Equisetopsida Horsetails date from the Devonian period (416 to 359 million years ago) in earth’s history where they were trees up to 110 feet in height and helped to form the coal deposits of the Carboniferous period. Only one genus has survived to modern times (Equisetum). Horsetails Horsetails (Equisetum) have jointed stems with whorls of thin narrow leaves. In the sporophyte stage, they have a sterile and fertile form. Th ey produce only one type of spore. While the gametophytes produced from the spores appear to be plentiful, the successful reproduction of the sporophyte form is low with most Horsetails reproducing vegetatively. Lycopodiopsida Lycopodiopsida includes the clubmosses (Dendrolycopodium, Diphasiastrum, Lycopodiella, Lycopodium , Spinulum) and Fir-mosses (Huperzia) Clubmosses Clubmosses are evergreen plants that produce only microspores that develop into a gametophyte capable of producing both sperm and egg cells. Club-mosses can produce the spores either in leaf axils or at the top of their stems. Th e spore capsules form in a cone-like structures (strobili) at the top of the plants.

    ABSTRACT CULATTA, KATHERINE EMILY. Taxonomy, Genetic Diversity, and Status Assessment of Nuphar sagittifolia (Nymphaeaceae). (Under the direction of Dr. Alexander Krings and Dr. Ross Whetten). Nuphar sagittifolia (Walter) Pursh (Nymphaeaceae), Cape Fear spatterdock, is an aquatic macrophyte considered endemic to the Atlantic Coastal Plain and of conservation concern in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The existence of populations of unclear taxonomic identity has precluded assessment of the number of populations, distribution, and conservation needs of N. sagittifolia. Thus, the first objective of this thesis was to re-assess the circumscription of the species by evaluating four taxonomic hypotheses: 1) Populations of Nuphar in the N. sagittifolia range, including morphological intermediates, are members of a single polymorphic species; 2) Morphological intermediates in the N. sagittifolia range are hybrids between N. advena subsp. advena and N. sagittifolia; 3) Morphological intermediates are variants of N. advena subsp. advena or N. sagittifolia; 4) Intermediates, distinct from both N. advena subsp. advena and N. sagittifolia, are either disjunct populations of N. advena subsp. ulvacea or members of an undescribed taxon. The second objective was to summarize information on the taxonomy, biology, distribution, and genetic diversity of N. sagittifolia s.s to inform conservation decisions. Approximately 30 individuals from each of 21 populations of Nuphar across the N. sagittifolia range, and the type populations of N. advena subsp. advena, N. advena subsp. ulvacea, and N. sagittifolia were included in genetic and morphological analyses. Individuals were genotyped across 26 SNP loci identified for this study, and 31 leaf, flower and fruit morphological characters were measured. It was identified with Arge nigrovaginata Malaise, 1931, described from the Russian Far East, for more than seven decades, but a recent examination of Malaise’s type material has revealed the misidentification. Previously unknown immature stages are described, new host plant records are given, and the distribution and life history are discussed based on the specimens examined and rearing experiments. The mostly greenish, solitary and cryptic larvae feed on the leaves of Potentilla and Sanguisorba (also Fra- garia and Duchesnea in the laboratory), all belonging to the clade Sanpotina of the Rosaceae.     A LIST OF THE GRASSES AND GRASSLIKE PLANTS OF THE OAK OPENINGS, LUCAS COUNTY, OHIO1 NATHAN WILLIAM EASTERLY Department of Biology, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio 4-3403 ABSTRACT This report is the second of a series of articles to be prepared as a second "Flora of the Oak Openings." The study represents a comprehensive survey of members of the Cyperaceae, Gramineae, Juncaceae, Sparganiaceae, and Xyridaceae in the Oak Openings region. Of the 202 species listed in this study, 34 species reported by Moseley in 1928 were not found during the present investigation. Fifty-seven species found by the present investi- gator were not observed or reported by Moseley. Many of these species or varieties are rare and do not represent a stable part of the flora. Changes in species present or in fre- quency of occurrence of species collected by both Moseley and Easterly may be explained mainly by the alteration of habitats as the Oak Openings region becomes increasingly urbanized or suburbanized. Some species have increased in frequency on the floodplain of Swan Creek, in wet ditches and on the banks of the Norfolk and Western Railroad right-of-way, along newly constructed roadsides, or on dry sandy sites. INTRODUCTION The grass family ranks third among the large plant families of the world. The family ranks number one as far as total numbers of plants that cover fields, mead- ows, or roadsides are concerned. No other family is used as extensively to pro- vide food or shelter or to create a beautiful landscape. The sedge family does not fare as well in terms of commercial importance, but the sedges do make avail- able forage and food for wild fowl and they do contribute plant cover in wet areas where other plants would not be as well adapted.
