Victoria Fomina Budapest, August 16, 2019 CEU eTD Collection i Abstract This dissertation explores commemorative practices in contemporary Russia and Cyprus focusing on the role heroic and martyrical images play in the recent surge of nationalist movements in Orthodox countries. It follows two cases of collective mobilization around martyr figures – the cult of the Russian soldier Evgenii Rodionov beheaded in Chechen captivity in 1996, and two Greek Cypriot protesters, Anastasios Isaak and Solomos Solomou, killed as a result of clashes between Greek and Turkish Cypriot protesters during a 1996 anti- occupation rally. Two decades after the tragic incidents, memorial events organized for Rodionov and Isaak and Solomou continue to attract thousands of people and only seem to grow in scale, turning their cults into a platform for the production and dissemination of competing visions of morality and social order. This dissertation shows how martyr figures are mobilized in Russia and Cyprus to articulate a conservative moral project built around nationalism, militarized patriotism, and Orthodox spirituality. -

It is an academic institution that forms part of the Faculty of Law of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. L'italia E L'eurovision Song Contest Un Rinnovato
La musica unisce l'Europa… e non solo C'è chi la definisce "La Champions League" della musica e in fondo non sbaglia. L'Eurovision è una grande festa, ma soprattutto è un concorso in cui i Paesi d'Europa si sfidano a colpi di note. Tecnicamente, è un concorso fra televisioni, visto che ad organizzarlo è l'EBU (European Broadcasting Union), l'ente che riunisce le tv pubbliche d'Europa e del bacino del Mediterraneo. Noi italiani l'abbiamo a lungo chiamato Eurofestival, i francesi sciovinisti lo chiamano Concours Eurovision de la Chanson, l'abbreviazione per tutti è Eurovision. Oggi più che mai una rassegna globale, che vede protagonisti nel 2016 43 paesi: 42 aderenti all'ente organizzatore più l'Australia, che dell'EBU è solo membro associato, essendo fuori dall'area (l’anno scorso fu invitata dall’EBU per festeggiare i 60 anni del concorso per via dei grandi ascolti che la rassegna fa in quel paese e che quest’anno è stata nuovamente invitata dall’organizzazione). L'ideatore della rassegna fu un italiano: Sergio Pugliese, nel 1956 direttore della RAI, che ispirandosi a Sanremo volle creare una rassegna musicale europea. La propose a Marcel Bezençon, il franco-svizzero allora direttore generale del neonato consorzio eurovisione, che mise il sigillo sull'idea: ecco così nascere un concorso di musica con lo scopo nobile di promuovere la collaborazione e l'amicizia tra i popoli europei, la ricostituzione di un continente dilaniato dalla guerra attraverso lo spettacolo e la tv. E oltre a questo, molto più prosaicamente, anche sperimentare una diretta in simultanea in più Paesi e promuovere il mezzo televisivo nel vecchio continente. -

PRINCIPLES OF MUSIC COMPOSING: The Phenomenon of Rhythm | XIII | muzikos komponavimo pRincipai: ritmo fenomenas Kalliopi Stiga Rhythm and Greekness in the Cities of Mikis Theodorakis Four notes and a rhythm, the syrtaki rhythm, were identified with Mikis Theodorakis and Greek music. Figure 1. Zorba's dance It is the melodic-rhythmic theme of Zorba’s dance, which was immortalized in the homonym film “Zorba the Greek” (1964) by the prominent Cypriot filmmaker Michael Cacoyannis. This dance is rooted in traditional Greek music. Namely, the syrtaki dance – a modern and cheerful dance inspired by Theodorakis – emerges from the combination of two Greek folk dances, the hasapiko dance1 and the hasaposerviko dance2. The use of traditional and popular Greek music rhythms is frequent in Theodorakis’ work. The composer was initiated into Greek traditional music during his childhood while he was acquainted with Greek popular music later on, in 1947 during his exile in Ikaria Island, where he heard for the first time the most famous rebetiko song “Captain Andreas Zepos” (Καπετάν Ανδρέα Ζέπο) by Yannis Papaioannou written in syrtos3 rhythm (2/4). Theodorakis was particularly sensitized early on to the concept of the rhythm. During his adolescence, in the early 1940s, he studied thoroughly and he is deeply influenced by the texts of an important Modern Greek poet Costis Palamas4 (1859–1943). He agreed with the poet’s belief that “the rhythm in poetry – the rhythmic walking – symbolizes the rhythm that governs the Universe” (Theodorakis, 1986, vol. 1: 140–141) and moreover, Theodorakis adds the concept of Harmony. “That is, the rhythmic Harmony, which one realizes through the motion of the stars when gazing into the celestial vault.” (Theodorakis, 1986, vol. -

Vinyl records, although widely accepted by audiophiles as the most satisfying way to hear recorded music, is for collectors and DJs only. CDs are still the storage medium being most widely manufactured and distributed, however, they are becoming more technologically passé on a daily basis. Downloading digital music off of the Internet in MP3 and other forms is the current youth rage, but kids seem to download scads of stuff on a whim, often times an artist’s entire oeuvre in one fell swoop, and then forget to listen to it. The MySpace phenomenon on the web has made any band’s music, I mean any band’s music, from Micronesian punk rock goofball stuff to selected arias from monumental Italian opera stars, available to download into your computer’s hard disk in seconds. As the age of global stadium stars has dwindled down to a mere handful of selected acts: Rolling Stones, Madonna, U2, AC/DC, Metallica etc, so too has the Greek music scene splintered into a few revered giants and hordes of mewling newbies. -
