The Jewish Observer, October 2000 47 It takes nearly 10 years and almost half a million dollars to train the peo ple who work on your heart. But what about the people who work on your Neshoma - the Talmidei Chachomim and potential Gedolei Hador who will be shaping our Neshomos for genera- tions to come?

Do they deserve any less? It takes years to study, learn and master the Shas adequately, but over 2000 students are devoting them selves to just that, thanks to Mifal Hashas.

Mifal Hashas encourages the mastery of "Gantz Shas" by administering monthly written tests to committed Talmudim worldwide. VJhoever passes the test is awarded a stipend for that month, enabling him to put bread on the table.

How can we help them? You can actually become a partner of his and earn a part of the merit of his Torah study. But Gedolei Hadar don't happen overnight. It takes hand work, perseverance and your support.

Give now. Give generously.

50 The Jewish Observer, October 2000 Crying? At a tim.e like this?

Having cbildren is one ofthe most imponant mitzvos. It is also a lime ofgreat joy, when the family comes together to ·celebrate the arrival ofthe newest family member, and to give praise to Hashem Yisborach for the miracle oflife.

However, for some families, this is not the case. In fact, the new baby can result in extreme suffering with tragic results, including suicide ofthe mother and infanticide. Sometimes, the arrival ofa new baby can destroy one ofthe holiest matters in the Torah: the family.

The cause? Postpanum Depression. It sounds innocent enough ... a little depression after binh. But, for some, it signals the beginning of a psychological and emotional roller-coaster with long term, and often disastrous results for the entire community, if not treated properly. Depression, Mania, Psychosis, Panic Disorder, can all be triggered by binh.

NITZA- THE JERUSALEM POSTPARTUM SUPPOIIT NETWORK was formed (out of necessity) in 1997. Since then we have helped hundreds offamilies living in Bretz Yisroel to avoid such tragedies. Because ofNIIZA, the lives of new mothers have literally been saved, their new babies have been given the chance to thrive, and, their families have re-bonded and returned to lives of Torah normalcy. This is wby so many Gedolei Torah have given their blessings for the success ofNIIZA.
