This complex of 140 species includes large trees, dichotomous trees, shrubs and the extraordinary giant caulescent rosettes, considered as a classic example of adaptation in tropical high-elevation ecosystems. -

We explore the influence of each gene region on the support given to each node of the most parsimonious tree derived from a combined analysis of all three genes using Partitioned Bremer Support. We also explore the influence of assuming equal weights for all characters in the combined analysis by investigating the stability of clades to different transition/transversion weighting schemes. The sample was collected during the Characterization of wild Entomofauna of the Frio river basin jurisdiction of CDMB, in secondary forests in an altitudinal gradient from 1,000 to 2,911 masl. 79 specimens of the family Pieridae were collected, belonging to 13 genera of which Leptophobia had 5 species, and Catasticta and Eurema had 3 species each. We obtained 22 species distributed in six sampling locations, where the highest richness of species was in Diviso Experimental Center with 12 species and Esperanza Experimental Center with 10. The analysis of the inventory quality showed a potential richness of 32.81 species, a proportion of the observed species of 67.05% and a sampling effort of 76.41%. The comparison of inventories for each locality showed a certain similarity between La Nevera, La Mariana and La Judia, and fewer similarities with El Diviso. -

Two new species of the genus Pedaliodes BUTLER are described from the Huancabamba Deflection area along the Peru – Ecuador border, the transitional zone between northern and central Andes, and one of the most diverse faunal regions of montane butterflies of the Neotropical region. Pedaliodes namballe n. sp., described from the Tabaconas-Namballe National Sanctuary, is closely related to P. arturi PYRCZ & VILORIA which occurs allopatrically on the western slopes of the Andes in the same area. P. garlaczi n. sp., found in the southern part of the Podocarpus National Park, has no close relatives identified so far. A check-list of the species of the genus Pedaliodes sensu lato occurring in Tabaconas-Namballe is given. It was hitherto considered monotypic, however this study shows it is highly polytypic. Five new subspecies are described differing noticeably in the shape, size and colour of the conspicuous hindwing upperside bluish-green patch. Some differences can be observed in male genitalia as well. A western-eastern slopes biogeographical pattern is uncovered, and the Santo Domingo Valley is recognized herein for the first time as a center of endemism at a subspecies level. Microstructure and function of hindwing upperside blue scales are discussed suggesting their role in mate locating. Affinities and phyletic relations of L. marianna with other congeners are discussed based on colour patterns, male and female genitalia, and molecular data. Male genitalia and molecular data place it in the clade of L. obsoleta however female genitalia and colour patterns indicate close affinity with L. -

Data are from 12 years field experience in the country and from Museums specimens. Some new species records are added to Ecuadorian fauna and it is presumed that at least a 10% more of new records will be obtained in the near future. Ecuadorian Pieridae, although in the past many taxa were described from this country, are far from being thoroughly known. One of the most prolific author was Hewitson (1852-1877; 1869-1870; 1870; 1877) who described many species from the collections made by Buckley and Simons . Some of the "Ecuador” citations by Hewitson are pointed out more precisely by the same author (Hewit son , 1870) in his index to the list of species collected by Buckley in remote areas uneasily reached even to-day (V ane -Wright, 1991). An important contribution on Lepidoptera of Ecuador is given by Dognin (1887-1896) who described and listed many new species collected by Gaujon in the Loja area, where typical amazonian and páramo species are included. -

Larval morphology is illustrated for four instars. Drawings of head chaetotaxy and setal maps are provided for the first time for the genus. The host plant is identified as a dwarf bamboo Chusquea villosa (Clark) (Poaceae). Striking individual variation among adults of L. caracara is discussed. Key words Caterpillar, Neotropic, chaetotaxy, Satyrinae. 1 Introduction Butterflies belonging to the genus Lymanopoda Westwood, 1851, within the neotropical subtribe Pronophilina (Nymphalidae: Satyrinae: Satyrini), are typically montane, and distributed in mid and high elevation habitats (elev. 800– 4000 m). They are found almost exclusively in the Andes, including their peripheral ranges, except for two Mesoamerican species (Pyrcz et al., 2018). Currently, the genus contains 64 described species, and four further identified but as yet undescribed species (Pyrcz et al., 2018). -

Arenales 1256, Apartado 14-0434, Lima-14, Peru 3Laboratory of Genetics, Department of Biology, University of Turku, 20014 Turku, Finland Received 24 February 2009; accepted for publication 1 September 2009 We have inferred the most comprehensive phylogenetic hypothesis to date of butterflies in the tribe Satyrini. In order to obtain a hypothesis of relationships, we used maximum parsimony and model-based methods with 4435 bp of DNA sequences from mitochondrial and nuclear genes for 179 taxa (130 genera and eight out-groups). We estimated dates of origin and diversification for major clades, and performed a biogeographic analysis using a dispersal–vicariance framework, in order to infer a scenario of the biogeographical history of the group. We found long-branch taxa that affected the accuracy of all three methods. Moreover, different methods produced incongruent phylogenies. We found that Satyrini appeared around 42 Mya in either the Neotropical or the Eastern Palaearctic, Oriental, and/or Indo-Australian regions, and underwent a quick radiation between 32 and 24 Mya, during which time most of its component subtribes originated. Several factors might have been important for the diversification of Satyrini: the ability to feed on grasses; early habitat shift into open, non-forest habitats; and geographic bridges, which permitted dispersal over marine barriers, enabling the geographic expansions of ancestors to new environ- ments that provided opportunities for geographic differentiation, and diversification.
