Highlights

On 29 January, UNICEF presented the results of the Standardized Monitoring and Assessment of Relief and Transition (SMART) survey conducted in June 2014 in all the 15 districts of Sa’ada. The survey indicated high levels of malnutrition and stunting among children below 5 years of age. WFP distributed monthly nutrition supplies to 67 health facilities in nine districts in Amran. Oxfam completed and handed over three water projects to community leaders in two districts in Sa’ada Governorate.

Protection

Sa’ada

Through the UNHCR-supported IDPs Community Centre in Sa’adah, 132 females and 61 males received social counselling, 146 females and 11 males received psychological counselling and 11 females and four males received legal counselling. Danish Refugee Council (DRC) conducted two training workshops in Sa’ada for 35 (13 male and 22 female) community protection committee members from Sa’adah, Saqayn, Sahar, Kitaf wa Al Buga’a and As Safra districts. This is part of capacity building for community protection committees and aims to enhance monitoring and reporting skills on gender based violence (GBV) and grave violations of child rights. Women Union conducted two awareness-raising sessions for 49 women on violence against women in Sa’adah town. Intersos, in partnership with Sa’ada Women Society, conducted two awareness-raising sessions in Sa’adah on violence against women for 40 female participants. Sa’ada Women Society reported five cases of early marriage and provided the necessary response for each case. The project is funded by UNFPA.

Amran

On 18 January, UNICEF in collaboration with Raqeeb Organization for Human Rights conducted a child protection workshop in Sana’a for 40 Imams focusing on creating awareness among local religious leaders on grave violations against children and child rights. 20 preachers from Jabal Iyal Yazid, Iyal Surayh and 20 from Al Hazm, Al Gail, Az Zahir, Al Khalq, Al Maslub districts in Amran and Al Jawf

Governorates, respectively, attended. The children rights and protection project is funded by the Emergency Response Fund (ERF). UNICEF in partnership with Yemen Women Union, conducted community awareness-raising on life- saving key messages in the districts of Al Sudah, As Sawd that targeted 17,337 people (3,865 boys, 2,630 girls, 5,057 men, and 5,758 women). The activities included one-to-one sessions, group discussions, theatre shows. From 25 to 28 January, Save the Children International (SCI) conducted a training workshop on positive discipline and alternatives to corporal punishments for 20 schoolteachers (10 male and 10 female) from seven schools (Al-Arshad, Al-Khair, Al-Hamza, 30 November, Osama bin Zaid, Al-Noor, and Al-Hussain schools) in Amran City. From 28 to 29 January, UNICEF in cooperation with Raqeeb Organization for Human Rights conducted a workshop for 30 field staff (20 male and 10 female) from 15 NGOs from Amran on monitoring and reporting of child right violations. During the training, Raqeeb distributed 2,000 brochures on child rights, to participants to distribute to the communities in Amran Governorate. Child Protection

Sa’ada

UNICEF through its partner, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour (MoSAL) and with technical support from Yemen Executive Mine Action Centre, conducted mine risk education in the districts of Haydan, Saqayn, Razih, Al Dhaher, Shada’a, Al Hashwah, Kitaf, As Safra, Sahar and Sa’adah. The activity reached 11,896 children (4,922 girls, 6,974 boys) and 10,928 community members (5,457 women, 5,471 men). In addition, MoSAL installed mine risk education billboards in Sahar, As Safra and Kitaf Districts. Photo: UNICEF trainers workshop for 35 participants (16 female and 19 male) from Sa’adah, Sahar, Saqayn, Razih, Majz, Haydan, As Safra and Baqim Districts in Sa’ada, and five (one female and four male) from Bart Al Anan, Az Zahir , Al Maton and Al Hazm Districts in Al Jawf governorate. The participants, representing various local community based organizations and staff from MoSAL, acquired knowledge on child protection minimum standards in humanitarian interventions.

Amran

From 21 to 22 January, 100 community members (51 male, 49 female) participated in a workshop on the role of community committee members on reporting and monitoring child violations and abuse. Raqeep Organization for Human Rights conducted the workshop for Human Rights in Iyal Surayh and Jabal Iyal Yazid districts.

Al Jawf

On 26 January, Raqeeb Organization for Human Rights concluded training in Sana’a for 17 participants from Al Khalq, Az Zahir, Al Hazm, Al Maslub, and Al Ghayl districts (Al Jawf Governorate) and Majzar District (Marib Governorate) on monitoring and reporting mechanism on grave violations against children. The ERF and UNICEF fund the child protection project.

MoSAL, with technical support from Yemen Executive Mine Action Centre, reached 5,938 children (2,357 girls, 3,581 boys) and 7,735 community members (2,695 women, 5,040 men) including IDPs through mine risk education in Al-Hazm, Al-Khalq, Al Maslub, Al Mattoon, Al-Matammah and Al-Zahir districts. UNICEF funded the activity.

Nutrition

Sa’ada

On 29 Jan, UNICEF presented the results of Standardized Monitoring and Assessment of Relief and Transition (SMART) survey conducted by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with UNICEF in June 2014. The survey covered the 15 districts of Sa’ada. The sample, which was composed of 74 clusters from all districts, indicated a global acute malnutrition (GAM) rate of 10.4% and 9.0% for lowlands and highlands respectively. The GAM rates for Sa’ada reflect a serious nutrition emergency particularly in the lowlands. The report also shows that prevalence of stunting is 57.0 % and 68 % with severe stunting at 24.1 % and 34.4 % in lowland and highland respectively. Stunting prevalence in Sa’ada remains critical at > 40 % according to WHO classification. Amran WFP distributed monthly nutrition supplies to 67 health facilities in nine districts (Amran, As Sudah, Dhi Bin, Iyal Surayh, Jabal Yazid, Kharif, Maswar, Raydah and Thula districts), targeting 17,264 children under 5 years and pregnant and lactating women. Save the Children International (SCI) distributed 67 cartons of Plumpynut to seven health facilities in Al Jabal in Maswar, Al Sawd and As Sudah districts, and conducted a community-based management of acute malnutrition refresher training for 30 (20 female 10 male) community health volunteers. The participants were from Al-Sawd, As Sudah, Maswar and Iyal Surayh districts. Al Jawf

51 health staff participated in a community-based management of acute malnutrition training supported by UNICEF. The participants who are from Kharab Al Marashi, Bart Al Anan, Rajuzah, Al Humaydat districts, will increase the number of trained health cadres who will be available to run 16 more outpatient therapeutic programme facilities and four mobile units in addition to 12 fixed outpatient therapeutic programme in 2014. The project is implemented by Humanitarian Aid and Development Organization (HAD) in Al Jawf.

Education

Sa’ada

On 25 -29 January, 56 teachers (15 female and 41 male) from seven schools in Saqayn and Haydan Districts participated in training on psychosocial support, positive discipline and alternatives to corporal punishment. The training was supported by Save the Children International (SCI).

Health

In January, seven health facilities supported by Save the Children International (SCI) in the districts of Sahar, As Safra, Saqayn and Haydan provided medical consultation to 7,494 patients, antenatal care for 608 pregnant women, post natal care for 318 women and trained mid-wives assisted 98 deliveries. 154 children were vaccinated against measles. Health education sessions were conducted for 2,700 people (1,200 male and 1,500 female) and nutrition education sessions for 2,100 beneficiaries (700 male and 1,400 female) at health facilities. 11-14 January, SCI in Amran, conducted supportive supervision training for five health facilities staff (Al- Jabal, Al-Marbo’, Bait Hazeb, Bani Jaish, Bani Taleq) in the districts of Jabal Iyal Yazid, As Sawd and As Sudah. 15 health staff (10 males and 5 females) attended the training. On 28 January, the Governor of Sa’ada inaugurated the construction of the Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Centre funded by the ICRC. The centre is expected to serve at least 20,000 beneficiaries mostly people who were wounded during the six rounds of war in Sa’ada. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2016.

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

Sa’ada From 5 to 9 January, UNICEF in collaboration with its implementing partner, Al Amal, conducted training on hygiene promotion for 10 promoters (six male, four4 female) from of . They will serve for one year as community hygiene promoters to improve hygiene practices through individual sessions, group discussions and social gathering and in schools. Oxfam completed and handed over three water projects to the local council and community leaders. The projects are in Al Malheet (Al Dhaher District) benefiting 7,000 returnees and host community members, in Rubai’e () benefiting 4,240 returnees and host community and in Al Hassamah (Al Dhaher District) serving 3,500 returnees. 1,400 students from Harban, Al Tawila and Al Imam Ali schools (Sahar District) and Khadija School in Saqayn District participated in three cleaning campaigns supported by Save the Children International (SCI). In Amran, SCI distributed 8 hygiene kits to 8 health facilities in Al-Jabal (Maswar District), Bait Hazeb, Bani Taleq, and Bani Jaish (As-Sawd District) and Al-Marbo’ and Bani Mohab (As Sudah District). Coordination: Activities, challenges and solutions

On January 11, the monthly AHCT discussed the need for a unified and consistent approach to addressing local authorities’ request for information on humanitarian response activities and operations. On January 13, the HC, Johannes Van Der Klaauw and the Head of OCHA, Trond Jensen visited Saadah and discussed with the Governor the humanitarian situation and needs in the governorate. The HC underscored the importance of coordination with the local authorities in addition to explaining the main objectives of humanitarian action in Yemen, namely: saving lives in emergencies and support for durable solutions for communities displaced during the conflicts. On 22 January, the WASH cluster held its monthly meeting at the UN compound. Members discussed progress of on-going projects and plans of the coming months.
