Yet when the Torah tells us (14:22), “You shall fully tithe ( aser te’aser ) all the produce of your field,” our Sages derive another concept. “ Aser bishvil shetis’asher ,” they say. “Tithe in order that you shall become wealthy.” Why is this so? When the charity a person gives, explains Rav Levi Yitzchak, comes up to Heaven, its provenance is scrutinized. Why was this particular amount giv en to charity? Then the relationship to the full amount of the harvest is discovered. There is a ration of ten to one, and the amount given is one tenth of the total. In this way the entire harvest participates in the mitzvah but only in a secondary role. Therefore, if the charity was given with a full heart, the person giving the charity merits that the quality of his donation is elevated. The following year, the entire harvest is elevated from a secondary role to a primary role in the giving of the charit y. Tzadik righteous one", pl. tzadikim [tsadi" , צדיק :Tzadik/Zadik/Sadiq [tsaˈdik] (Hebrew ,ṣadiqim) is a title in Judaism given to people considered righteous צדיקים [kimˈ such as Biblical figures and later spiritual masters. The root of the word ṣadiq, is ṣ-d- tzedek), which means "justice" or "righteousness". The feminine term for a צדק) q righteous person is tzadeikes/tzaddeket. Tzadik is also the root of the word tzedakah ('charity', literally 'righteousness'). The term tzadik "righteous", and its associated meanings, developed in Rabbinic thought from its Talmudic contrast with hasid ("pious" honorific), to its exploration in Ethical literature, and its esoteric spiritualisation in Kabbalah. Since the late 17th century, in Hasidic Judaism, the institution of the mystical tzadik as a divine channel assumed central importance, combining popularization of (hands- on) Jewish mysticism with social movement for the first time.[1] Adapting former Kabbalistic theosophical terminology, Hasidic thought internalised mystical Joseph interprets Pharaoh's Dream experience, emphasising deveikut attachment to its Rebbe leadership, who embody (Genesis 41:15–41). CANTORS BANTER Newsletter No 5 June 2014 European Cantors Association (ECA) Sivan 5774 Welcome to the World of Synagogue Music Dear Friends, Welcome to the latest edition of the ECA Newsletter, produced in honour of the festival of Shavuot. I hope that you will find it to be both inspiring and informative. In this edition we take a look at the role that music plays in our synagogue lives, focusing in particular on the ‘Umipnei Chatoeinu’ prayer, a festival prayer that has lent itself to some very well-known Cantorial masterpieces. I have also included an obituary for the legendary Chazzan David Werdyger, whose life story itself is profoundly inspirational and whose contribution to Jewish music is unparalleled in the post-war era. To portray his proficiency in both the worlds of Cantorial and Chassidic music I have attached his famous masterpiece Shema Yisroel as well as his recording of Talmud’s Chassidic composition of Lo Tevoshi from the Friday Evening Service. Finally, the ECA is looking forward to holding its annual convention in Budapest, the magnificent Hungarian capital. Booking is open and your attendance is highly recommended. Shavuot is of course the time that we received the Torah at Sinai. Throughout Jewish history the Torah has not been read as prose; rather it has been chanted as song. The verses in the synagogue are intoned melodically according to the appropriate leyning notes; the Mishnah and Talmud are meditated upon and memorized using the ‘learning steiger’ and even studies in ethics have their particular tunes in the study halls of the Yeshiva World. -

Rav Yoel Teitelbaum Zt”L (1887 - 1979) Known As “Reb Yoelish,” Was the Saintly Rebbe of Satmar
Biographies of Great Men Mentioned Within the Pages of this Book Rav Yoel Teitelbaum zt”l (1887 - 1979) known as “Reb Yoelish,” was the saintly Rebbe of Satmar. He was already a highly regarded Rebbe in Hungary and when the Nazis invaded Hungary in 1944, he was rescued from death in Nazi-controlled Transylvania as a result of a deal between a Hungarian official, Rudolph Kastner, and a deputy of Adolf Eichmann. Although Kastner intended to rescue only Hungarian Zionists on a special train bound for Switzerland, R’ Yoel and a few other religious Jews were also given seats. (It has been said that this was the result of a dream in which Kastner’s father-in-law was informed by his late mother that if the Grand Rabbi of Satmar was not included on the train, none of the passengers would survive.) En route, the train was re-routed by the Germans to Bergen-Belsen, where the 1600 passengers languished for four months while awaiting further negotiations between rescue activists and the Nazi leadership. In the end, the train was released and continued on to Switzerland. R’ Yoel briefly lived in Jerusalem after World War II, but, at the request of some of his chassidim who had emigrated to the United States, he settled there instead and established a large community in the densely Orthodox neighborhood of Williamsburg located in northern Brooklyn in New York City. * Biographies * 313 Rav Yitzchak Zev Halevi Soloveitchik zt”l (1886-1959) known throughout the world as the “Brisker Rav” (“rabbi of Brisk”) was the oldest son of the great Rav Chaim Soloveitchik zt"l of Brisk. -
