A DNA-based cladistic analysis con- firms that it belongs to the Euptychiina, as sister to Forsterinaria and closely related to Taygetis, Posttaygetis, Parataygetis, Pseudodebis, and Harjesia. Although immature morphology also sug- gests that this species is closely related to Forsterinaria, none of the adult morphological synapo- morphies for the genera in the aforementioned clade occur in E. pronophila, a highly autapomorphic species. Because we were unable to place it with confidence in an established genus, the monotypic satyrine genus Guaianaza Freitas & Peña New Genus is described, with Eup- tychia pronophila Butler as the type species. Three new species and four new subspecies of Pronophila are described from Ecuador and northern Peru. The status of several taxa is revised. P. deverra THIEME, P. brennus THIEME and P. bogotensis JURRIAANSSE are regarded as subspecies of P. unifasciata; P. assarhaddon THIEME is a junior synonym of P. rosenbergi LATHY. All the species of Pronophila known to occur in Ecuador are listed and discussed. INTRODUCTION Pronophila DOUBLEDAY (Nymphalidae, Satyrinae, Pronophilini) comprise, depending on the systematic viewpoint, between 15 and 20 species ranging from Costa Rica to northern Argentina. This is a genus that is exceptionally homog- enous as far as the wing shape and colour patterns of the adults are concerned. The wing pattern consists of a dark brown upperside, generally with a series of subapical white or orange patches extending along the veins, a series of large postmedian black ocelli pupilled with blue on the forewing underside, sometimes showing through on the upperside, and a pattern of distinct slightly lighter and darker brown bands on the hindwing underside. The differences between various taxa consist in the colour and shape of the forewing subapical patches, the number, size, colour and alignment of the forewing underside ocelli, and the 70 TOMASZ W. -

Arenales 1256, Apartado 14-0434, Lima-14, Peru 3Laboratory of Genetics, Department of Biology, University of Turku, 20014 Turku, Finland Received 24 February 2009; accepted for publication 1 September 2009 We have inferred the most comprehensive phylogenetic hypothesis to date of butterflies in the tribe Satyrini. In order to obtain a hypothesis of relationships, we used maximum parsimony and model-based methods with 4435 bp of DNA sequences from mitochondrial and nuclear genes for 179 taxa (130 genera and eight out-groups). We estimated dates of origin and diversification for major clades, and performed a biogeographic analysis using a dispersal–vicariance framework, in order to infer a scenario of the biogeographical history of the group. We found long-branch taxa that affected the accuracy of all three methods. Moreover, different methods produced incongruent phylogenies. We found that Satyrini appeared around 42 Mya in either the Neotropical or the Eastern Palaearctic, Oriental, and/or Indo-Australian regions, and underwent a quick radiation between 32 and 24 Mya, during which time most of its component subtribes originated. Several factors might have been important for the diversification of Satyrini: the ability to feed on grasses; early habitat shift into open, non-forest habitats; and geographic bridges, which permitted dispersal over marine barriers, enabling the geographic expansions of ancestors to new environ- ments that provided opportunities for geographic differentiation, and diversification. -

Viloria3, Indiana Cristóbal Ríos-Málaver4 Resumen Objetivo. La región Andina presenta una gran variedad de paisajes naturales, en los cuales se encuentran zonas montañosas con una alta riqueza de mariposas de la subtribu Pronophilina, en este estudio se determinó la diversidad y estructura de la comunidad de las mariposas Pronophilina (Nymphalidae, Satyrinae) en un gradiente altitudinal del Cerro de Tierra Negra, en el departamento Norte de Santander. Metodología. Para realizar los muestreos se establecieron ocho estaciones en un gradiente altitudinal entre 2.700-3.400 msnm, utilizando trampas tipo Van Someren-Rydon con cebos atrayentes de pescado podrido y redes entomológicas manuales a lo largo de transectos de 100 metros. Resultados. Se encontró un total de 25 especies de mariposas Pronophilina, observando una mayor diversidad de especies en las estaciones de la franja altoandina (2.700-3.000 msnm) y un patrón de distribución restringido de algunas especies endémicas para la Cordillera Oriental de Colombia, como lo son Lymanopoda samius, Altopedaliodes tamaensis y Altopedaliodes cocytia. También se encontró una clara diferencia de dos comunidades en cuanto a la composición de especies entre las alturas correspondientes a bosque altoandino y páramo. Conclusiones. Resaltamos la importancia de documentar los patrones de diversidad y la estructura comunitaria de mariposas en los paisajes de alta montaña del Nororiente colombiano en el escenario del cambio global. -

Se presenta la primera parte de una serie de contribuciones al conocimiento de las mariposas (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea y Hesperioidea) del Pantepui. Se describe la morfología y la localización de los tepuyes, unas mesetas de origen precámbrico situadas en el Escudo de Guayana, en Suramérica. Se recapitula sobre la noción y el concepto de Pantepui, una entidad biogeográfica que corresponde sólo a los niveles montano, altimontano y altotepuyano de los tepuyes de Venezuela, Guyana y Brasil. Se comenta brevemente acerca de las hipótesis biogeográficas que intentan dilucidar el origen de la biota pantepuyana. Se revisa la historia de su descubrimiento y del estudio de sus mariposas. Se presenta por primera vez una lista comentada de varios taxones endémicos de la región. -

PYRCZ, [email protected] ABSTRACT. Two genera of Andean satyrine butterflies,Corderopedaliodes FORSTER and Physcopedaliodes FORSTER, are reassessed based on a study of adult morphology. Their female genitalia are examined and compared for the first time and their role in providing phylogenetically valuable characters is evaluated. The male genitalia of P. physcoa (HEWITSON), the type species of Physcopedaliodes, is re-examined and shown to possess two synapomorphic characters that are unique within the diverse Pedaliodes sensu lato complex, in the form of greatly transformed pedunculus and transtilla. All the species of Corderopedaliodes and Physcopedaliodes are listed and discussed. Pedaliodes symmachus GODMAN & SALVIN, previously associated with Corderopedaliodes and Physcopedaliodes, is transferred back to Pedaliodes. Two new species of Corderopedaliodes are described from Colombia and Peru. Pedaliodes pamphos THIEME n. syn. is considered a subjective junior synonym of Pedaliodes pandates (HEWITSON), and the new subspecies C. pandates olivieri n. ssp. is described from the valley of Cosñipata in Cuzco, Peru. Abstract: The present paper describes the immature stages and the natural history of Yphthimoides borasta. Eggs are pinkish white and round, with poorly marked hexagonal cells; the first instar is pale brown, turning dark brown with longitudinal zigzag stripes in later instars; the pupae are short, brown, without ornamentation or projections and with short, squared ocular caps. The immature stages are similar to those of other species of the genus Yphthimoides and to other representatives of the “Megisto clade”. Observed sex ratio in the field is 1:1 and adults fly in the canopy, explaining the rarity of this species in inventories and museum collections in comparison with other species of Yphthimoides. -

A new species of montane butterfly,Forsterinaria hannieri n. sp. (Nympha- lidae, Satyrinae) is described from the Guyana Shield in Venezuela. It is most similar to F. inornata (C. FELDER & R. FELDER, 1867) known from western slopes of the Andes in Colombia and Ecuador, but it shows unequivocal differences, especially in the male genital morphology. Key words: Euptychiina, Forsterinaria, new species, Pantepuy, taxonomy, Venezuela. INTRODUCTION The subfamily Satyrinae (Nymphalidae) is one of the most diverse groups of but- terflies, including about 2500 species, and at least 120 genera and over 1100 species in the neotropical realm. Neotropical satyrines are generally divided into three major groups, Euptychiini, Pronophilini and Haeterini, attributed tribal or subtribal ranks depending on the author (LAMAS et al. 2004, PYRCZ 2004). Montane satyrines of the neotropical realm belong mostly to the Pronophilini (PYRCZ, 2004). The tribe Eupty- chiini, comprising 41 genera (VILORIA 2003), is mostly lowland and premontane. The only strictly montane genus of the Euptychiini is Forsterinaria GRAY (1973) which is the subject of this paper. Montane butterfly fauna of the cloud forests of the Guyana Shield in southern Venezuela, referred to by a biogeographical term of Pantepuy, can be characterized as species poor compared to the Andes but, at the same time, as rich in endemics (NEILD 2008).
