Harold II 1066 1066 Norman Conquest- Battle of Hastings William I 1066-1087 Ranulph, a Norman Knight, accompanies in the invasion of England. As a reward he is granted the Barony of Hatfield Peverel in Essex. Ranulph marries William the Conqueror’s mistress Maud Ingelrica (a Saxon Princess) and takes the surname of Peverel.

1086 Domesday Ranulph is listed in the Domesday Book holding lordships predominantly in Essex and Suffolk. His son William is also recorded as having 162 lordships. Among these included the castles of Nottingham and Peveril. William II 1087-1100 1090/1 Ranulph dies leaving a son and heir William the 2nd Baron of Hatfield Peverel. He is also known as William Peverel of London and has previously been a Governor of Dover Castle and was the first High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. There are rumours that William may have been the illegitimate son of William the Conqueror but neither party confirms this in records.

Various William is a favourite of William the Conqueror and is granted Henry I 1100-35 over 100 lordships in central England.
