took place on 30 April 1907. The first prospectus had in view the affiliation of the School to the Shibpur Engineering College, Calcutta. However, the Sub Overseer Course did not fit with the needs of the pupils and was dropped in favour of the Cambridge Locals.

    A BIOGRAPHY OF MOTHER MARY BERNADETTE PRASAD KISPOTTA (1878 - 1961) THE FOUNDRESS OF THE CONGREGATION OF THE DAUGHTERS OF ST. ANNE, RANCHI The Early Years Khrist Anandit Ruth Kispotta, later known as Mary Bernadette, was born to Mr. Puran Prasad Kispotta and Paulina at Sargaon (Mander parish), in a Lutheran Adivasi family, 32 kms from Ranchi, the Capital of Jharkhand state, India, on 2 June, 1878. Puran Prasad Kispotta was a Mukhtar at the court. Unfortunately her mother died shortly after giving birth. Khrist Anandit Ruth being too small, her Father Puran Prasad married again to provide her a mother to take care of her. Ruth was about two years old when her step mother gave birth to Sushila on 28 September 1881. In 1859, the Belgian Jesuits missionaries had come to Bengal and in 1869, they came to what is now part of Chotanagpur with a mission at Chaibasa among Adivasis. Mr. Puran Prasad got to know the Servant of God Fr. Constant Lievens, S.J. and worked with him in the court regarding the land matter of Adivasis of Chotangpur . Fr. Lievens started his mission in 1885. Early life of Khrist Anandit Ruth Puran Prasad took Ruth to Ranchi at the age of 5. There she lived in the house of the Pastor who along with his wife treated her like their own child. There she studied in Bethesda School of Lutheran Mission. Later she stayed in the Boarding. Her Father Mr. Puran Prasad became a catholic and was renamed Paulus. This was a great shock for Ruth.

    Biography of Sr. Mary Bernadette, DSA Fr. Alex Ekka, SJ Director, XISS Mary Bernadette Kispotta was born on June 2, 1878 to Mr. Puran Prasad and Mrs. Paulina Kispottain a devout Lutheran family at village Sargaon of Mandar Block in the present Ranchi District of Jharkhand State in India and was baptised as Christ Anandit Ruth Kispotta on June 9, 1878. At the age of 12 she was christened in the Catholic faith and took the name Mary Bernadette. She had two step brothers and three step sisters. Her father was a small official called Mokhtar having a power of attorney at the District Court. He had also built a house at Siromtoli in Ranchi, from where his children used to go to the local schools. Sr. Mary Bernadette recounts in her memoir that the Daughters of St. Anne worked with the Ursuline Sisters in many places in Chotanagpur like Ranchi, Khunti, Tongo and Rengharih to mention a few. The Archbishop sent them in groups of four or five to various places for religious instruction and general education of people. Sr. Mary Bernadette also mentions very fondly about the spiritual pillars of her Congregation. One of them wasFr. Alphonse Scharlaeken, SJ, who was the instructor, godfather, and provider of the Daughters of St. Anne from November1902 – April 1926. He also developed further the rules of the Congregation according to the norms of the Church. Second was Fr. Fredrick Peal, SJ, who was a teacher and like a foster father to the Daughters of St. Anne from 1926 – December 1933. By now Sr.

XAVIER’S COLLEGE (AUTONOMOUS), KOLKATA YEAR OF REPORT : JULY 2009 TO JUNE 2010 _____________________________________________________________________________ SECTION – A PLAN OF ACTION CHALKED OUT BY THE IQAC IN THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR 2009 – 2010 TOWARDS QUALITY ENHANCEMENT Introduction : The sesquicentenary celebrations were inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Sri Buddhadeb Bhattacharya on January 22, 2009. He paid tribute to the rich heritage and long history of St. Xavier’s. He emphasized upon the inevitable relationship between education and development. He stressed on the importance of education as a crucial factor that contributes to nation building. He praised St. Xavier’s for its service to Bengal and to India and complimented it as a centre of knowledge and excellence. The Jubilee theme was “Seemar Majhe Ashim Tumi”. The inaugural function set in motion a series of programmes, both in the School and in the College. Various departments and Associations had organized a number of programmes including seminars, workshops, symposia, debates, industrial visits, cultural festivals and so on. The aim of the College is to enhance the overall institutional quality and effectiveness with emphasis on excellence in learning and teaching and to engage in creative research at the highest level. To achieve the goals, the following are identified as the major thrust areas in the year 2009‐10: • Successful completion of 150 years celebrations. • Introduction of new courses ‐ UG, PG and career oriented certificate & diploma courses. • Further expansion of space accommodating class rooms and offices in the new building.
